Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) - 0 views

  •
The Schoolwide Enrichment Model (SEM) (Renzulli, 1977; Renzulli & Reis, 1985, 1997) is widely implemented as an enrichment program used with academically gifted and talented students and a magnet theme/enrichment approach for all schools interested in high-end learning and developing the strengths and talents of all students. The major goal of the SEM is the application of gifted education pedagogy to total school improvement. The SEM provides enriched learning experiences and higher learning standards for all children through three goals; developing talents in all children, providing a broad range of advanced-level enrichment experiences for all students, and providing advanced follow-up opportunities for young people based on their strengths and interests. The SEM focuses on enrichment for all students through high levels of engagement and the use of enjoyable and challenging learning experiences that are constructed around students' interests, learning styles, and preferred modes of expression.

They don't all really need laptops, do they? - 0 views

  •
I've been getting this question a lot lately from administrators, parents, and taxpayers. The question isn't malicious, but rather comes from folks with a vested interest in making sure that our technology dollars directly benefit students. Does giving teachers laptops directly benefit students? For people who aren't actively teaching in a classroom, that's a hard question to answer.\n\nI don't think it's very hard for teachers to answer the question, though, especially at the secondary level. For most people entering the business world, there is no question that they will have a computer on their desk when they are hired. It might be a laptop, a desktop, a shared desktop facilitated with some sort of flextime arrangement, or even a computer allowance so that the new hire can buy a machine that makes them the most productive. However, it's not terribly likely that they'll just be handed a dry erase marker and a whiteboard, pointed towards a copy machine, and told to go for it.

New Systems Keep a Close Eye on Online Students at Home - Chronicle.com - 0 views

"Tucked away in a 1,200-page bill now in Congress is a small paragraph that could lead distance-education institutions to require spy cameras in their students' homes. It sounds Orwellian, but the paragraph - part of legislation renewing the Higher Education Act - is all but assured of becoming law by the fall. No one in Congress objects to it. The paragraph is actually about clamping down on cheating. It says that an institution that offers an online program must prove that an enrolled student is the same person who does the work."

Wired Campus: Professor Encourages Students to Pass Notes During Class -- via... - 0 views

  • most of his students were unfamiliar with Twitter, the microblogging service that limits messages to 140 characters.

See--just because they're young doesn't mean they know everything digital!
  • others in the class would respond with notes encouraging the student to raise the topic out loud.

      Citizenship!
  • I’m not a full-time faculty member,” he said. “I use my classrooms as an applied-research lab to decide what to promote as new solutions for our campus.”
    • Sarah Hanawald

All ed tech people should think of themselves this way and keep teaching in "applied-research labs"

  • I couldn’t help thinking that it sounded like a recipe for chaos, and I told him so
  • He couldn’t get two screens, so he had students bring in their laptops

Skip the screens and the laptops and go straight to the phones :-)

Is encouraging a "back-stream" of communication helpful or counter-productive in class?
  •
What about trying this during a faculty meeting at school? Probably using cover it live instead of twitter just to make it accessible to all. I really like the notion that when Ed Tech faculty teaches, it should be a lab environment.

Getting Things Done Explained for Students - Getting Things Done - Lifehacker - 0 views

  • turn everything into an action
    • Bruce Vigneault

This is a must. The action should describe the behavior that needs to be done.
    • Bruce Vigneault

Also, specify 'when' and 'where' this action will take place.
  • Way too many students think of an agenda or a planner as synonymous with a to-do list. It doesn't make any sense to write a new assignment down on a planner under a date—that's deadline-oriented thinking that just begs for procrastination.
    • Bruce Vigneault

I do the same thing. By putting it on a calendar, it tells me that I don't have to think about till then....
  • This will probably consist mostly of questions you'd like to ask another student or the teacher.
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • if you miss your inbox for a day, that means you won't see it until the day after, which is when it's due
  • Instead, just reserve some time on your calendar to get the work done every week; right after class is actually remarkably efficient, but there's nothing wrong with just scheduling an hour right before your class to hammer out the work.

Teach IT - Now! - 21 views

via @H270 Heather Hurley Our mission is to provide K-8 technology teachers with meaningful technology course materials that weaves together terminology, tools, how things work, inventors, history, trends, and engineering career opportunities to help them help their students have the tools to succeed in every day life and the ability to take it to the next level if they choose. The materials help students: * be more technically aware; * be better prepared in life by understanding the technology they already use; * be more competitive in a world that is becoming more technologically savvy; * get introduced to career opportunities in technology and engineering.

Justification for using blogs/nings etc to connect students with people outside the classroom, even globally
  • Students are encouraged to be critical thinkers, to take responsibility for their own learning, and to reflect on their learning processes.
  • Through their reading and through interaction with others, students are encouraged to see existing situations in new ways, identify alternative explanations, and perceive connections that can assist in problem-solving.

  • Intercultural understanding Students develop intercultural understanding as they learn to understand themselves in relation to others. This involves students valuing their own cultures and beliefs and those of others, and engaging with people of diverse cultures in ways that recognise differences, create connections and cultivate respect between people.

Top 5 Search Tools for Finding Flickr Images for Use in Education - 0 views

  •
The top five search tools for finding Flickr images are designed to help teachers and students locate just the right image for use in any subject area and project. Without these tools finding the right image on this image hosting site is often an impossible, or at least a tedious, task. The value of this site is its ability to provide digital pictures which are often impossible for a teacher to obtain any other way. Like everything else on the internet, trying to find something is like trying to find a needle in a haystack. This where the top five search tools become valuable resources for teachers and students trying to find images comes into play. These search engines are specifically designed to search the more than three billion pictures on the Flickr hosting site.

What Does the Online Digital Footprint in Your Classroom Look Like? - 0 views

  •
In contrast to the digital footprint you use for your personal learning network, this focus is on the online digital footprint students' use in your science or math classroom. The power of a well designed digital footprint brings the capacity to transform a classroom into an online learning community. Within this community your students use digital tools to create and develop a personal learning network.
