I think the best way to organize sites for me is by the classroom use. My main headings will be teacher led/large groups, small groups, or individual. When I mapped this on Inspiration it became a Venn Diagram instead of a tree because some of the secondary categories were associated with more than one heading.

I thought a lot about possible ways to organize the sites and I am going with my initial idea with one addition, teacher resources. I really like the diigo list feature. It allowed me to put some of my sites into more than one list. That was great because when I did my mapping in Inspiration I ended up using a Venn Diagram.

My final classification scheme is broken down by intended viewer: individual student, small groups of students, large groups of students, and teacher resources.

Since I teach different math classes and have different needs, the best classification for me is by intended audience. It allows me to focus on who is going to use the resource. I would like to play with Diigo more and add tags so that I can further classify by class or level.

Using Diigo has been really interesting. Until this class, I was unfamiliar with social bookmarking. I really liked Delicious and wasn't sure that Diigo would add much. I was completely wrong! I LOVE the highlight and comment feature in Diigo. In the past, I have often stumbled upon sites that I found interesting. I would bookmark them, think of great uses, put them into a folder, and completely forget that I had them or what I wanted to do with them. Diigo allows me to put a note with the site so I can remember what I wanted to do with it. Also, I am thinking that perhaps the math department at my school could start a group to pool resources. While we have department meeting once a month, we rarely have time to discuss math or teaching math. This would be a great way to share information. I look forward to using Diigo more in the future.

Thanks for that Patty. I get into the habit of only using my laptop so I wasn't even thinking about being able to access the sites anywhere!

It looks like we need to comment on the classification systems of at least 3 members...so here goes...similarity:
I also have teacher resources as one of my tags/classifications.
Difference: I chose to classify based on content that I teach, whereas you classified by levels (isn't that sort of like content?). You also broke it down by type of viewer, which I found interesting.

I think when we set up our main classes, we can include teacher resources as one. Do you have ideas for any others? How about professional development? Professional organizations?

    Dawn,

Interesting idea for your most general classification categories. Are you actually going to create a group diigo page that your students will access? Or is this classification just for you so if you are lesson planning, you are able to say, "Students are working individually for a portion of class on geometric shapes," and you know exactly where to look for those types of resources?

I flip-flop too much with how I conduct activities in my classes. For example, I may be a bit apprehensive about using an online resource so I'll try it as individuals, pairs, and then small groups, maybe even throw in a whole-group attempt. As I find resources, I may not be able to make a decision that quickly on how I would use them with my students. For a classification system, I must start with the topic, then break it down by the usage. Either way, as items are tagged with spaces between the words, we may be able to have our own systems and still contribute to our group's system. You may start with an individual student tag, but also include visual aids or Geometry. Therefore, if I were looking for geometry visual aids, I could find your resources without any idea you are using them for individual activities.

    Hey Dawn,
Based on the classifications I've looked over so far, your lists are quite different. Individual student and small group are for internet based activities in class with those students? Do you students have internet regular internet access during Math? I am thinking I wish...my situation is may be I can get my science class in the computer lab for one 40 minute period in 6 days. When I look at the levels from deep to surface I see some similarities between our classifications. I also have sites coming up on more than one list. At first I thought this wouldn't be a good idea. I'm not sure why. I went ahead and included my main subject area in my lists and then added how I would use these. Our approaches to collecting websites to use in class would be very different. I rarely seek out websites I can use one on one with my students. I usually try and incorporate an activity or website (with activity) that we can investigate in class using a smartboard. I guess I could include various helpful tutorial websties on eboard for them to use at home. I think your classification system has some real practical uses. The idea of collaborating with your math dept. is great. In my opinion, your classification system was very carefully thought out.
