  •
Unemployment is one of the indicators used to look at a country's macro-economy. The low unemployment in Germany leads economists to believe that the economy is recovering, meaning it is going through the "recovery" stage of the business cycle - a positive thing for a country after a global recession.

It later goes on to test the theory that (quote) "a short-term rise in unemployment can permanently damage an economy, by making it harder for those laid off to find work even when times recover". Price increase; Higher minimum wage increases unemployment - 0 views

  •
This article relates to government intervention in the form of increasing the minimum wage in some states. However, this increase was met with an increase in unemployment; which we also looked at. This unemployment is caused by a high price where supply is greater than demand, and the need for workers therefore decreases (increasing unemployment).

Foreign exchange market EURUSD: Market Outlook. Nov 1st 2012 - 1 views

  •
Unemployment is a huge issue that is coming from the eurozone economic challenges. There is a negative growth, and increasing unemployment rate. Changing the value of currency, and having difficulties stimulating economic growth are contributing to the problem. The economy is slowing down, which inevitably leads to higher unemployment.

I found this article particularly interesting because it sheds light on motivations to quit the job search - lack of experience and education, as well as the reliance on (the now changing) federal Extended Benefits program.

The Economy Is Expanding, but at a Pretty Sorry Rate - Economic Intelligence (usnews.com) - 1 views

  •
This article talks about how the GDP increase fell in the U.S but that does not mean that the economy is doing badly at all. There IS an increase and overall better numbers for most aspects in terms of the goals of macroeconomics but it is just at a slow pace. The economy fluctuates and even though the increase is "pitiful", it would just mean that the economy would most likely only increase more from here on. This is also linked to the rate of unemployment. "Let's face it, the Great American Bread machine is expanding, but at a pretty sorry rate, and not nearly enough to bring the 8.3 percent unemployment rate into 7.0 percent territory." "Yes, gross domestic product is expanding, but the unemployed are still trying to recover. This is why so few wish to call the current uncertainty-plagued growth an expansion."

Cook County might Raise Alcohol Tax, extend Tobacco Tax - 0 views

  •
This article illustrates an important aspect of taxing that we looked at in the past few weeks, and are looking at this week as well. The government increases taxes on inelastic products (such as tobacco and alcohol- which are addictive and therefore necessities). This is done as with a price increase on an inleastic product, the demand decreases by a proportionally smaller amount. This decreases any potential danger for high levels of unemployment on behalf of the company's supplying the products.
