UNB computer science numbers rebound from dot.com crisis - New Brunswick - CBC News - 0 views

    In the 2000's. enrollment in computer science at UNB was cut in half, creating a need for more graduates for computer science. There were "More job than graduates from computer science programs." Recruiters were sent out to try to convince more students to join into computer sciences, even as young as grade five, trying to explain the simplicity and importance of computer science. Since then, the efforts of the recruiters boosted the numbers up by 47%. This relates to the tag "careers" because it shows the sudden need for computer science graduates due to the large sum of jobs in computer sciences. There is a high need for this through the 2000's and is likely still in need today. Though this "crisis" was averted, is there still a possibility that this may happen again, and is anyone prepared? In my opinion, if it does happen again we should be ready for this problem, since it will send out more possibilities for jobs.

    This article talks about how girls aren't pursuing computer science careers as much as boys and why this is happening. Girls are very skilled in computer science much like boys, but misunderstanding prevents them from pursuing a career in computer science. Girls and Boys equally like computer science in elementary school and both do very good in it. When girls do bad in computer science, it is because people tell them boys are better at it. Since 1985 to now, the amount of women pursuing a computer science major in college or university has dropped drastically. We can change this by showing female role models, introducing them to computers early, encouraging them, and getting rid of the stereotypes about women.

    Studies are showing that a very small amount woman have or are working towards jobs in the field of computer science. A lot of time and effort is put into seeing how to get girls and woman interested into practises like computer science. Recent work shows that girls must be exposed to these subjects at a young age. A survey of over 600 girls in the Maritime Provinces reviled that girls who had participated in events consisting of science, engineering, or computers were almost 3 times more likely to choose a path in one of those studies. I believe that for girls there should be a larger focus on the sciences and technology so they would have a larger amount of careers to think about.

    This article talks about a new development in computing technology. So far we have relied on the basic computer who's most basic functions are base on binary logic in the in state of "on" and "off". This new development is referred to as "quantum computing". In quantum computing instead of using "on" and "off" states ; qubits are used. Qubits are a form of matter/energy which is part of quantum physics. The trick here is that qubits can represent multiple states at once and therefore far less of them are needed, and many new types of problems can be solved. There is a drawback however, and it is that qubits can only stay in their form for a set period of time, and they must also be at a temperature of 0 degrees Celsius or lower. Overall quantum computing is a great idea as it allows for things such as modeling atoms, and seeing how they will react. It will be a huge breakthrough in science, and will allow the modeling and creation of new atoms, chemical reactions, and even living beings, but it is not something you will be using day to day, such as your computer. To conclude, I think that this is an amazing development but i believe that it is more science centered rather than day-to-day life.

    For many years scientists have been banging their heads on the wall that is Cancer. No cure seems to be found that is perfect, but they keep striving on. In this article Scientists are starting to develop a new approach. Scientists have developed a technology that allows them to manipulate nano-particles and are using them to fight cancer. These particles are ejected into the cells along with protein and then travel into their system. They then latch on to three separate "nodes" and attach them together. This in fact is the cells death switch causing it to self district Furthermore, this has proven successful in destroying many cells, but there are still problems. First of all, there is so far no way of controlling which cells are targeted, so this is not very safe for you, and some cancer cells are making attempts to resist this. To conclude, I believe that this is an ingenious piece of technology and with some further development we may see a cure for cancer.

    This article details a video released by Michael Bloomberg's (the Mayor of New York) office: the video compiles some data from a study on how to reduce New York's CO2 emissions by "The mayor's Office of Long Term Planning and Sustainability." Those science nerds calculated that one tonne of CO2 would equate to a sphere with a 33-foot diameter, and knowing that New York as a city produces almost 2 tonnes of CO2 every second, the virtual simulation shows that over the course of one year, New York would produce more than 54 million metric tonnes of CO2; by those pre-determined facts, we would see that the entire island of Manhattan would be buried under a pile of those 33-foot diameter spheres. This relates to 'Environment' because as we progress in technology, our emissions of fossil fuel bi-products (especially CO2) increase rapidly. This relates to ICS20 because we often argue about the tech industry's impact on the environment, the most recent of debates being 'Cloud Computing' (which we all agree has a less minimal impact than a multitude of servers.)     In science it is known that Graphene was the lightest material known to man but now graphene aerogel is the lightest material in the world. Aerogel is nothing new. China's zhejiang University made some aerographene and has a density of 0.16 mg/cm3 compared to the previous lightest material aerographite with a density of 0.818 mg/cm3 . Building chunks of an almost weightless material involves high-tech freeze drying. Aerographene is extremely resilient and can mop up 900 times its weight in oil making it potentially indispensable as a clean-up sponge.

