I'm looking for a chat that I can have students participate in, so I came here to see what chats are listed. This may be interesting to folks who are just looking for a Twitter chat to attend.

Here are some great Twitter Chat's taking place at different times. I am looking forward to hopefully finally taking part in some chats through this class and beyond!

I love this idea, I have not played around with Twitter chats too much. But I think they are an excellent idea and great ideas to add an element of fun and interaction.

I've tried Twitter chats before. However, the free flow of ideas and different response rates make it hard to follow and respond to. I think I'd do better in a moderated, specific Twitter chat

This study observed and surveyed undergraduate students in a teacher certification program use Twitter to form personal learning networks. Researchers were interested in how students perceived Twitter before and after group discussion. Additionally, researchers wanted to know if Twitter was an effective medium for group discussion. Although some students had frustrations with Twitter's structure, most had a positive experience in using it for networking.

I like this article because it shows how social media is rapidly transforming all aspects of our professional lives. At first when I started reading it, I wondered what are the benefits of Twitter over the chat function in many Learning Management Systems. But then I realized students are more likely connected to Twitter with several devices. The chat session would stay around longer than the course page in the LMS. Additionally, the PLN created by the synchronous chat session exists outside of the classroom walls and can continue long after the class is over. The article was correct to cite that one of the drawbacks is the lack of critical thought that goes into Twitter feeds. The low number of characters allowed limits the ability to express thoughts clearly. However, if it is used to organize PLNs it becomes an effective tool as the participants in the study all attested.

The study supported the belief that Twitter chats provide a place where learners can be exposed to widely differing perspectives, not limited by geographical or socioeconomic constraints: "Twitter chats . . . to communicate to other professionals you may not even know but you will absolutely learn from them and what they have to say." I enjoyed the anecdote of the student who found himself in the same chat room as his school principal father!

A few months ago we started up a new Twitter chat series, #Bufferchat. So far, we've talked about everything from productivity to social media monitoring and lots of other topics in between. These days, we have up to 185 participants each week, sending out nearly 2,000 tweets. It's a true delight!

Using Edmodo, students discuss with other global classrooms about various aspects of their lives. Teachers will guide chat topics, and students seek to understand and appreciate the opinions and cultures of others.

Twitter chat on Tech Tools June 16th 2016

This research effort developed by Barbara F. Hartigan, Ed.D. and Marialice B.F.X. Curran, Ph.D at University of Saint Joseph that looks at connectivism in the context of using social media as a mentorship program for pre-service teachers. It is based off the researchers witnessing teachers on Twitter who engage in the Twitter chat #kinderchat mentoring a first year kindergarten teacher through their weekly chats. This developed into a research project where they embedded social media into the program for 19 pre-service teachers. They used mostly Twitter, Skype, and blogging and found that all of the participants learn from and value learning and teaching ideas and methodology obtained from their social media interactions. They note that next steps would be to follow those educators into their classrooms to see their continued development using social media.

SUMMARY: Interplay between student and teacher in which each characterizes an LMS and PLE respectfully. In the end, the LMS can't stop himself from evolving into a PLE, similar to what we are starting to see in the "real world." This one really helped me see the distinction between the two systems.

Ms. Tolisano launched her "Around the World With 80 Schools" project with a goal to introduce her school's students to peers in countries around the globe. She built a social-networking site using Ning for teachers from all countries who wanted to participate. Tolisano sets up meetings between classes using Skype, students prepare a list of questions and chat with students in Canada, Finland, New Zealand, and Spain, among a long list of others.

New Milford High School in New Jesrsey has embraced the use of social media. One example of use had students blogging daily during a field trip to Europe to visit Holocaust sites.

Taken from a twitter chat using the hashtag #EdTechChat, this article lists the most commonly cited tech tools which teachers use. Many of them are new to me, so I am going to have to investigate further.
