10 iphone apps that can help with homework - 4 views

  •
This article is a great source for finding "virtual tutoring programs" to help students with their homework. I think it would be great for a teacher to check out all of these apps to evalutate which might be best to recommend to students. And with so many new apps being created all the time, this is certainly a topic to do continual research into.

The Khan Academy is a leading online education tool. Founder Salman Khan started the company after tutoring his niece who was struggling with middle school math. He has written a book called 'The One World Schoolhouse' about how the traditional classroom models no longer work and that using technology in the classroom can bridge the education gaps.

Students Tackle Video-Game Design - 2 views

  •
Students are allowed to take on the challenge of creating video games in school. The games are created around a subject of the students interest. Students are challenged by the programming, develop critical thinking skills, and gain determination as they rise to the challenge. Students also are forced to rely on each other as their skills surpass the instructors.

Interesting article, David. I love problem based learning. Video games definitely play into that design.

Mincraft in the Classroom - 4 views

This article explains how a teacher used the game Minecraft to help teach his first and second graders real world lessons. This "virtual lego" world will have students doing team work task that the teacher created before the class, in which they have to work together to solve puzzles. This is a great bridge between student and technology. Students are able to expand on their imagination and creativity to create such amazing worlds and do different tasks. This was a huge success for the teacher and showed an outstanding response.

Love it! :) I don't know if you know the Apple guys at the high school, but they were able to fix a "bug" with all the student computers before Apple even had a fix and they credited their solution to playing Minecraft! :)

This article addresses five myths about using technology in education.  The report was released at the 2010 ISTE conference.  It is a long article but you can always just read the five myths as a summary if you do not want to read the full report.  It has great links on the resource page at the end of the article (p32).

This article is about a 5th grade classroom School in Texas that uses cell phones. This project was initiated by the teacher and is supported by corporate sponsors. Verizon provides the service; HTC donates the cell phones; and Microsoft Mobile is helping with software issues. I think this teacher is on to something!
