      The difference between NLEs and PLEs (Personal Learning Environments), OLEs (Online Learning Environments), ONLEs (Open Network Learning Environments), and OLNs (Online or Open Learning Networks).  NLEs, ONLEs, and OLN are much the same. While PLEs and OLEs may be a different concept. Online Learning Environments, for most of us formal learners has been based around course management system (CMS or LMS). These systems have been secure and only available during semester months for communication, publication, and collaboration and where only students and faculty assigned to the course had access to. It was a recreation of the traditional face-to-face class that we were all so familiar with growing up instead of a collaborative learning environment that Web 2.0 has allowed for us to participate in. One solution to the problems of CMSs was the personal learning environment (PLE). PLE helps to manage information, create content, and connect with others. An example of PLE is iGoogle. The NLE would be a bridge or connection between the two mediums: CMSs and PLEs.

      I integrated discussion via a wiki, sharing content through creating a web and sharing content and tagging utilizing Dippity. This was my main struggle in this assignment because not all of the strategies you had listed are appropriate for my grade level. Not only that but I tried to be realistic on what they could do in our district. While NAU might be forward thinking enough to utilize and have access to multiple web tools most districts do not.

      The way I would know if my strategies were effective were the connections that they students made. The discussion content would be interactive. Basically the reason for utilizing an ONLE is for the students to gain higher order learning skills. Therefore even though we aren't looking at assessing content if they students are taking the content to places where they couldn't of on their own then you know that they have achieved the goals that an online network learning can provide.

Feedback Comments: This unit is geared towards 2nd grade learners. The wiki is very well designed but could be set up to be more kid friendly. Allow the website to guide the students so that there is not as much training that needs to be done by you. ONLE Instructional Strategies: Integrate Constructivism instructional strategies and activities or other relevant strategies and activities to support the unit. ONLE Instructional Strategies Areas: Integrate multiple ONLE instructional strategies in additional to constructivist instructional strategies. Focus on "network" instructional strategies, not just "online (distributed)" instructional technologies. Feedback Comments: It is obvious that you are using ONLE Strategies in your lessons I was not able to see them outlined in your sections about which ones you were using per section. This might be useful to put in to help teachers who might be searching for ideas for those strategies. ONLE Technologies: Web 2.0 tools, social media, and/or network media. Areas: All ONLE technologies integrate effectively & appropriately? Focus on "network" technologies, not just "online" technologies. Feedback Comments: The use of dippity, online books and webspireation are all very inventive tools for the students use. It might be easier for the students of this age to create their web in kidspiration and then upload to webspiration since this is a more kid friendly program. Evaluations: Evaluate the goals and objectives of at least one lesson. Perform a pilot test on one lesson by asking a targeted audience of three and/or your classmates. Area to evaluate: Evaluation methods (Projects, Reflections, Peer evaluations, Collaborative evaluations, Presentations…etc.) Evaluation instruments (Rubrics, criteria, checklist, survey…etc.) All

      I feel that this unit integrates principles of ONLE in that it incorporates the idea of networking with other users. First it allows users to gain an understanding of different learning environments and then lets them become participants in them. Using Google reader, delicious, and setting up a PLE in which these can be managed demonstrate this concept.

      ONLE strategies were utilized in the following ways: 1 - Delicious (Community-Community interaction, social sharing, linkage) - users researched and tagged sources about what ONLE is and how to use them within their own teaching. Utilizing the "wetfeet" tag would allow for knowledge to be passed along and shared over time. 2 - iGoogle - build an igoogle PLE which incorporates google reader 3 - Worldle - information visualization and UGC to assist in understanding of PLE/ONLE. 4 - Google Doc - UGC, participatory in building of knowledge about wikis. 5 - Wetpaint - UGC, participatory, community-community as these sites are built and implemented users can continue to add ONLE ideas with some tools they have become familiar with here.

      Assessment in PD offerings with colleagues is always tricky in my opinion. You want to see if they have understood and grasped the ideas, yet don't want the assessment to be something that would discourage participation. I built a very simple rubric that could be used to check off if tasks have been completed and also put a survey together. The survey results would be much more valuable in determining if this unit was successful. Ultimately the measure of success will be to see the participation of my colleagues in an ONLE over a period of time.

      Learning occurs in many different ways. I felt that when students post and learn from each other through discussion board, they can discuss and create different kinds of idea interacting through the discussion board. Interacting and creating a timeline togther helps them plan and come up with deadline dates as well.

      Community Community: Students will read and decided what kind of recycle participation is important. Students will post this on the igoogle discussion board in their own group. They also have to decided within their group what leaders they want and what exactly each position will do.. UGC: Students are creating their own definitions of what is important and what we need to change at school to save the earth. Participatory Web: Students are creating a presentation at the end and also using a blog to reflect on ideas.

