Annenberg Media provides wonderful resources for teachers of almost any discipline from kindergarten though college. I use the American Passages series in my American Literature classes. Students can watch brief videos, which really bring content to life, but what is great is that Annenberg includes so much more than just videos -- discussion questions, other links to more information, glossaries of key terms, project and essay ideas. The drawback is the passive nature of the site. Students watch videos; they don't create them or edit them. The activities surrounding the videos incoporate reading, writing, and possibly discussing, but these approaches in isolation, as we have seen, do not always provide the most immersive or effective learning experience.

I was directed here after watching a video from secondclassroom.ning.com about using SL to create Machinima videos. It shows examples of Machinima movies for 6th and 8th grade. I am most interested in the integration of 6th grade social studies curriculum of Greek gods.

The main reason for inclusion in the top 10 was the impact a game had on the educational gaming field. Some of these are getting rather long in the tooth as far as games go, yet their impact is still being felt in educational research that was foundational or continues to be published.

Accredited 3D homeschool (middle and high school) This page features a video overview. Looks like they mash up their virtual worlds with a Moodle CMS. What do you think of how they use the virtual world component? Good, bad? other? Not sure what virtual world platform they're using.

This looks very interesting...I don't know how effective it would be. The student would have to be very self motivated to be successful. It does look like a type of Moodle they are using. I think this could be a good alternative for homeschool students though.

Ernst & Young Simulation using Second Life. Nice video showing the entire process. Very good example of using 3D social simulations to train in processes and procedures. Notice the coaching opportunities.

In Orlando, Florida a school district has created virtual field trips that allow students to travel to a variety of different areas without leaving the classroom. The field trips are a combination of real video, animations, interactive games and people. These simulations are geared for a younger audience.

This is an excellent video which could be used in Edtec700. It elucidates the seven sensibilities of virtual worlds, convincing the viewer of the value of these environments. I am ready to take the red pill. (You'll see what that means if you watch the video.)

This video was an amazing eye-opener to show what is already out there for science education.
