The History of Midwifery and Childbirth - A Time Line - 0 views

  •
This timeline is great as it shows monumental dates in history not only related to midwifery, but also to social justice, economic changes, political changes, etc. in our country. I think its important to relate what is going on in our profession to what is happening in the country/city/world in which we work. It creates some perspective on why things happen when they do.

The Intention of Advanced Practice Registered Nurses to Remain in Positions at Family P... - 0 views

  •
This article discusses APRNs working in Title X Family Planning Clinics, what lead them to practice in these clinics, and why they remain practicing in these clinics as new opportunities for APRNs arise. APRNs are described by the authors as 'critical safety nets', as they play a major role in reproductive health services and provide care to vulnerable populations and rural communities. The findings of this study, which collected data through an online survey, can and will be used during policy change decisions to improve APRN satisfaction and retention.

History of the women's health nurse practitioner - 1 views

  •
This article discusses the evolution of the WHNP. While I am in the FNP program, I plan to specialize in women's health which is why I picked this article. The conclusion of this article notes that the WHNP is moving to becoming a focus area in a FNP or ANP curriculum (or at least that was the author's opinion in 2009). I have found programs which allow for a specialty in women's and gender-related health care such as the following at Columbia and University of Pennsylvania. (Columbia: http://nursing.columbia.edu/course-list/Womens-Health ; U Penn: http://www.nursing.upenn.edu/whcs/Pages/WHCNPProgram.aspx)

Using Clinical Residency to Transition from Novice to Expert - Is it essential? - 0 views

  •
My intended area of practice is in HIV nursing. In my last post I provided a link to the competencies needed to be an advanced practice nurse in the field, and I talked a little bit about steps I'm taking to close that gap. To hopefully move me along the continuum from novice to expert. I thought this article was interesting and provided a broader approach in how nurses might use residency program for exactly that purpose. The article talks about DNPs but it is no different for the MSN prepared nurse. It seems that residencies may become more the norm in the future - and that might be good for all, new nurses and patients alike.

New law lets nurse practitioners get more involved - 1 views

  •
This article shares an experience of an NP in Nevada who had been trying to care for patients in under served areas but was having difficulty finding MDs to sign agreements with in those areas. This inhibited her ability to treat people in need but, thankfully, a new law was passed July 1 that enabled her to treat these people to the full extent her education taught her to, without having to rely on an agreement with an MD. It is important for us to remain aware of our scope of practice but also to fight for our ability to practice to the full extent we're being taught to do.

Impact out of how PCNP's in palliative care are making a positive and sometimes neutral (no negative) impact in healthcare and healthcare cost. There are better articles (from abstract alone), but no full length available for some reason via Emory Database/CINAHL/google (just not free/inaccessible).