Also blog reflections, Dipity timeline, the igoogle document needed to show that they wrote a letter to the city, and last, the presentation at the end that is due.

      My unit goes beyond being a DL activity and meets the standard of being an ONLE because of the incorporation of various PLE and ONLE instructional strategies. Upon completion of this unit participants will have developed and used a PLE as a hub for all lesson activities. Through this unit participants will have experienced an ONLE primarily through the following instructional stratagies: Linkage Design: Students create linkage to their PLE through Twitter and Diigo in modules 2 and 3. Participatory Web: Participants engage in collaboratively working on developing a Wiki in module 3. Social Tagging: Diigo and Delicious Bookmarking are introduced in module 2 and are again employed in module 3.       The social tagging architecture employed in this unit is a fairly simple one but one I believe can evolve somewhat throughout the course of implementing the unit. The concept of a social tagging architecture is introduced in Module 1. In this module participants are introduced to the one required tag in the unit and that tag is "PCCHRP." This tag is again used in module 2 with Twitter, Diigo and Delicious where there are links and widgets for participants to test their use of the PCCHRP tag. Lastly a common tagging architecture is required as a component in units that are to be created in module 3.

      Throughout the process of developing this unit I have struggled with how the assessment piece would work. The reason for this is the group for whom I developed the unit. As the unit has been developed for peer instructors whom I have worked with for year and hope to work with for many more years, I am a bit hesitant to employ tools such as rubrics or peer evaluations, though I do acknowledge the importance of both giving and getting feedback. To this end I have kept most of my assessment of performance on more of one of acknowledging and discussing participation as opposed to a more quantifiable approach such as rubrics. I do employ a survey of participants at the end of the unit. I would look at the units produced through the unit and comment offered in the survey to refine the unit.

      This unit is ONLE because it is in Wiki format and is available to the student after the course is finished. The ONLE is a learning environment that is not controlled within a content managed system. It offers more flexibility with content management by the student as well as the instructor. The student has more control of his/her learning. The student has the ability to create and edit their content in collaboration with their peers. The teacher puts in the assignments and criteria and the student has the expectations of meeting the criteria. In this unit the student's have the assignment of creating content pages in the wiki page and letting their partners know via twitter. The big assignment is the PLE at the end of the unit which is created in iGoogle another potential ONLE.

      I determined the social tagging architecture by course, year, semester, lesson and content. By putting the year and semester, it helps keep each semester/year categorized. When the students reference content they can use the tags to determine when it was created. The design should take into consideration of how the information is being used and referenced or transmitted.       I will know my strategies are effective by the quality of the content the students create and the integration and competence with the use of the Web2.0 tools and the PLE tools introduced. I have rubrics that are comprehensive and cover the all the key components of the assignments including integration and competence of using the technology. I also have a final course evaluation required to be completed that specifically asks how well the students perceive their ability of using the technology introduced in this course. The students are required to use Twitter and Delicious bookmarking throughout this course, by monitoring their posts and tagging, I will be able to determine with the rubric the level of comprehension the student is displaying. If I see there is a definite lack or no response, then I will council that student and mentor and help with integration.

      My unit is ONLE, different from DL or OLE, because it isn't just online but incorporates ONLE instructional strategies. One example is User Generated Content, where the learners are creating the content that others will have to read. The main difference is the social network environment where learners can interact with each other and get a sense of peers because of profiles, pictures, etc. This network created by the wiki will not just disappear when the course is over, as it isn't a CMS that just goes away. Learners can remain in contact and in the same network forever.

      Social Networking was used because it is done on a Wiki where students create profiles and can stay "friends" and network past the duration of the course. Students also network using Delicious. This brings us into Social tagging. Students use a common tag for the class ("bchsgeo") in both the wiki and Delicious. Students used participatory web by publishing to the web their chapter content and to delicious and google docs to collaborate on their content. UGC was used because the content published on the wiki is an assigned reading to all other students. They must comment to each page. Community-Community interaction is created because students stay in the same network and community within the wiki, google docs, and delicious.

      I will know the ONLE instructional strategies are effective because students will be using tagging and networking effectively. Students will be collaborating and communicating effectively within the course wiki and even outside in other areas of interest. Students will be asking meaningful questions and continually adding to their work as they learn new things. It will become a community that lasts longer than one semester or year, but through their whole learning career, which is hopefully a lifetime.

    I liked how you used quite a bit of web 2.0 tools to foster networking. Each lesson required the participants to extend themselves and communicate with other learners. You had several resources I have never seen before. I got lost and loved it. I liked how you broke down the assignments and other expectations down into steps. I appreciate that as a learner.

