The NDIIP (National Digital Information Infrastructure and Preservation) twitter account tweeted a link to a video featuring Kari Kraus giving a speech titled "Phylogenetic Futures: Big Data and Design Fiction" at Big Data & Uncertainty in the Humanities hosted at the University of Kansas. Kraus spoke about the application of digital humanities to phylogenetics, or the study of evolutionary relatedness between various groups of organisms. She presents phylogenetics as a part of the big data segment of digital humanities. Her speech details the applications of phylogenetics in digital humanities through examining cultural materials.

This link links to Duke University Professor Mark Anthony Neal's live webcast show website where he discusses black studies in relationship to the digital humanities along with other experts in the field. The live show encourages interaction by use of the twitter hashtag #leftofblack to contribute to the conversations going on throughout the webcast.

Mark Sample writes about the inaugural issue of the Journal of Digital Humanities, topics ranging from arguments about humanists interpretations of quantitative data to a review of WordSeer. The journal's aim is to catch the good-or finding substantive and valuable digital humanities work "in whatever format, and wherever, it exists." This includes podcasts, blog posts, twitter conversations, slideshows, and any other relevant work, layered with evaluation from the authors.

This article focuses on collaborative teaching in a classroom and uses Twitter to have a discussion. Usually teaching is done by one person which henders the collaborative work of the teachers and discourages collaborative between students. This article asks questions to how to collaborate in a classroom.

In a 21st Century Media class an instructor conducted an experiment that allowed the students and professor to live tweet their class session, which she deemed a success. The students had an assigned reading that they were to find a method and be able to prepare it to the class. She informed them what a meaningful tweet would be that would be able to add to the online discussion. The purpose of this assignment was to show how twitter can be used academically. Students in the class were able to multitask by discussing online with each other and also in the classroom setting.

This blog post by Dan Cohen discusses the collection of digital ephemera, such as twitter posts, and its legitimate relevance to historical analysis. Cohen leans towards supporting the Library of Congress in their decision to take historical artifacts like this seriously, citing examples of thankful historians rejoicing over the preservation of what was thought to be scrap paper. He then goes on to discuss the problem in terms of costs, noting the relatively cheep nature of the digital texts.

This article contains information on Mark Anthony Neal's 3rd season of Left of Black, which premiered on September 17th, 2012. Within the article, the author discusses the importance of connection Black Studies with the Digital Humanities movement because the two cannot be separated from each other in this digital age. Much of the focus is on the use of twitter and Blackness within this social media site.

I like the definition that Maxwell proposes here. I agree that this is a new "fresh" field and that it is gaining momentum. I think it is fascinating that the field is primarily present in Twitter and think that this social media site is something that can significantly aid digital humanists in their work. Sharing ideas and collaboration is clearly a new way of learning and in my opinion is the most effective way of learning. Creating easy access to information destroys any walls that may keep an individual from pursuing their research of a subject. When any information known is available online, nothing stands in the way of people constantly adding their ideas and input to that data. We all have a different approach to life and different thought processes, and therefore it is very important for us to share information widely and freely and to work in collaboration with one another.
