Gorillas, ARIS games and Augmented Reality | The Elastic Learning Network Melbourne - Facilitating 21st Century learning experiences in Melbourne Australia - 4 views

  •
I'm still excited after the first meeting with the students at Melbourne City School back in April. Since I approached the school with an idea for using Augmented Reality (AR) and Games-based Learning they have been warm and welcoming and things have progressed ever so fast.  We had some initial discussions about how Curiosity Lab (ELN) and the students could work on something and they embraced the possibilities, so we just got straight into it. Using ARIS,  the novelty of AR and opportunities to attach rich media in the AR browser, we set produce something powerful that is learner driven, which attracts media attention and captures the hearts and imagination of the public. The fact that Layar is an app designed for mobile devices make it well suited to promoting the idea of recycling mobile phones to help protect and preserve the habitat of the Western Lowlands Gorilla.

Sreedhar Pillai: How Long Before You Will Scoop.it Instead of Google It? A Year, Two, a Decade? - 1 views

  •
This is not mere Google bashing which has become very fashionable these days. It is not about the deteriorating search quality of Google everyone is starting to notice or why Microsoft's Bing is any better. It is really about how the cyber world is changing and shaping the needs and expectations which have evolved beyond mere key word search. Services like Scoop.it will meet those because Google won't. Pretty soon the question will be "have you scooped it?" rather than "Have you Googled it?"

Teachers Know Best - College Ready - 0 views

  •
"the Gates Foundation released a report surveying 3,100+ teachers (and 1,250+ students) on what they want from digital instructional tools. The report, entitled "Teachers Know Best: What Educators Want From Digital Instructional Tools," suggests that while many teachers support tech, only 55% of teachers reported available resources sufficient in helping students meet college- and career-ready standards. Educators also spoke to four instructional areas that lack usable digital tools..."

Robotic ball Sphero points to a new era in computer games: Tech Weekly podcast | Technology | theguardian.com - 0 views

  •
"This week on Tech Weekly with games editor Keith Stuart we take a look at an emerging trend in games, where smartphones and cutting-edge robotics are used to create more socially inclusive and dynamic games. Joining Keith is Guardian writer Alex Hern; Iain Simons, director of the GameCity festival; and Jonathan Smith, games producer for Lego. The panel discuss why the screen is only a part of the gaming experience - and why small-scale, cheap robotics will open up a new world for developers. Also this week: Guardian tech writer Samuel Gibbs meets Ian Bernstein, co-creator of the robotic toy ball the Sphero, to find out about the evolution of the robot in gaming."

The Cyber-utopians - Future Tense - ABC Radio National (Australian Broadcasting Corporation) - 0 views

  •
"Call someone a 'cyber-utopian' and it's likely to be taken as an insult, according to leading media theorist Ethan Zuckerman. But we'll meet some self-confessed utopians (of the digital variety) who are out of the closet and proud! While cyber-utopianism - that is, the idea that the internet is the ultimate empowering force - can get a little disconnected from reality, cyber-utopians say that's what they like about it. It's a testing ground for future opportunities they say -- a way of encouraging us to think big and make the most of the Internet and new technologies."

Three Golden Rules for Ethical Behaviour - The Conversation - 0 views

  •
At the risk of oversimplifying Kant's ideas, I'm suggesting that his categorical imperatives (unconditional requirements that are always true) be adapted as guiding principles for ethical technology use: 1. Before I do something with this technology, I ask myself, would it be alright if everyone did it? 2. Is this going to harm or dehumanise anyone, even people I don't know and will never meet? 3. Do I have the informed consent of those who will be affected? If the answer to any of these questions is "no", then it is arguably unethical to do it.

The truth about iPad: It's only good for two things | Tech Sanity Check | TechRepublic.com - 1 views

  •
"I've often said, "The iPad is only good for two things: Reading and Scrabble. Well, I've now come to some longer-term conclusions about the iPad. In truth, reading covers a lot of stuff, and the iPad is great at those reading and viewing tasks. The fact that it's instant-on and you can flip the screen around to show a colleague a web page, a chart, or a document just like you would a piece of paper gives the iPad a much more natural feel and a huge advantage over a traditional laptop for those business professionals who spend a lot of time in meetings."
  •
Interesting review. Of course we must not discount the power of just giving a student "instant on" access to web based resources, accessable and portable reading. The new dimension of using a multitouch interface offers some interesting social collaboration angles for schools.
