As our group members continue to adjust there original tagging titles, the most common tags seem to reflect our classification strategy. The tag cloud has definitely provided us with the most popular group tags titles, but as we still include our personalized additional tags, the cloud looks excessive. That is probably going to happen to our individual tag clouds as we continue to build our own library over the years. The main category titles will be obvious, but with all of the individualized end points, the cloud will be immense.

    Just to get it started:

    edtec448 was used by Jonathan

    professionaldevelopment was mentioned by Patty.

I'm sure there are more posted elsewhere I did not catch.

The current list of possible tags and associated content is as follows: These are subject to analysis and change.

    1. professionaldevelopment: organizations, continued education, profession (non-subject matter related) publications, etc.

    2. teacherresources: general physical/printable items, templates, rubrics, forms, etc.

    3. visualaids: clip art, animations, images, video, interactive sites, etc.

    4. currentevents: science and/or math publications, content specific news events, etc.

    5. technology: information/ideas regarding incorporating technological tools, updates in software, strategies, contact organizations or references, etc.

What if we had "studentapplications," as a tag which would include student practice/skill demonstrations/wikis/discussion forums, etc as mentioned above for #6?

And I think assessment would be a separate category from teacher resources. Good addition Jonathan.

What if we put pedagogy items into prof. dev.? Then we could have projects as an 8th category.

    Patty,

I'm with you on classifying based on content. Content is the deepest in meaning for me. I can separate more specific applications from the type of content. As far as some of the words used for tags, I see us having some similarites, but there will be significant differences too. For instance, will you use, "visualaids," as a tag? Or will you tag an item as a specific type of visual aid without using the tag, "visualaid?" From what I've seen so far, a website with animations will also have images other visual aids as well. So until I have an abundance of various visual aids for a subject like, "plate tectonics," I will us visualaids as my tag. In the future I may take a website with various visual aids and post a sticky note to the specific type of visual aid and indicate what I'm using it for.

    Dawn,

Interesting idea for your most general classification categories. Are you actually going to create a group diigo page that your students will access? Or is this classification just for you so if you are lesson planning, you are able to say, "Students are working individually for a portion of class on geometric shapes," and you know exactly where to look for those types of resources?

I flip-flop too much with how I conduct activities in my classes. For example, I may be a bit apprehensive about using an online resource so I'll try it as individuals, pairs, and then small groups, maybe even throw in a whole-group attempt. As I find resources, I may not be able to make a decision that quickly on how I would use them with my students. For a classification system, I must start with the topic, then break it down by the usage. Either way, as items are tagged with spaces between the words, we may be able to have our own systems and still contribute to our group's system. You may start with an individual student tag, but also include visual aids or Geometry. Therefore, if I were looking for geometry visual aids, I could find your resources without any idea you are using them for individual activities.

    Jonathan,

I see you had labeled sections within at least one of your lists. That is something I had not done. I applied it to my Earth Science folder, but I'm wondering if I could apply those same section titles to my other lists instead of having to go throught the process for each list. I'll check into it.
  • Jeremy Rellinger

I was not able to find a function to copy the section titles from one folder to another. Maybe some other time. Jonathan, as far as your classification system goes, one major difference from mine is your incorporation of edtec448 as a beginning tag. Although that may be helpful to know exactly all of the resources each of us provide and want to share in this group, it is one tag that will have too much information for me to process and sort through. I'm open-minded, so if I read a reasonable debate to include that tag in our system I could deal with it :)

Otherwise, a major similarity/difference combination, if that is possible, is your inclusion of topic specific tags. You know what topic and the reason for the resources use, so you have identified accordingly. The difference with my approace is I separated tag words. For example, I used "platetectonics visualaids," as a tag for those websites. The subject topic is first, followed by a shallower term, visual aids. How that helps anyone else out, I'm not sure. I guess if someone is interesed in plate tectonics, they have a tag to access. If they want a variety of visual aids to check out, they have a tag for that. Or if they want plate tectonic visual aids, they can search those tag topics together.

This is going to be tough to compromise on a group tagging system for the details of a website's usage. One site I may find to be strictly as a lesson resource, tagged as, "lessonresource," others may think of it as subject matter information, tagged as, "information."

The deepest, most meaningful organizational level for me is the overall subjects within my courses. Geology (withing Earth Science) I'm thinking is my first level. Second would be a specific topic, like, Plate Tectonics or Interior Layers. Third would be the classroom use, like, visual aids, lessons, or tutorials. My organization in delicious was very shallow for me as I'm not going to think first about the type of essential element or instructional method. How are the rest of you feeling about that?

    Hey Patty,

The levels as far as I see are indicated by the tags you make. I have 4 public lists. Each list will house my bookmarks. When I edit a bookmark's tag, I can assign it to a specific list. I will actually edit the tag, I will use titles of my levels. For example, I named a recent tag to be in the Earth Science List as...
    platetectonics assessment

As I gather more of those types of bookmarks, I will tag them the same so all of the plate tectonics assessment sites are together. As I gather more, I would have to add a level to the tag to separate some of them out even more.

That is my understanding of the system so far. I haven't found info on making "folders," for all of my levels as I have done with My Favorites. From a personal standpoint, there is no difference from My Favorites to Diigo. From a collaborative standpoint...WOW!

Delicious was a mess for me. Subject matter drives my organization from the start.

currentevents or sciencenews as a tag could provide overlap among subjects. These would be general science news sites with several specific topics within, obviously.

Well following Jonathan's example of making sections within a list, I have done so with my earth science list. Feel free to check it out.