    This article is about new apps that help disabled people. Many computer science researchers have been looking for an app that would help the disabled, and now they have created a few. One is called VizWiz. This is an app that helps the visually impaired. The user takes a picture of what he/she has a question about, asks a question, and receives an answer by a worker at Mechanical Turk. Mechanical Turk is a service, featuring many people that answer questions. Another app is Scribe. This app helps the deaf and hearing-impaired. Users send an audio stream to many of the Scribe workers who provide real time transcription. Since only highly trained transcribers with special equipment can transcribe all of the words in a live stream, Scribe coordinates a group of six or seven amateurs to transcribe the stream.

China's first module has been launched and completion of the heavenly palace is expected in 2020 with a manned moon mission sometime after.

    Many of our teachers tell us clearly when we have a project or an assignment that involves research, we should try to avoid Wikipedia as a source. I think it's because of the fact that Wikipedia makes it easy to find information and that most of the information is starting to be more accurate instead of being fake information. In my opinion, most information that's on Wikipedia is almost no difference from the information found in textbooks. This article explains that Wikipedia should be used if the assignment is to find information and summarize it to something simple because Wikipedia simply shows you a summary that can be referenced in classes. This is related to being legal because mainly, copying information from something site like Wikipedia would be plagiarism. Although in my opinion using Wikipedia as a way to gather any information and constrict it into a small summary of that information, then it should be used.

    This article is about the advancement of 3D printers recently. A 3D printer is a device that creates 3 dimensional objects from digital models. A 3D printer accomplishes this by spraying on layers of plastics or metals to eventually create an object. This article focuses mostly on new software which pinpoints weak spots in a 3D print digital model and adds thickness or struts where needed. There is also an option to reduce the thickness in some areas where it is already structurally sound enough, reducing the amount of material needed, weight and cost. 3D printers have become so advanced recently that an average person can go and pick one up for as little as $300. The future of 3D printing looks amazing and as time goes on, these devices will become more and more advanced.  I chose the tag of eLifestyle because 3D printers are quickly becoming a household device that many can afford. Advances in printer technology are making it possible to find a model online and then print it out right in the comfort of your own home, instead of going out and buying it. I really like the idea of 3D printing, it feels so futuristic in that we can print our own things on a whim. I think 3D printers could also be quite dangerous as anyone who has access to one of these devices could print out weapons such as knives and firearms. It seems as authorities would have trouble controlling this and could pose a major problem in the near future. Overall 3D printing has both its ups and downs.

I find this fantasic the treatment not only leaves out the harmful radiation but it is also just as effective if not more. Another plus is it is also about the same price. I find that for the people being scanned i would find it a great comfort to me that i don't increase my chances of getting cancer because i was scanned for cancer. So it appears the MRI appoarch is on the rise.

Think again. hundreds of third party applications may have gained access to your Facebook account, some of them are ones you never knew you installed.. This is what Leslie Canteris was shocked about when Sisler high school in Winnipeg had an exercise about online privacy. These third party apps can take anything from your Facebook account. Many Canadian students don't understand how to protect their privacy. They don't want to be tracked, but have no clue to avoid it. in fact, kids spend more time changing their privacy settings on their social networks more than adults. People should not use their real names when playing online games, and come up with tough passwords that are hard for outsiders to crack. I applaud Sisler high school for teaching their students about social media privacy. I think that more high schools should talk to its students about this issue since social media is a huge part of many peoples daily lives.

This app is great because it allows you to witness stuff in space that you really never would had this app not been invented.
