PowerPoint Presentations Beyond Note Taking: Education Technology Applications That Imp... - 0 views

  •
The use of PowerPoint presentations in schools takes advantage of education technology integration strategies and techniques. However, student learning is not improved when these presentations are merely a substitute for note taking bullets from older overhead projectors. To take advantage of the power of this technology, the elimination of boring slide shows must be replaced with interactive story telling that keeps students engaged.

Share RSS Feeds via AIR with ShareFire - ReadWriteWeb - 0 views

  •
When reading your RSS feeds, do you prefer a local application versus one that is online-only? If so, look no further than ShareFire. Besides being platform-independent (courtesy of Adobe Air), it is also completely free and open-source. It was created with article sharing in mind, as its name implies. According to its creators, Christian Cantrell and Dan Koestler, this was a priority. ShareFire supports sharing stories to AIM, Twitter and email, and posting articles to many services including Delicious, Digg, MySpace and Windows Live Bookmarks (now called favorites).

Stats: Old Media's Decline, New Media's Ascent - 0 views

  •
Quick: what was the most widely-used form of media in 2008? If you guessed Internet news sites, blogs, or social networks, you'd be way off. Network TV news (NBC, CBS, ABC) is still used by the highest percentage of adult Internet users, with local newspapers and local TV news occupying the 2nd and 3rd positions, respectively, in a recently released survey from Ketchum. While old media is still on top, the trends in the survey, which has been conducted each of the last three years, point to a familiar story: media consumption habits are quickly changing. That said, some forms of new media are performing much better than others. For example: - Blogs are now used by 24% of Internet users, up from 13% in 2006 - Social networks are now used by 26% of Internet users, up from 17% in 2006 - Videocasts are now used by 11% of Internet users, up from 6% in 2006 Slower growers include: - RSS feeds: growing from 5 to 7 percent - Podcasts: growing from 5 to 7 percent - Business news sites: flat at 8 percent

Google Earth takes you inside refugee camps - 0 views

  •
Google and the UN High Commission on Refugees talked up a partnership in which Google provides the pro version of its Google Earth software, its Sketchup 3D software for creating objects and structures, and extensive documentation on how to use the system to create a .KML layer. The result is a (hopefully) informative overlay that works with both Google Earth and Google Maps to tell visual stories.

Second Life Herald: Woodbury University Island Destroyed - 0 views

  • Sometime Saturday, Woodbury University’s Second Life island dropped off the map of the virtual world. Second Life players have grown accustomed to intermittent outages from their metaverse service provider, sometimes spinning fanciful stories about tsunami and seismic activity as part of in-world roleplay. A virtual catastrophe does not appear to have been the cause of Woodbury’s demise, however. It appears the complete disappearance of an entire virtual university was a disciplinary move on the part of Linden Lab - for Terms of Service (TOS) violations.
