  •
So you've heard someone talking about QR codes? Or you've spotted these strangely-patterned black and white squares appearing in advertising material? Or you know what they are but just want to see how you can best make use of them? Well here are resources which will help to explain what QR codes are, what they look like, how you can create them, as well as how others are using them both within and outwith the classroom.

I Declare an… iPad Oath - 0 views

  •
Last year the middle school felt a need to create an iPad Oath that addressed specific classroom behaviors and legislated appropriate use beyond the existing R.U.G. (Responsible Use Guidelines). After reviewing multiple middle school AUP's and iPad forms online and our own existing elementary iPad Oath, I decided to concoct one of my own using similar ingredients. (The back of the form includes a space for both parent and student signature.)

3 Views on the Difference Between a Data Visualization and an Infographic - ReadWriteCloud - 0 views

  • Information graphics are visual representations of information, data or knowledge often used to support information, strengthen it and present it within a sensitive context. They are specific, context-sensitive and often times hand-crafted. Data visualizations are visual displays of measured quantities by means of the combined use of a coordination system, points, lines, shapes, digits, letters quantified by visual attributes. They are general, context-free and often times created automatically. Both can be static, animated or interactive. So, I think the difference is more about the objective. Information graphics are used to tell a story or answer a question. Data visualizations are used to let the user find his own story or answer.

Data Visualization and Infographics Resources - Smashing Magazine - 0 views

  •
"Data visualizations and infographics can make complex datasets easier to understand and comprehend. By creating a graphical represenatation of data and statistics, complicated concepts and information can make more sense in less time. Many visualizations focus on representing a specific set of data or statistical information. Others focus on less-concrete topics, providing a visual representation of abstract concepts. Generally speaking, the first type appear more like graphs or charts and the latter are often more creative and imaginative."

Curriculum Online - What is Numeracy? - 0 views

  •
The Meaning of Numeracy The complex world of the twenty-first century places demands on its citizens that require them to engage competently with an ever-increasing range of activities that have their basis in the world of mathematics. As a result, there is a rapidly growing emphasis on the importance of creating numerate school leavers. The connection between numeracy and mathematics and the tendency to use the words interchangeably can lead to confusion as they are not synonyms of each other. However, to be numerate requires mathematical skills. The term 'mathematical literacy' is becoming more widely used both in Australia and overseas and is defined by the OECD (2004) as:

We chose to use measurement for our numeracy video. We felt that measurement is an important numeracy skill used in everyday life. We believe we did this well. We met all criteria. For the first time we used the flip cameras, movie-maker and youtube to: create, edit and upload our video. We thoroughly enjoyed this process and felt it was an interesting assignment. :)
