Are Super PACs Good or Bad for Democracy? - 0 views

  •
"Super PACs arose after the 2010 Supreme Court decisions in Citizens United vs. Federal Election Committee, which said that corporations could donate to political candidates because of free speech, and Speechnow.org vs. Federal Election Committee, which states that individuals cannot be limited in how much they donate to corporations because of free speech. Many were not pleased with this decision because it has paved the way for billionaires like Adelson and George Soros to funnel as much money as they please into campaigns both publicly and anonymously."

Issue: Personal Freedom | Greg Merle for United States Congress - 1 views

  •
This author has an argument against our Government on how there shouldn't be so many laws.
  •
Greg Merle does a wonderful job of pointing out the facts that lead to the question are we really free? He lists a few restrictions the government puts on the American people.
  •
"What is it that big government doesn't get about the "pursuit of happiness". We have to be free to make mistakes. We don't need laws designed to protect me from me, such as seat belt laws, trans fat laws, helmet laws, shower head water flow laws, etc. Did you know that there is actually a black market on certain toilets because the government wants to control how much you flush?  From a logical stand point, it's ridiculous."

Panhandling Law Violates Free Speech - 0 views

  •
I'm just amazed that they use any excuse to try and remove the "unwanted" from view instead of looking for a way to help them.
  •
I recently saw a news special on Panhandling and all their nasty tricks and to me the most shocking thing was that some/most of them aren't even homeless they consider this a "job". However, the worst part is some of them much more than the average fast food workers. So yes I completely agree with the article that panhandling should be illegal!

8 Preventive Health Services that Women Get free - 2 views

  •
This article summarizes eight services that are now available to women without any copay or cost sharing under the Affordable Care Act
  •
While it seems like a great thing to offer, how does this affect the taxpayers? Where does the government get the money to cover the extra cost of the "free" services? Higher taxes? We are already approaching 17 trillion in debt and running a trillion deficit every year since 2009.

Voices on Human Gene Patents: It's Time to Free Our Genes - 1 views

  •
this article is about how myriad genetics has a patent on our DNA. I always thought that my body was my own, including the very thing that makes me the unique individual that I am today. This article is arguing that there should not be a patent put on our DNA because of the cost and the ability to get second opinions on what could be life saving. If we can't even have the personal freedom to say what is ours on our own body, than what is personal freedom anyway? This is a really interesting topic!

In an attempt to preserve all that they believe is great about a free and just America, Arizona has opened US culture to two words that previously were the exclusive province of Nazi Germany and the communist bloc: "Papers, please."
  •
This is crazy its about how the copscan arrest you on the spot if you can't prove your citizenship status. Further more it states that if you buy a gun made in Arizona you don't have to register it.
  •
The weapon of choose becomes their Constitution right to bear arms. Perhaps that prospect will make police a little more concerned about who they round up on the streets. We doubt it. Weapon's instructors in Arizona feel cheated by the state's law makers as they are killing their business.
  •
It is wrong to be stopped by patrol just because you don't seem to look like you're from the US. As for the weapons not having to be licensed also defeats the purpose. I think anyone who owns a concealed weapon should be trained on how to use it, and with that you have to own a license.
  •
I defiantly disagree with both of these laws. I don't think it is right that a cop can pull someone over just to make sure they are legal. I also think in order to be allowed to handle a gun people should go through safety classes.
  •
I think there should be a little more added to both these laws. If you want to search someone regardless of race, gender, religion or whatever you should need probable cause. Also I think if you are going to handle any type of weapon you should have some background with weapons handling; maybe off free weapons safety classes at public ranges?

We are living in a digital age where students, myself included, can post, tweet, and update their status about every thought that goes through their heads. Some of those thoughts posted online has landed some kids in hot water. The severities of th incidents vary anywhere from venting about a hall monitor being mean or how a profile that was made as a joke that cost a teacher his job.

How SOPA/PIPA Can Affect You - 0 views

  •
The United States government has been facing an intense amount of pressure, mostly from the entertainment and computer software publishing companies for years to find some method of stopping the online piracy that is allowing people to own copies of their merchandise for free.
  •
PIPA is short for Protect IP Act and SOPA is short for Stop Online Piracy Act. They are both really big issues facing our world today. Many people are taking things illegally such as music, movies, software, and et cetera without paying for it. And now the government as well as the people who made all those things are fed up. For years people have tried to stop the hackers and now they are trying again. Will it work? Who knows.

Revealed: US spy operation that manipulates social media | Technology | The Guardian - 0 views

  •
The US military is developing software that will let it secretly manipulate social media sites by using fake online personas to influence internet conversations and spread pro-American propaganda. A Californian corporation has been awarded a contract with United States Central Command (Centcom), which oversees US armed operations in the Middle East and Central Asia, to develop what is described as an "online persona management service" that will allow one US serviceman or woman to control up to 10 separate identities based all over the world. The project has been likened by web experts to China's attempts to control and restrict free speech on the internet. Critics are likely to complain that it will allow the US military to create a false consensus in online conversations, crowd out unwelcome opinions and smother commentaries or reports that do not correspond with its own objectives
