The Value of Multimedia in Llearning - 1 views

  •
My multimedia project title is is How to Utilize Multimedia to Create Effective Instructions. The Value of Multimedia in Learning written by Shank (2005) outlined the benefits of multimedia in learning. A well-designed multimedia presentation helps learners build more accurate and effective mental models than they do from text alone. Shephard synthesized studies showing potential benefits of well-designed multimedia, including: (Shephard, (n.d) as cited in Shank 2005, p.4). A well constructed multimedia presentation can definitively be identified as learner-centered approach to learning. Mayer (2008) also describes potential benefits of multimedia. Given that humans possess visual and auditory information processing capabilities, multimedia, he explains, takes advantage of both capabilities at once. In addition, these two channels process information quite differently, so the combination of multiple media is useful in calling on the capabilities of both systems. Meaningful connections between text and graphics potentially allow for deeper understanding and better mental models than from either alone. Shank, P. (2005). The value of multimedia in learning. Slide Share is a place where you can create an free account and upload videos, PowerPoint presentations, documents, and more. Once your information is uploaded to Slide Share you can share your account with others. This could be a convenient to share multiple formats of information during a presentation with a group. It even has a feature where you can log in as a guest, eliminating the requirement for presentation attendants to create an account. Slide Share is an example of essential learning because it provides the participant with essential material that through their presentations will lead to their working memory.

On this site, users are able to upload PowerPoint presentations, videos, Word, and PDF documents. They are also able to create webinar materials. I chose this site because of the I have had the opportunity to view videos and presentations and the past, and the quality of such material is excellent. The site is easy to use and free.
  •
Teachers who are familiar with the use of presentation software such as MS Power Point, may opt to use Slideshare to post and share their presentation. Again this a user-friendly tool, with ease of access for participants. The presentations in slideshare can also be embedded into a wiki, blog, or web page that will be used throughout the workshop.
  •
Slideshare is an online site that houses a wide variety of presentations, documents and videos. These resources can be uploaded and downloaded for easy sharing. It has a wide variety of presentations on a wide variety of subjects. Users must be cautious because there is no quality control. I had to look through a large number of presentations before I could find something that had both the content and quality for which I was searching. This site is a good resource for essential learning as it can provide new information in both auditory and visual forms to be processed into the working memory. I liked this site because of the quantity of presentations that are housed in one site. Presentations can be easily uploaded, shared, and embedded into sites.
  •

Slideshare - Slideshare is a website that allows users to upload various types of presentations: documents, presentations, and professional videos. I like this site because it attempts to keep non-professional data off , unlike sites such as You Tube that is for general use. Setting up an account is easy and the basic membership is free, which is always nice.
  •
SlideShare is a tool that allows users to upload presentations or videos they have created to be shared with others. This site also allows users to search for presentations and videos on topics of interest. Having used this tool before, I have found it easy to use and can see how it might be used to share any presentations or videos created for the workshop with staff who were unable to attend or with a much broader audience.

Poll everywhere allows for polls, simple quizzes, text based responses from an audience. It is a tool for gathering data and opinions from an audience. It is free unless you want to use more expansive tools.
  •
Diagnostic assessments drive the instruction process, when teachers/presenters know what the students know, need to know or wonder about. Poll Everywhere is an audience response system using standard web technology. It works through text, web, or Twitter, its simplicity and flexibility are earning rave reviews. I love it because responses show up immediately on the screen, allowing the instructor to create a chart, or just show responses. This is a free web-based program for up to 30 responders.
  •
This website allows a user to develop online polls that learners in a workshop/presentation can participate in. With regard to pre-training activities, quick polls can help both learners and the instructor quickly gauge what the learners know before digging into the planned activities. In addition, polls can be designed to engage learners and prepare them for some of the activities they will participate in. The product available at this website provides free access for designing quick polls. It also allows the designer to choose how participants respond to the polls. In addition to text messaging, the designer can use a web address (if mobile devices are not convenient for the setting) to allow easy access. In addition to the interactive capabilities, the polls can be seamlessly integrated into a PowerPoint presentation or website.

This online tool is a free presentation software that can allow a user to presentations that incorporate varieties of different media (i.e. text, audio, video, pictures, and so forth) as well as dynamic transitions from concept to concept. Presentations can easily be shared online and can be used to promote essential and generative learning. An advantage to this website is the fact it is simple to develop multimedia presentations that can incorporate all forms of multimedia. The interface is easy to use and intuitive.
  •
Empressr (http://www.empressr.com) is similar to Prezi in that it allows its users to create interactive presentations. Empressr goes further and not only allows for its users to upload pictures and text to their presentation they can also add video. The presentation storage and creation is free. The user can determine if the presentation will be made available to the public or they will keep it for their use only. The software offers any number of transitions to make for a more engaging presentation. The user can change the font's size and style. It is created online so the only thing the user needs is internet access.

This tool can be utilize to share informative presentations throughout the workshop. Voicethread is also going to be an option for teachers to use in their final product. The voicethread tool is free and user-friendly. Simply register for an account, upload images, complete your voice recording and publish.
  •
I am using Voice Thread to introduce the use of the graphic organizer in my workshop. This will be helpful for essential processing as they begin to select the important information that will be presented in the workshop. I posted a copy of the graphic organizer and then used a microphone to record the directions for the participant. I also typed out and posted a written example of how they might begin to fill out the graphic organizer. My workshop participants will have a paper copy of the graphic organizer, but will also have a choice to post their ideas on the voice thread. I chose this site because it is easy to use and interactive. I want to provide a differentiated learning opportunity for my digital natives by using an interactive webtool as opposed to paper pencil, which may be more appealing to my digital immigrant participants.

