Environmental Capital - WSJ.com : When Cheap Housing Isn't: How Transportation Changes ... - 0 views

  • Ballooning gasoline prices aren’t just changing how people drive—they may soon change where people live. With gas stuck above $3.00 a gallon, those cheaper houses in the suburbs can be a money-losing proposition in the end.

Report from "brave" Lithuania: more climate change please? « 3E Intelligence - 0 views

  • Renewables now accounts for about  8% of Lithuania’s energy consumption (see the Commission’s DG Energy’s fact sheet on Lithuania’s renewable energy situation of 2007). In its latest renewable energy proposal of 23 January 2008, the Commission has set a very ambitious target of 23% of renewables to be reached by Lithuania in 2020.

Tackling Climate Change Achievable And Affordable · Environmental Leader · Gr... - 0 views

  • The Paris-based Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development has released its 2008 Environmental Outlook. Without new policies, the world risks irreversibly damaging the environment and the natural resource base needed to support economic growth and well-being, according to the report. But the Outlook finds that tackling climate change, biodiversity loss, water scarcity and the health impacts of pollution is both achievable and affordable.

Future Scenarios - Introduction - 0 views

  • The simultaneous onset of climate change and the peaking of global oil supply represent unprecedented challenges for human civilisation. Global oil peak has the potential to shake if not destroy the foundations of global industrial economy and culture. Climate change has the potential to rearrange the biosphere more radically than the last ice age. Each limits the effective options for responses to the other. The strategies for mitigating the adverse effects and/or adapting to the consequences of Climate Change have mostly been considered and discussed in isolation from those relevant to Peak Oil. While awareness of Peak Oil, or at least energy crisis, is increasing, understanding of how these two problems might interact to generate quite different futures, is still at an early state.

IEEE Spectrum: Phase-Change Materials Could Boost Reconfigurable Chips - 0 views

  • A technology that would allow a computer chip to change the electrical resistance of some of its own wiring could lead to more-powerful reconfigurable microchips that can quickly adapt themselves to new tasks, researchers at IBM say.

  • With the UN Bali conference drawing closer, steelmakers have called on governments to adopt a sector-specific approach to tackling CO2 emissions from the iron and steel industry, saying "regional policies" such as the EU-ETS only shift the problem to Asian countries, where environmental rules are less stringent

US climate change bill does little for energy efficiency - 0 views

  • The long-awaited latest – and perhaps final – draft of the US energy and climate change bill was unveiled yesterday by Senators John Kerry and Joe Lieberman. But the American Council for an Energy-Efficient Economy (ACEEE) says the proposal does much less for energy efficiency than previous major climate change bills.

Can technology persuade us to save energy? - 3 views

  • Last week New Scientist reported that US emissions could be cut by more than 7 per cent if people changed their ways at home. Separate studies in US, Dutch and British homes have reported that 26 to 36 per cent of domestic energy use is "behavioural" – determined by the way we use machines, not the efficiency of the hardware itself. This means that "machines designed to change humans", as the persuasive technology group of Stanford University, California, calls them, could save us huge amounts of energy and money. Energy awareness Many projects are trying to make that happen, with two main motivations. One is to understand which facets of human nature can be manipulated to change behaviour. The other is to develop technical strategies to do so.

  • But sub-national governments can also significantly advance efforts to mitigate climate change. Provinces and municipalities around the world have indeed undertaken initiatives – sometimes working together across national boundaries – to reduce greenhouse-gas emissions. This includes jurisdictions in the largest-emitting countries – China, the United States, and India – as well as in the European Union.

ScienceDirect - Renewable and Sustainable Energy Reviews : Review on thermal energy sto... - 0 views

  • The use of a latent heat storage system using phase change materials (PCMs) is an effective way of storing thermal energy and has the advantages of high-energy storage density and the isothermal nature of the storage process. PCMs have been widely used in latent heat thermal-storage systems for heat pumps, solar engineering, and spacecraft thermal control applications. The uses of PCMs for heating and cooling applications for buildings have been investigated within the past decade. There are large numbers of PCMs that melt and solidify at a wide range of temperatures, making them attractive in a number of applications. This paper also summarizes the investigation and analysis of the available thermal energy storage systems incorporating PCMs for use in different applications.

A novel form-stable phase change wallboard (PCW) was prepared for low-temperature latent heat thermal energy storage by incorporating eutectic mixture of capric acid and stearic acid and gypsum wallboard. Thermal properties of form-stable PCW were measured by DSC analysis. The form-stable PCW has good thermal reliability with respect to the changes in its thermal properties after accelerated thermal cycling.

Solar Thermal Power + New Direct Current Electric Grid Could Make US Renewable Energy W... - 0 views

  •
Fred Pearce has framed his latest opinion piece in Yale Environment 360 as one about Europe fiddling around with its climate change commitment (with German Chancellor Angela Merkel as lead violin), while the US is poised to reengage with the world under the Obama administration. What it's really about though is what the US would need to do to take that lead, and it all has to do with renewable energy. Though some of this may be recap for avid TreeHugger readers, it's worth repeating: Stephen Chu Appointment a Good Sign Beyond his stated commitment to dealing with climate change during the campaign, Pearce indicates that the appointment of Stephen Chu as energy secretary is the real sign that the US could soon lead the renewable energy/climate change race. Not only has he done pioneering research on solar power, energy efficiency and cellulosic biofuels at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory, he's also an advocate of a nationwide expansion of the electric grid to bring renewable energy from where it's most easily generated (west of the Mississippi) to where the greatest demand is (east of the river).
