    This project has students examining statistics using blogs. For this project, the teacher gave her class data from a survey given to students from the year prior. The classes goal was to tell a story of the prior years class using statistics. Students had to find tools online to create visual representations of their data. They used their class blog as a hub for exchanging good resources and ideas. When they finished creating their visuals and summarizing the data, they finalized their work in a personal blog entry. Then students shared their blog posts and were given time to read and comment on other students interpretations. This a great project because it gives students an opportunity to write about math which doesn't happen as often as it should. It also gives students insight into all the different ways a set of data can be perceived. I like extending this idea of blogging to being a hub where students finalize and reflect on all of their projects during the year. As an English teacher, I value writing. I really value and chance I can to incorporate writing into my math class.

Student Blogging Project: Creating a Link Post – Teach It Slant - 0 views

    This long-term project has students creating a blog that serves as their reading response journal for the year. For this assignment, students created a blog to replace their hardcopy notebooks. As students read various things in their English class, they use this one place to do all reading activities. Once they have finished posting, they then receive time to go and comment on other people's posts. This gives students a place to practice their writing skills with an authentic audience. As the year goes on and students get more comfortable with commenting, students could end up having rich conversations based on each other's writing. I like this because it is easy to set up and use for the course of the year. This can be applied to almost any subject area. Even a math teacher could use something like this for students to summarize their learning and bounce ideas off of their peers. The functionality and utility of this project make it a must-have for educators of all subject areas.

Character journaling through social media - 0 views

    This project also has students making a Facebook account for their character and using these accounts to communicate with other students. This is similar to the remixing assignment, but it is a long-term assignment rather than a culminating activity. Students start by making a Facebook page for their character and post status updates as the class reads the book. They talk from the perspective of their character and it allows students to expand their thinking. When students are done, they use their page to have discussions about the novel as a class and out of character. This is a great way for students to step into the chose of different characters they are reading about and has students participate in multi-level writing. This is applicable to numerous different reading projects and something I could see myself using in my English class.

Remixing To Kill a Mockingbird | The Macmillan Community - 0 views

    This project has students retelling a story through the use of a social media account. For this project, the story of To Kill a Mockingbird was retold with an Instagram account. The account was made from the perspective of the main character and pictures were added with different captions to explain the story. This allowed the students to use contemporary social media norms in the context of older stories. I like this project because it forces students to highlight the key points of a novel without simply writing them all out. If everyone in the class was using the same platform, they could add each other and comment on each other's posts. This would be a good way for students to see stories from the eyes of their character and add new layers of depth to stories. This is an idea that can be used with many different social media platforms and with many different stories. To Kill a Mockingbird is read by the Freshman in my district and this is a project I could see myself using.

Shakespeare 2.0: A Social Network Project by Jordan Kent on Prezi - 0 views

    This project has students creating a blog account for a character in a Shakespeare play and updating it throughout the unit. Students each get assigned a character and have to create a blogging platform for their character. They use this site for all of their assignments during their unit. They need to have a blog post for every scene their character is in and comment on other scenes that their character isn't in. They also need to memorize one passage and record themselves saying it on their blog. I like this as an organizational tool for the assignments over a unit. It gives students a good way to interact with each other and practice their writing while they deepen their understanding of Shakespeare. This project is great because it can be applied to any reading that is being done in a class over a long period of time. A Shakespeare play is read every year in high school in my district and this is something I would want to use in my English class to support that.

    This is a summary of the work of Lave and Wenger on communities of practice. It focuses on the need for social participation for learning. The article also highlights how learning is central to human identity.

    Wenger and Lave first used the term Communities of Practice (CoPs) in 1991 and furthered their explanation in 1998. CoPs are a process of social learning in which a group of like-minded people regularly collaborate with the objective to learn something. Wenger specifically notes that this definition does not include "intentionality," stating that learning can happen incidentally. This article goes on to explain the three components of a CoP: domain, community, and practice. Finally, the summary ends with a list of methods commonly seen to collaborate in a CoP including problem solving, seeking others' experience, discussing developments, and mapping knowledge

    This article also explains how participation is a huge part of communities of practice. It states that these communities are groups that have something in common and people can learn from one another through the interactions taking place. One big focus is how the participation that is going on needs to be active and continuous. A person's active participation can then help motivate them and others in the community to continually want to learn.

This allows for a quick understanding without having to dissect the meaning of each word of the definition.     Communities of Practice were first used in 1991 by Jena Lave and Etienne. A CoP is social learning aimed around a specific subject with people who have common interests and collaborate over a large period of time in an online community. The learning that takes place is often natural and happens through the social interactions. There are three requirements for a proper CoP. The first is that there needs to be a domain. The people involved in the CoP need to have shared interests. The second is that there needs to be a community. The people involved need to interact and engage in activities to help and share information with each other. The final necessity is that there needs to be a practice. This means that they are actively engaged within the community and work to inform everyone involved. CoPs work using social interactions to create the learning community.

    This short but informative article helps get to the root question of "what are communities of practice?" The article describes the three main components of the communities of practice theory which domain (shared, common interest), community (sharing of info, activities), and practice (members of COP need to be practitioners of the domain and not just casual observer). To be a true COP, the above components must be present. The article breaks down Wengers belief that "groups of people who share a concern of a passion for something they do and learn how to do it better as the interact regularly". It discussed how COP's are becoming more present through online communities formed through the Internet and social media. COP's are being seen as avenues that promote innovation and building of social capital through the spreading of knowledge.

Professional Learning Communities- Can Our Students Do This Too? - 0 views

    In this issue of CUE (Computer-Using Educators), the main theme is Personal Learning Networks. "PLN: Face-to-Face to The Net", "PLN: New Ways to Interact and Broaden Our Horizons" or "Overcoming the Barriers to Effective Ongoing Staff Development Through Online Communities of Practice" are some of the articles compiled in this CUE issue. Authors explain that other members of the PLN are the most important aspect, how empowering it is to share ideas and resources with a worldwide network or the way experienced/tenure teachers are been helped by younger teachers to develop computer-based competences.

    This is a volume of Advancing Student Achievement through Technology: On Cue. It has many articles that I plan to read through, but the one that really caught my eye is "Professional Learning Communities- Can Our Students Do This Too?" on page 10. While it is not so much an explanation of a Professional Learning Community (PLC) I believe it is a great testament to what we are researching and trying to do through this course. The author was urged by her district to encourage PLCs in her 6th grade English classroom. With adults improving their education through the use of technology she feels her students should be doing it too. It gave many great quotes from the 6th grade students and I believe it is an encouraging article as we being to look at social media and the possible uses it can have within a classroom.

    This is a great paper talking about connectivity with "what we learn" "How we learn" and "Where we Learn." The author is from Chile is give a good perspective on this works world wide.

    Thomas Baker, the author of this work and a TESOL educator, first explores connectivism including the definition and theory in his article and then relates this theory to EFL teaching. Baker connects the tectonic shifts in connectivism to the digital age of learning where learners can become creators instead of just consumers as well as collaborate with anyone, anywhere, at any time due to technology. The article concludes with three examples of teachers and the strategies or tools they utilize in their teaching that makes them "connected" to connectvism.
