GM-VOLT : Chevy Volt Concept Site » Lockheed Martin Signs Agreement with EEStor - 0 views

  • We have previously discussed a secretive Texas company called EEStor, who are reported to be working on a new type of ultracapacitor that can hold 10x the energy in 1/10th the weight of typical batteries, at a fraction of the cost. They have an agreement to produce caps for Zenn electric cars but to date have not shown any prototypes. This has led some to suspect EEStor as not having the technology they report. Today, however, Lockheed Martin, the major U.S. military equipment manufacturer has announced a partnership agreement with EEStor to develop energy applications.

Bob Lutz Drives the Volt, Calls It 'Electrifying' | Autopia from Wired.com - 0 views

  • GM's engineers have been flogging the mules -- known formally as "engineering development vehicles" -- pretty hard for a couple of months now and they've got the lithium-ion batteries and electric drivetrain pretty much sorted. Lutz finally got a chance to take one of the range-extended electric vehicles for a spin and notes on his blog, "While the car is still most definitely a work in progress, the thrill of driving electrically -- that instant, silent torque -- is certainly present and accounted for."

On Board Energy Storage - Reason Automobile Engineers Chose (Choose) Fossil Fuel : Clea... - 0 views

Batteries have to contain all of the chemicals on both sides of their energy releasing equation. The very best batteries available today can store about 0.4 MJ/kg (0.05 kw-hr/lb) including the cases and safety systems. In contrast, gasoline carries about 46 MJ/kg (5.7 kw-hrs/lb).\n\nEven with a 20% efficient IC engine, a gasoline tank stores 20 times as much energy as a battery of equal weight. As the vehicle is moving it gets rid of some of that weight. Battery powered vehicles must carry the full weight of their energy source.\n\nThe energy density difference also plays a key role in the time that it takes to put more energy back on the vehicle once a fuel load is consumed. A two minute fill-up of a 12 gallon tank puts the equivalent of 87 kilowatt-hours into the vehicle, again, taking into account the 20% thermal efficiency.\n\n87 kilowatt-hours in 2 minutes works out to 2.6 MegaWatts. Even with a 220 volt connection, that would require about 11,800 amperes of current. Just imagine the size of the electric cables for that current.\n\nThere are certainly places and applications where electric vehicles have a role, but it is worth remembering that at least five or six generations of engineers have looked very hard at trying to meet transportation needs and they keep coming back to the same fact - when you want to move a vehicle, you need power, (energy per unit time).

GreenBizCafe » Blog Archive » How Much Electricity Does a Car Need? - 0 views

  • (The Volt will be a ful-sized four-passenger car with a range of about 65 kilometres using only its batteries. It is scheduled to go into production in the United States in 2010.)
  • The Volt will use a battery with a capacity of 16 kilowatt-hours of charge. But that battery won’t dip below eight kWh of charge, so a full nightly charge would be eight kWh - about the same amount of power as is consumed by a water heater, a plasma TV or a computer and monitor left on all day.

IET Forums - electricity so unbelievably powerful - 0 views

  • Take an artificial pacemaker. This device transmits an electrical voltage to the biological pacemaker cells of the heart. In a healthy human, these pacemaker cells generate their own action potential, an electrical waveform of about 100 millivolts. This may not sound like much energy until we remember that this electrical potential is sustained across an insulating membrane only five nanometers thick. That is 5 billionths of a meter. So the energy of an action potential is almost 20,000,000 volts per meter. Compare this to the 12,000 volts per meter at a standard wall plug. Healthy pacemaker cells spark the electrical wave that drives heart muscle contraction. When these cells malfunction, an artificial pacemaker may be implanted to take over. Waves of electrical voltage generated at the metal lead of the artificial device cross over to living tissue and initiate normal muscle contraction.

Allied Wire & Cable's line of Wind Turbine Cable consists of our WTTC rated GreenLINX™ Wind Power Cable. Wind turbine cable requires high quality, durability and high performance to withstand the rigors of wind power environments. Wind turbine cables can be exposed to several different forces, including Mother Nature. Oil, solvent, chemical and fuel resistant, GreenLINX ™ wind turbine cable can withstand these forces and more. Allied carries five different types of wind turbine cable, all part of the GreenLINX™ line of wind power cable. All five types are WTTC, 1000 volt rated, constructed of bare copper conductors.

A roll-out possibly to close for comfort, but backed up by a corporate release, not aspirations in the blogosphere. 2 years is pretty close, and actually about the time that the new renewables directive is expected to enter into force in the EU.

Electrinium Battery Remains Un-replicated - 0 views

  • The device claim is that it can put out as much as 10,000 Volts of power per cubic inch of device.  Electrinium is said to be to electricity as magnets are to magnetism.  Talk about an ideal solution to the oil/energy Earth destruction paradigm!  Yet, in the numerous years that this author has known about this device, no one has reported even trying to build it, much less successful replication

The Airstream Hydrogen Hybrid - 0 views

  • HySeries Drive plug-in hybrid. Electricity only for 25 miles (with a 336-volt lithium-ion battery pack). Serial hybrid, with the fuel cell (or think biofuel system) recharging the battery pack, not directly driving the wheels.

Funky 300 MPG Car Taking Pre-Orders | EcoGeek | Written, October, Car, Motorcycle, Think - 0 views

  • Aptera has listed the full electric at $26,900 and the diesel hybrid at $29,900. As noted, the diesel hybrid will be a series plug-in, just like the impending Chevy Volt. This means that the car will run 100% on electric power, but a diesel engine will charge the batteries when they get low.

  • The soleckshaw is basically motor-assisted bicycle that features a motor driven by a 36-volt battery recharged - or swapped - at a solar charging station. The soleckshaw can carry three passengers and can go about 12.5 miles per hour. Drivers can drive under their own power on flat roads, then switch on the motor to go up hills or give themselves a break when the load gets too heavy.

Technology Review: Novel Batteries Get a Boost - 0 views

  •
General Motors has announced it will work directly with A123 Systems, a start-up based in Watertown, MA, to develop batteries that are fine-tuned for the Chevrolet Volt, an electric vehicle scheduled for production in 2010 or 2011. The new agreement between the companies is designed to speed the vehicle to market.
