    Under equal protection, same sex couples should have the freedom and support to marry their loved ones. Religious faiths that are opposed to the idea are free to not support the couples. Under DOMA each state was given the right to define marriage.

    Provisions of DOMA were recently struck down which gave same sex couples equal protection under federal laws. A recent development that's getting little attention is churches are changing their bylaws to protect themselves from lawsuits by the LGBT community. The bylaws are taking up where DOMA was struck down, declaring the church only recognizes marriages between a man and a woman.

    Gay couples, not allowed to marry, cannot receive the same privileges that married couples receive, no matter how long they have "been together." Some rights include not being able to visit a spouse in prison, the rights to collect survivor's benefits as the spouse of a military veteran. Gay couples, in these instances are not receiving the same rights as straight couples.

Why then should gay couples be seen as different under the eyes of the law?

These days marriages that last are rare. If a same sex couple love each other and are happy together, I think they should be able to be married.     When I read "The nine justices are considering challenges to state and federal laws defining marriage as the union of one man and one woman. The two cases before it provide an important opportunity for Americans to reflect on three questions: What is marriage? Why does it matter for public policy? And what are the consequences of redefining marriage?" it blew my mind a little, because it is challenging every American to think about marriage.     There is obviously more benefits for gay couples to be legally married. I think everyone should be happy and that there should be no law to say otherwise. If gay couples are allowed to get married not nly does it help them but also for the people around them.
