    Dr. George Siemens discusses his experiences with connectivism and how it reshaped his perceptions of the relationship between student, teacher, and information. He believes in this newly inter-connected world, knowledge itself becomes even more of a network. Beyond the network connections in the brain, the social networks on the internet have become a new way for people to know, understand, and retain information.

    It's hard for me to believe that blogs have been around for more than 15 years ago! He's been blogging since the "late 90s, early 2000s." I appreciate his idea that learning is really a socially connected process because of technology.

Personal Learning Networks and Your Personal Expertise - 0 views

    I was reminded that Google tries to rank sites for me based upon what it thinks I want. David Loertscher addressed siloing, which means your information group is too small and possibly too like-minded. Loertscher advocates that one should open your net just a bit. He suggests seeking diverse experts to follow on the Internet and identifies some of his favorites to gain a variety of voices.

The Network Is The Learning - 1 views

    First, I am struck that this 7 year old video is still current in light of all that changes with knowledge. Second, Siemens explains Network, Node and their importance to Connectivism. He also addresses this need for us to remain current. He mentions that more important and quicker means of staying current is through our Networks. He further mentions the point that if we don't keep up with what is going on in education we become obsolete. Lastly, he mentioned dropping links that direct you away from your knowledge quest.

    I like that Siemens talks about how adding one more connection, or node, to a network amplifies the entire network and that some nodes become obsolete over time. However, he doesn't address how to filter the information or how to choose the nodes. But, this is a very short talk :)

    I liked his comment about staying current in our own education, learning and teachings. Being connected to the internet/network helps us be current, up to date and we are able to do that because we can connect to the network 24/7.

    I have noticed a few YouTube links, which concerns me a bit that I never thought of looking there myself. Clearly I need to extend my "web," as it could lead me to resources such as this. It was refreshing to hear the information presented rather than comb through a long article. Sticking point for me was referencing the need to stay current. I am hoping that this course, as well as others in this program, will significantly help with that.

    It is amazing how diverse Khan Academy has become. They are great for math, but I even use them in my social studies classroom. They provide simple, yet detailed quick lessons on a lot of the major topics we cover. Provides a great resource for my students to utilize when they have questions or missed a certain topic!

    Thanks for sharing this!! I work in Higher Ed. So I always thought the Khan Academy was for very young kids. It does appear that is still who it is geared towards, but looking around I can see some beneficial information for all ages. Great resource!!

    Khan Academy is one of the most popular tutorial websites on the internet. This website covers every subject you can think of with step by step tutorial videos along with the option to practice the concepts as well. The students receive feedback from the practice and the tutorials provide detailed instructions for each lesson.

    iNaturalist is a social networking app for naturalists. It harnesses the power of crowd sourcing by enabling any person, with a mobile phone and access to the internet, the opportunity to participate in citizen science. Users create 'observations' by posting images of the local flora and fauna. If the observations include geolocation/time data and the specimens, are confirmed by two other users, then it becomes research grade. This means it could be used in real studies being conducted by scientists, such as herpetologists and botanists. The app is great for identifying wildlife and connecting students with experts.

    Here is a very complex study. Fortunately, the highlights tell us some important findings. This study went with the understanding that teachers have organically formed professional learning networks using the Internet, and report that they like them. This study focused on putting some data behind that, which it has provided. As a teacher, I found this quote very refreshing, about a researcher that "argued that top-down teacher PD in schools often aligns with hierarchical structures that de-skill teachers from their intellectual work by treating them as passive recipients of mandates. Even the term "professional development" conveys that teachers are "deficient and in need of developing and directing." In my own PLN, I have learned much more about teaching and learning from an 8th grade math teacher than I have in any of my administration-mandated social studies PD sessions.

    I'll be honest, I did not read the entire study, but the highlights from this article and the abstract once again confirmed what I'm starting to realize. We are teaching in a way that is behind the times when it comes to the current ways students learn naturally. We are fighting their expectations trying to bottle them into the box that is traditional education.

His simple and easy to follow explanation creates a solid base from which one can expand their understanding of the theory and how it is put into practice.

    I liked this brief explanation that comes straight from the source! In essence, I think watching the video and listening to a person explain it solidified it faster than multiple articles, thus illustrating the concepts of connectivism.
