The Energy Independence and Security Act of 2007, signed into law on
December 19th, boosts the requirements for renewable fuel use to
36 billion gallons by 2022. The act requires "advanced
biofuels"—defined as fuels that cut greenhouse gas emissions by at least 50%—to
provide 21 billion gallons of fuel by 2022, or about 60% of the
total requirement. Such advanced biofuels could include ethanol
derived from cellulosic biomass—such as wood waste, grasses, and
agricultural wastes—as well as biodiesel, butanol, and other fuels.
Previously, a national Renewable Fuels Standard (RFS) set by the
Energy Policy Act of 2005 required 4.7 billion gallons of renewable
fuels in 2007, which would have increased to 5.4 billion gallons in
2008 and to 7.5 billion gallons by 2012.

Charles Bremner, Times, UK offers up some great news for air travelers. The dream of inexpensive, ecofriendly aviation has come closer to reality after a French test pilot achieved the first flight in a conventional light aircraft powered by an electric motor. The Electra, a wood-and-fabric single-seater, flew for 48 minutes for 50km (30 miles) around the southern Alps, winning a global race to apply battery power to a fixed-wing standard aircraft….Electric power for larger aircraft, including airliners, is also on the horizon, with research by Nasa and Boeing into the holy grail of the field: hydrogen-fed fuel cells. These will drive electric motors with power like those on French high-speed trains.

The Barcode nightclub was built in a disused brick Victorian railway arch in Vauxhall, south London. The entire nightclub is illuminated using only LED lights, and the sound system is also energy efficient. The architect, Woods Bagot claims that the system consumes “less electricity than the power used to boil a kettle”. If they could just give a watts per hour figure I’d be happier! Still, this is a interesting example of all-LED lighting in a building, which I’m sure we’ll see more in the coming years. Because the LEDs give off very little heat, much less AC is required to cool the building in summer. See more pictures over the fold.