      In the Online Learning Environment, learning is an individual process where the instructor guides the course and students share content only with the instructor. When you add the "N" ONLE opens the door, collaboration develops and students actively participate in developing content and guiding the learning. When the semester is over, students are able to continue the connection with others as well as the creating of content. The ONLE allows continual collaboration in Google Docs, Twitter, and blogs and access to the tools for networking can be designed in ones' PLE where one has complete control for life-long learning. Distributed learning communities take shape by how they self-organize, and how they support learning, distinguishing the construct from traditional groups of learners found in many f2f classrooms. The connectivism in my unit develops an awareness of the capacity of social networking, and the tools that can empower participants to go and find the knowledge. One makes knowledge personal by construction of a personal learning environment and that knowledge is the connection. They build on the connectivism theory as they develop future lessons for others to learn.

      A Wiki is developed to integrate discussion and share content. User-Generated Content is established as groups collaborate and develop their course Wiki by adding content. Learners are engaged in contributing online content in their group area and create web pages (PAR). Participants apply technology tools for their learning and connect with resources on their PLE with RSS. Community -community interaction develops each semester as classes are able to learn from wiki content development and add to it. Connectivism principles are integrated in each lesson as a guideline and the learner-centered approach enables students to use creativity by designing and implementing lesson content which involves challenge and higher-order thinking.

      I will know the integrated ONLE instructional strategies are effective in my unit by observation as participants' control contribution and content development in their group wiki sections. Their PLEs will use RSS feeds to manage information and they use unique tags to share distributed learning resources on Delicious; the Social Tagging is integrated in their wikis as well for resource sharing. Threaded discussions are used to ensure understanding of assignments. Self-assessments in the form of weekly blog postings are used to determine if learning outcomes are being met. Peer evaluations are integrated within groups and the class as whole and weekly assignments will be given immediate feedback to determine if the student understands. Rubrics are used as well as a survey for feedback.

      This unit is ONLE due to instructional strategies used to take the unit beyond just DL or OLE. The instructional strategies incorporated are User Generated Content, RSS, Cloud Computing, blogging, and folksonomy. Students create content to be shared with their network of fellow learners. Students then respond to content. Students use their RSS to find articles that are relevant to the topic we are studying, summarize the article, and then post this summary to the class blog in which they have to comment. Nearly all of the content is generated by students and not just distributed by the instructor to the students. Finally, the students have to newtork with each not just get information from a DL or OLE.

      Social Network-The students were required to join Twitter and follow the class feed as well as the feeds of each student in the class. In addition to following Twitter, students are required to join the class Facebook page. The students will also join the class Delicious Group and follow the class Blog. Social Tagging-Students will use Delicious to tag news articles and informational websites. Students will also use tags for blog posts to the class blog. Participatory Web-Students are required to comment on current event summaries. UGC-As part of the unit students will generate content in two of the lessons. In Lesson 2, students will research an element and post the information to the class wiki. In Lesson 3, students will research a physics concept with their group and post this information to the class wiki. Community-Community Ineraction-Students can continue to follow the class and classmate on Twitter, Facebook, and Delicious.       The only way to really assess the effectiveness of my strategies is summative, through student interaction and feedback. I plan to use the group discussions, blogs and Diigo comments to monitor progress, as well as F2F conversations and a survey at the end of the course. This course is also part of a multi-course scaffolding of creating self-directed and community learners (not learner-instructor focused) who are able to succeed online and in creating their own PLE.     The course cannot just jump in and become an ONLE or integrate a PLE because the students don't have the technological skills. The first few lessons work on developing the skills that they need, and begin the networking process through creating flashcards, first for themselves, then with an team mate, and then with a group. The flashcards then become the content for future courses. The student discussions are implemented in the third lesson which focuses on Cultural Diversity, a topic that my culturally diverse students can relate to and would be more willing to share experiences with one another. The intent here is to help create a Learning Community of students with similar abilities, similar experiences who will begin to work more with one another and rely less on the instructor. (learner-learner construction of knowledge is very important for Andragogical teaching).

I feel this assessment was good for the content because it is applying the content learned in a real setting. The are connecting information sources by researching the computer requirements information from several online suppliers. The information learners are seeking is residing in the computer (appliance). They are formatting that information into a spreadsheet (visual model) and they can update/modify their choice after discussing the options with their classmates in the class blog.        One of the classes I teach is Journalism.  This is as class that can only benefit from collaboration.  Using an ONLE for this would be helpful for many reasons, not the least of which is conserving resources (paper, toner, etc.).  By using a wiki, the students can easily contribute to each other's work.  Normally in a writing class, students would create something on paper and interact only with the instructor.  Using ONLE, students can interact and learn from each other.  The unit I am proposing is the first unit students will complete in the class.

      I think you can really tell if your strategy is effective by how well the class proceeds.  If the students are constantly lost and haven't been using the tools provided appropriately, then your strategy does not work.  For my particular lesson, I would know that it was effective if the students take part in discussions and successfully complete their assignments.  The bottom line of any strategy should be to facilitate the learning of the content.  So, it stands to reason that if they get the content and complete the project, the strategy has worked.