Windows Moviemaker - 0 views

What it does: Allows teachers to create a video from jpg files, video clips, and music. Also allows for verbal explanation to accompany video. Why this one: It is free and simple to use. Other movie makers may have many more bells and whistles. However the capabilities of this package are broad enough to satisfy most teachers' needs. The simplicity of the package is an invaluable benefit for teachers who do not have the time to spend learning new packages. Learning benefits: Both essential and generative learning can result from this multimedia option. Videos can be short (limited capacity) and provide dual coding (Mayer, 2009). Mayer, R. E. (2009). Multimedia learning (2nd ed.). Cambridge, MA: Cambridge University Press.

ToonDoo - World's fastest way to create cartoons! - 3 views

  •
What it does: Allows teachers to create a simple cartoon strip. Why this one: It is free and easy to use. It provides templates from which to choose. I see a great benefit in that teachers can quickly create a dozen of these messages in the same time it would take to create just 1 video message. Therefore, time and practicality are key benefits. As mentioned above, I have tried to maintain the need for simplicity and efficient use of time. Creating multimedia presentations are but a small fraction of the enormous number of jobs a teacher must complete. Learning benefits: I see this more for generative learning. Role playing, "what if" scenarios, and thought-provoking situations can be presented by the teachers.

ToonDoo is a website that allows students to create cartoons, books, characters, or doodles about any topic. It would be a great way for students to present information they have learned or demonstrate comprehension in a non-traditional way.

This is a tool which can be used for digital storytelling.  It is technology centered although its use is learner centered.  I incorporated the use of this tool with students from another school to retell parables with a 21st century twist in the middle school curriculum of the private Christian school at which I taught.

Animoto is the simplest of all free presentation tools! It also doesn't profess to allow the user to do everything. It allows educators to create an unlimited number of videos from still images, including a choice of background music.
  •
Description: Video slideshow creator using words and audio and graphics Why better: Slideshows can align with Mayer's(2001) principles. Downloadable and embeddable.
  •
Animoto is designed to allow its users to upload captions and images in order to create vivid videos set to music. Animoto videos are what I like to consider, "smart videos." They analyze the video, feel the music, and then customize the video, allowing users to share and publish their unique video to any webpage. Animoto videos are a creative and fun way to introduce a topic of study, introduce vocabulary, or to teach a short lesson with. Animoto is free to use after making an account, but unless a membership is purchased with Animoto, the videos that you make will be no longer than 30 seconds in length. I have used it with my presentations, after purchasing a membership, and participants of the presentation were engaged and excited about what they saw and learned. It makes learning more interesting. Animoto is better than most other video production sites as it offers its users a variety of professionally looking templates to add your photos, text, and audio to, whereas other sites are limited on their templates to basic features.

TechSmith | Jing, instant screenshots and screencasts, home - 1 views

  •
This is the site to download the free version of Jing. You can also purchase the professional version. This tool will be used to create how to videos and real time screen sharing. When learners see step by step processes in real time, it helps to reinforce the concepts and increases memory. These videos can also be shared via HTML and as downloads. Because the HTML codes are easy (cut and paste) and the loading of the presentation (click play), learners will not have to have high tech skills to access the videos and they have the oprion to save them and revisit them.

The free Jing program allows teachers to capture videos along with narration from the computer screen. In addition, users can create technology tutorials for their students, and collaborative projects among the users through video.\nWhy this one: The Jing program allows the presenter to share screen shots of documents and tutorials on the computer screen without having the actual documents in hand. For essential learning, learners can see exactly what they are supposed to do on the computer screen.\n
  •
Brief description of what it allows you to do and how it can be used for essential or generative learning: Jing is awesome!! Jing allows you to quickly take screenshots or record short videos. If one is intending participants to have something set-up before the presentation, record a Jing and save the file or easily share the file using sites like screencast.com. Jing allows audience members to be prepared for the speaker. Brief explanation of why you found this site to be better than others you found (e.g., more effective, creates better products, easier to use, and so on): Easy to use! You can also pause the recording while making it as well as mute. Screencast.com allows for quick sharing in multiple forms.

This site provides a collection of graphic organizers available in a variety of media formats including Word, HTML, and PDF. The graphic organizers provided on the site allow the presenter to organize workshop material and provide participants with a guide and note-taking handout. The process of using a graphic organizer during instruction ensures essential cognitive processing of select material and promotes generative processing with an engaging environment. The significance of this site involves the ability to manipulate the graphic organizers to tailor the layout to specific instruction.

Using Avatars - 1 views

  •
Voki is a online site that allows the learner to create their own speaking avatar. Once the avatar is created, there is an opportunity to demonstrate generative learning by creating speech for the avatar. The speech can be recorded by one's own voice or done through a text to speech tool. In my project, this will be a way for workshop participants to use generative learning to apply their learning to creating their own project. They will post an avatar on their wiki to entice learners to use it, giving purpose and features that will make the wiki useful to the participant. I chose this site for many reasons. Although it is very simple to use, it requires a high level of creativity that is engaging for learners. The product is high quality and is able to be shared via email and different online environments.

Vokis are customizable avatars for use in the classroom. A lesson does not have to consist of a large amount of time, which makes Vokis valuable for sharing mini-lessons or instructions with students. The teacher's voice (or student's) may be recorded and combined with text-based instructions be used to teach a list of vocabulary words, give instructions, or even as individualized greeting for students when they login to their computer. Vokis can be stored on a wiki to reduce the burden on a school's server and are safe to share (as long as the students does not share any specific information about themselves) because they do not show the child's face. Vokis are fun for students and encourage their oral language development in a non-threatening way.
