HOW TO: Back Up Your Social Media Presence Before the Ball Drops - 1 views

  •
As we shamble forward into the next decade, it might be prudent to take pause and take stock of the years behind us. Translation: Back up your stuff. .. We have a ton of information, photos and memories scattered around the web that we would be loathe to lose .. it still might be wise to put some of that stuff in an iron box for safe keeping."
  •
Some good advice about how to backup various online web tools.

Minds-On Toys - Kits - 6 views

  •
But perhaps the rarest thing about Digi-Comp is the combination of hands-on and minds-on fun it affords. It definitely still has things to teach*, like Boolean logic and problem-solving... and it's rewarding to build and use. That's why Minds-On Toys decided to reintroduce it in an affordable kit format, with a thorough and professional revamp of the original documentation.
  •
Just ordered myself one of these for christmas, an elastic-band powered computer that comes as a DIY kit. I can hardly wait to turn up.

BBC comedians have fun with tech talk - 4 views

  •
"Comedians Harry Enfield and Ronnie Corbett elevated the play on words to a sublime level with this skit, reminiscent the famous "Fork Handles" bit. A befuddled shopper turns to his grocer for help with his Blackberry and Apple."
  •
Just the thing to laugh at over the school break. :-)

Shuttered: are the camera's days numbered? - 0 views

  •
"Research group Gartner says many vendors have been left battling for survival as the compact digital camera market reaches maturation point in most developed countries .. Driving its downfall is the rise of the mighty smartphone with its inbuilt megapixel camera, hogging space in our pockets and snatching market share."
  •
Interesting shift from compact digital cameras to iPhones and digital SLR cameras.

The $2 Interactive Whiteboard | Action-Reaction - 8 views

  •
Teachers should be spending their precious lesson planning time designing lessons to engage kids mentally and push them to higher levels, not creating flashy Powerpoints .. Instead of thinking about how to get your students to interact with a $2,000 electronic whiteboard, think about how you can get your students to interact with each other using a $2 whiteboard.

Google goes to space, by balloon - tech - 14 December 2010 - New Scientist - 0 views

  •
"Sending small cameras to ultra-high altitudes with weather balloons is a do-it-yourself craze these days and today's activities have more of a "let's see what happens" feel than any rigorous product testing. The team, made up of Google engineers and students from the University of California, Santa Cruz, is mainly curious to see how well the phone's sensors cope with a freezing cold near-vacuum."
  •
Google Nexus now joins the list of iPHones and digital cameras that have been raised into near earth orbit by students. All that remains is to slingshot one into space with a big rubber band .. or for one to land in my back yard :-)

Berners-Lee: Facebook 'threatens' web future * The Register - 6 views

  • He also warns against Phorm-style snooping and governments that restrict free speech on the web.
  • bemoans the proliferation of net-connected apps on the Apple iPhone and other smartphones
  • "continued grassroots innovation may be the best check and balance against any one company or government that tries to undermine universality."
  • ...2 more annotations...
  • He briefly warns of cable giants who may prevent the free flow of content across the net.
  • The goal of the Web is to serve humanity. We build it now so that those who come to it later will be able to create things that we cannot ourselves imagine.
  •
Tim Berners-Lee has dubbed Facebook a threat to the universality of the world wide web. Next month marks the twentieth anniversary of the first webpage - served up by Berners-Lee at the CERN particle physics lab in Geneva - and in the December issue of Scientific American, he celebrates the uniquely democratic nature of his creation, before warning against the forces that could eventually bring it down. "Several threats to the Web's universality have arisen recently,"

the story of cool » Archive » One Laptop Per Child is cool - 1 views

  •
"OLPC is cool for a number of reasons. First, it's real innovation, the project was born before anyone was actively occupied with the themes OLPC works with. Second, it recognises that education is key to create equality around the world. And third, OLPC started out with a dream, a vision so strong that it inspired and motivated others to change their way of thinking too."
  •
Amongst the great things at the start of our millenium, this website also counts that the OLPC is cool. :-)

With Open Source Bug Bounties, 12-Year Olds Can Win Too - 0 views

  •
Commercial companies focused on open source and open source communities at large can benefit from lots of efficiencies that arise from paying the public to debug software. In the latest example of the fact that "the public" in this context means absolutely anyone, 12-year old tech whiz Alex Miller, who hails from San Jose, right in the middle of Silicon Valley, has just received a $3,000 check from Mozilla for finding a major bug in the Firefox browser.

"This was a bit of a surprise. Climbing ;everyone does it) up the roof of the Oslo Opera House on Norway the cladding is this interesting pattern but some of you will know exactly what the pattern is cos you punched and programmed those paper tapes in the very early days of computing. Me too' "
  •
Fascinating to see this image recorded on the roof of the Oslo Opera house. I have some punched cards at school (amongst a collection of really odd IT museum pieces) and it made me wonder what others might have?

QR Codes in Education: A Burgeoning Narrative | JAMES MICHIE - 7 views

  •
"Since I published a short audioBoo (click the link or scan the QR Code on the right) offering my thoughts on how QR Codes could be used for learning, there has been a significant buzz about QR Codes on Twitter and in the blogosphere. A narrative is developing as ideas, experiences and best practices are shared and discussed."
  •
QRCodes have been around for a while now, I keep wanting to try this out with my students. A fascinating idea.

Why Bare URLs are a problem « Lucacept - intercepting the Web - 4 views

  •
Despite staff constantly reinforcing the message with students that they need to construct proper bibliographies, I still see plenty of kids creating them with just the bare url and no other detail about the site they sourced their information from. I think Wikipedia have provided me with some terminology and explanations I can use with the students that will help them understand the importance of a citation using full details.
