This article reflects on the progressive changes in the redesign of healthcare and how the role of the APRN will simultaneously evolve to allow practitioners to practice to the expected level of their capabilities.

Pediatric NP's began training in 1965 in order to enhance the role of the pediatric nurse; however, since then PNP's are seeking increased autonomy from MD's in order to work to the full extent of the knowledge and skills. The article describes how PNP's are aptly trained to assess kid's who are abused, exploited, neglected, or need immunizations. As a result, PNP's have a unique role, separate from MD's, to enhance any practice.

Talks about the emotional roller coaster than transitioning can cause but also recognizes that there are resources and they need to be utilized.

This is an article that discusses possible frameworks for phases of transition from student RN to becoming an FNP. With the limited research that has been done in the area it is difficult to know exactly how to support students in their transition to be a provider, but this is a foundation which can be built upon.

An interesting article about an APRN fellowship. It is a yearlong program that has classroom sessions, simulations, and peer-to-peer support networks. The program is aimed at facilitating the APRN transition and reducing burnout. It seems to have some good results!

Exploring the transition from registered nurse to family nurse practitioner.

This article reviews the importance and benefits of having a real strong and supportive mentor during that transition from student ARPN to practitioner. This is a hard time for many to adjust to and having a mentor is a key element for new practitioners to safely make the transition and to maximize their learning.

The author figures out the challenges in interdisciplinary teamwork among healthcare providers. These challenges are worth attention if we hope to do well in interdisciplinary teamwork.

This article discusses how interdisciplinary teamwork is experienced at three levels: healthcare professionals, patients, and healthcare organizations.

The points made by the author - reaching decisions collectively, making sure everyone is committed to the same purpose and goal, full participation, understanding the work of other disciplines - can be applied in any type of teamwork setting for successful outcomes. However, with healthcare the author points out that effective teamwork can lead to decreasing health care costs, improved patient safety, and decreasing workload through shared responsibilities. All areas that can allow for better patient care and more efficient use of time and financial resources.

Research article that discusses practice setting characteristics that were either helpful or stressful to new grad NPs during their first year of practice. Primary care settings in Canada were sites used in this study, but the results would likely apply to acute care settings as well.

This systematic literature search article is in two parts: deinition and application of telehealth for APRNs and describes an approach for telehealth training for APRNs. APRNs can utilize telehealth technologies to improve patient access to care with cost-saving measures, collaborate with other disciplines, and remote patient monitoring. Students need to become competent and skilled with the evolving technologies and regulations to improve patient outcomes with limited resources to healthcare.

This article details the researchers' efforts to describe the ability of nurse practitioners to reduce health disparities. By reviewing the literature, the researchers were able to create a "Nurse Practitioner Health Disparities Model" that outlines the many factors that influence a NP's ability to reduce health disparities. Outside actors, such as policymakers and insurance companies, can also influence the ability of nurse practitioners to reduce health disparities. Thus, the model is a useful tool in promoting full practice for APRNs.

While this article is not specific to the FNP specialty, I find it interesting because it discusses the evolving global role of APRNs.

This article provides a brief history of the APRN role and the advancement from a CRNA, to midwives, then to FNPs. The focus is the family nurse practitioner role. The author shows the connection with Erik Ericsson's stages of development and provides examples of how the role of the NP progressed through those stages. Examples are also provided from a world development perspective, as each country has also had to move through the same phases of development before moving on to the next. The author concludes that we (the U.S.) are still in the final stage of development (Integrity-older adult).

This resource provides a brief history of APRN and outlines the developmental steps in advanced practice roles that can be helpful know for countries where the role of APRN are being established or growing.

This is an older but fascinating article about a midwife working in Gardener, Massachusetts in the 19th century. Hanna continued to attend births of mostly the immigrant population of the city despite being told by courts to cease. She was convicted of "practicing medicine without a license" and had to pay many fines and spend 3 months in a correctional facility. Note that the charges brought against her were never from clients, but from the physicians working in the area.

This timeline is great as it shows monumental dates in history not only related to midwifery, but also to social justice, economic changes, political changes, etc. in our country. I think its important to relate what is going on in our profession to what is happening in the country/city/world in which we work. It creates some perspective on why things happen when they do.

This article discusses APRNs working in Title X Family Planning Clinics, what lead them to practice in these clinics, and why they remain practicing in these clinics as new opportunities for APRNs arise. APRNs are described by the authors as 'critical safety nets', as they play a major role in reproductive health services and provide care to vulnerable populations and rural communities. The findings of this study, which collected data through an online survey, can and will be used during policy change decisions to improve APRN satisfaction and retention.
