"The Comic Creator invites students to compose their own comic strips for a variety of contexts (prewriting, pre- and postreading activities, response to literature, and so on). The organizers focus on the key elements of comic strips by allowing students to choose backgrounds, characters, and props, as well as to compose related dialogue (shown at left). This versatile tool can be used by students from kindergarten through high school, for purposes ranging from learning to write dialogue to an in-depth study of a formerly neglected genre. The tool is easy to use, made even easier with the Comic Strip Planning Sheet, a printable PDF that comic creators can use to draft and revise their work before creating and printing their final comics. After completing their comic, students have the ability to print out and illustrate their final versions for feedback and assessment."

AMEN--you do not have to be a religious person to get this. Too often, I understand this idea, but forget to share it with my students. Reading as "equipment for living"

As you already know, English (ELA) is a broad subject that encompasses a variety of topics including grammar, literature, reading, writing, vocabulary and more. Due to the nature of the discipline, there are thousands of great eBooks-but, which are the best?

"Is fiction good for us? We spend huge chunks of our lives immersed in novels, films, TV shows, and other forms of fiction. Some see this as a positive thing, arguing that made-up stories cultivate our mental and moral development. But others have argued that fiction is mentally and ethically corrosive. It's an ancient question: Does fiction build the morality of individuals and societies, or does it break it down?"

Adam Gopnik discusses the appeal of high fantasy in YA. He misses the mark, I think, in not discussing Joseph Campbell's influence in all of this, and he's condescending throughout much of the piece, but it's an interesting analysis aside from these two admittedly major issues.

just finished this with AP juniors and Honors Brit Lit Students: great project for poetry reading skills. they wrote an in class explication about their sonnet after. will memorize and recite their sonnet as well next year.  They rocked it! we are ready for the Romantics now.
