This article focuses on the limitations of the traditional method of studying literature. David Smith, assistant professor of computational social science in the College of Computer and Information Science, and Ryan Cordell, assistant professor of English and digital humanities in the College of Social Sciences and Humanities at Northeastern University hope to mend the gaps and limitations to the traditional method by encouaging a digitial humanities project for their school.

Cohen blogs about the emergence of several new ways of publishing within the scientific field that is still considered scholarly and many times peer reviewed. Some of the websites mentioned offer to publish a writer's work for a lifetime, for a few dollars. The emergence of these self-publishing, academic, scientific sites also shows a slight shift in philosophy. By restricting the publication through certain channels, the publishing companies and universities were choosing what will be the topic "of next year." Some times they were right, sometimes they were wrong, but either way, great and important papers were lost because they were not considered "the next big thing" or they are too "normal."

This allows for others to peer-review their work and allows for their work to be used as a research tool. The works are organized and easily abled to be searched.

WILEY Open Access is an online database used to archive journals. This open access library offers peer reviewed journals that easy to use for researchers. Authors are allowed to published these journals to this site and reviewed by an editorial board that determines if the work will be an asset to this open access library. There are journals on various topics but after searching the site, I have noticed that the most popular journals are the ones that concern science and medicine.

PLOS is a nonprofit publisher that publishes only 7 journals in topics related to science or medicine. Every article that is published is open access and is freely able to be viewed online. The publishers of this website believe that their journals allows for ease of research and is determined to accelerate the advancement of knowledge in these fields.

This news article highlights the College of Arts and Sciences at Indiana University Bloomington's new initiative for facilitating research and education in the digital humanities. The initiative revolves around The Catapult Center, directed by William R. Newman, Distinguished Professor and Ruth N. Halls Professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Science. This center, according to the article, "will bring together a network of scholars from IU and the outside world in the rapidly expanding fields of digital editing, computational analysis of texts and material analysis of textual collections."

PeerJ is an open access journal that researchers in Biological and Medical Sciences publish their works for a one time membership fee, which covers their lifetime. The PeerJ, Inc. has two different publication venues: PeerJ is a peer reviewed journal and PeerJ Preprint is where they can post their unfinished works for feedback.

arXiv is another open access collection/publication (?) maintained by Cornell University. The publications are based primarily in any field of science and mathematics (such as work on K-Theory and quantitative biology). It does not state if the articles are peer reviewed, but it does say that "Submissions...must conform of Cornell University academic standards." I don't know if this means that all of the work in the collection is by students and teachers, or if the were able to scan in articles from the library.

The Sloan Foundation focuses its grants in science, technology, and economic institutions that they believe will improve American quality of life. Many of the open-access journals and projects that the Sloan foundation provides grants for fall under the initiatives for Information Technology and the Dissemination of Knowledge. Internet allows these scientists to take advantage of the system, so to speak.
