SparkNotes Least Fav Edu Website - 1 views

I assume everyone's seen this site. If you haven't it summarizes texts and information. But it's one of my least favorite sites, as an English guy. It just cheats kids out of thinking for themselves. It's not 21st century learning-students don't learn to think or read critically, they just regurgitate the information they read here, which does more harm than good.

This site is a favorite of my students, but not one of mine. I have reservations about this site because it teaches our kids that they do not have to pick up a book and read it. It encourages them in a sense to be lazy.
  •
This was becoming popular when I was in high school. Instead of reading a book - just learn about it online. Just another website that makes it easier for students not to learn. (4 of 5 least favorite websites).
  •
I dislike this website because students feel as though they can use this instead of reading the book that is required of them.  A lot of times, it even gives false or inaccurate information about the book being searched or read.  It only provides students with overviews and chapter summaries and takes away from the details that they could be reading in the actual book.

Great Website: Time for Kids - 0 views

This website provides many different resources for students and teachers.  It provides worksheets for kids about current events, quizzes, different types of graphic organizers, and more.  Also, there are mini-lessons that students can look at.  Students can also read different stories and current events and choose the reading level.  Games are also provided on this site.  There are many other resources that make this website a good one.
  •
This is a great website for kids, as well as teachers. There are great articles students can read, as well as worksheets and graphic organizers. This is also a good site teachers can use to print off excerpts or articles for students to read in class or use for instruction.

ABC's great for kindergarten independent reading skills
  •
This site has great interactivity and good response mechanisms. I could see kids using this to practice their pronunciation and reading skills. The language allows clicking on individual words, where they then sound out loud. Check out the Earth Day section - you can drag recyclables to the bins and hear the words. Great! Lots of color, sound, kids voices, and animation make this site fun

agree! I use this frequently w/ K & 1, and especially my ESL students because of the amount of vocabulary it includes!
  •
This website is a great internet tool for emerging readers and struggling readers. Students are able to listen and view tutorials to learn letter sounds, how to use letters in words and how to build sentences. This phonics tool is helpful to students that struggle with traditional instruction but are able to engage with web 2.0 tools to help further their understanding. This website also has additional tutorials and interactive games for holidays, seasons, and more advanced readers.
  •
Starfall is designed for Pre-K-2nd grade students. The goal of this site is to help kids read better by using phonics. This site is on my least favorite list because this site needs to add more interactive elements to it. Students are given the option to click on the words but I feel that having interactive games keeps the child interested

I think this website does provide a lot of information about various topics, however, it does not provide any interactive activities or games.  It all involves reading information from different webpages.  Students often get bored from reading information online and it is important that there are interactive components in educational websites.

I think the lesson plans offered on this site are excellent. Even if you just use them as the basis for your own lesson, they are really comprehensive and interesting.

I LOVE the idea of having my class read about an issue and then write letters to the editor. Reading comprehension, current events, communications, writing, constructing a logical argument, and civic engagement - all in one lesson!

The New York Times has a blog full of lesson plans related to news content in their paper. It's an incredibly rich website, full of ideas for tons of different kind of lesson plans - current events, journalism/writing, civics, international events, and many, many more. This is the kind of website you can visit as a teacher to get ideas or have your students use as part of a class project.

This website has lots of drill and practice work. The exercises are colorful and animated. This keeps the attention of students. There is a lot of variety in types of tasks, including science, math, and language. The difficulty of each exercise grows with the number of correct answers. Immediate feedback is provided on everything.

Fun brain has some great games for students to learn different things, but some of the games are not very educational.
  •
I can honestly say that I enjoy this site. Out of 10, this site will be raked at six. K-8 students are the intended audience for this site. They do have many interactive games, but the attention of the students sometimes worry about "playing" and do not focus on learning.
  •
This is also one of my least favorite websites because once again it has a lot of games that students like to play but not a lot of learning is done
  •
I like this website because it is not only for kids but also for teachers. It has math and reading games, as well as other types of games and information. I think this would be a good site for young students to use in centers in a class or for extension activities.

English Grammar - Abstract Nouns - Learn English - 0 views

  •
This site about English grammar can be used practically with any grade level who can read, I suspect. I typically used the site as a teacher resource for the discussion of abstract and concrete nouns with my high school Art students. We used the abstract nouns for project ideas; sometimes I would choose and other times I would let them vote.
  •
The concepts found in the abstract noun table are all great for classroom discussion, especially high school students. However, many ages could benefit from defining and discussing these nouns.

Navigation Frame for ArtLex - 0 views

Be sure to scroll down in the index section to see the rest of the extremely long list. I think the selection of terms below the alphabet groupings is quite erratic. I was expecting to at least see the elements of art and principles of design listed here for quick reference.
  •
This art dictionary was not helpful at all when I searched for information to use with my students. It features the infamous "scroll of death" on practically every page. The alphabetical sorting in the left hand navigation index runs together and could have been broken into smaller sections for easier reading. If not paying attention, one would miss that there is another LONG list of terms to click on below the alphabets. Font sizes are inconsistent throughout the site as well.

Although this website has a lot of good information, and is easy to read and navigate, the information is not always factual or credible. Not a good website to depend on because of this.

I love this website for kids. It is easy to navigate, pleasing to the eye, and has lots of good information for learning as well as games. It allows kids to see pictures as well as read about different animals and science topics. This is a great website to be used in the classroom.

In another one of my classes we've talked a lot about how kids don't read today-don't keep up with politics, modern events, or anything like that. This website would make it very difficult to learn anything related to politics. It's incredibly overwhleming, too many colors, and way too many links.
