Linear video is the traditional form and most of us are familiar with it. The user can select play, pause, rewind, and fast forward the content in this type of video. Elearning makes sense economically and logistically It is the cheapest way to get a clear, consistent message to the most people in the least amount of time. For those of us working with clients in IT or healthcare, what better way to educate workers on the use of technology than to use technology to do the job? We've been using elearning to train workers across all industries in some skills, particularly manufacturing line workers in processes or transactional workers in soft skills. But this trend is accelerating and spreading beyond line workers and manufacturing workers on the floor, and now reaches to the upper echelons of the corporate hierarchy. Today, we are using many elearning modalities to educate, inform and transform at all levels of the organization - webinars, online courses, videos, e-modules, pdfs, list servs - the list goes on and on and on. Any type of computer-based learning from your laptop, your iPad or your smart phone, anything you can grab from the web, download, participate in virtually, log onto or phone into, is elearning. Instructional Design Strategy for Achieving Alignment Which Comes First, Activities or Assessments? We have been told all our lives to put things in order. Keep your tax files in order. Keep your house in order. Alphabetize your index. Number your chapters. Write the introduction before the conclusion. Yet, sometimes actually doing things in the order in which they appear as a final product is not the most effective approach. Take course design for example. When we see the finished product of an online course, we see the objectives followed by activities and resources, and finally the assessment. While Western learning styles have not changed significantly since the turn of the twenty first century, the increased use of technological tools have. Like most New Technology evangelist, e-learning developers are quick to adapt new tool sets which help to promote content development and delivery of curricula. We are excited when tablets become lighter, faster, and the content integration is all but seamless. However what about the learners themselves? Do they have access to the plethora of tools? Is this new media and curricula developed to support all styles of learning, from the Visual to the Kinesthetic?
