The articles defines the basic roles and educational qualification that must be met by advanced practiced nurses, and their certifying and accrediting bodies at the state and national levels. The article then highlights the legal and liability issues that APRN's may face, as a result of their expanding practice roles. A situation which is increased due to APRN's having to practice by both their state board of registered nursing rules and regulations as well as the rules and regulations of their advanced standing agency. The article lists six liability issues that APRN's could potentially face including unlicensed practice of medicine, failure to adequately diagnose, negligence in the delivery of healthcare, conduct exceeding physician delegated authority resulting in harm, conduct exceeding scope of practice resulting in harm, and failure to refer appropriately. The article is a sobering one that all APRN's need to consider in regards to their practice, broadening scope and potential liabilities.
