Study Island - 0 views

  •
I have students that are really not in my class, but they are on my role. These students work with Study Island to help them pass their EOG's. These students are below their grade level potential, so they come to me during my class for extra help The Study Island user-friendly interface allows students to move through the program step-by-step. Each section has a pre-test and a post-test, as well as topics that cover each of the objectives within the Standard Course of Study. Topics consist of questions, answers, explanations, and lessons that address the specific skills required in order to master the Standard Course of Study.

This is one of my favorite sites to use. Study Island is built from state standards and features many options for its' users. The intended audience for this site are K-8. It functions as a testing platform for students and an assessment tool for educators. I enjoy that the activities are designed based on state standards and that educators have the option to choose what questions and/or games will be included in the students activity.

Here's a list of my "least favorite" educational websites.  Although they are my least favorite, I have to confess that I have a sort of love/hate relationship with each.  I've provided information on each site, and given a little explanation for the "love/hate".  :)

This website created by UNC's School of Education includes resources for K-12 education. There are lesson plans and professional development opportunities for teachers. I like this website because it is connected with the North Carolina Standard Course of Study. This makes it easier for EOC teachers who are looking for resources that will connect them to what they should be teaching and when.

These educational games explore important topics in history and provide interactive and fun ways for students to learn about history and other content.

This website provides games and activities where students can learn more about Science & Nature, History & Culture, People, Places, etc.  Students can also take quizzes where they answer questions and then are given feedback on what they answer.  It is organized very well where descriptions of each game or activity is provided.

Although this website has a few good resources, I think overall it is not a very helpful website for teachers.  When clicking on web resources, powerpoints, educational videos, etc.  it often simply sends you to "Google Ads" and provides no information that is helpful.  I feel as though it could be organized in a more efficient way where it provides you with direct links to educational videos and/or websites/lessons.

This site is kind of fun. I put it on my favorite list, but I think the text is way too small. Also, Flash presentations are going out soon because they aren't well supported any more. HTML5 is the ticket these days. In any case, the site is educational and interesting. I had to try several of the drills.

Classroom Activities with TI Graphing Calculators - 2 views

This website provides a teacher with a lot of information, not only for their own education regarding a graphing calculator, but also provides lessons and activities to use in the classroom. All the information for how to do something on the calculator is step-by-step and is accompanied with screen shots, which are very helpful to ensure that you are where you need to be.

This goes on my least favorite sites because of it's lack of credible information. I just feel that it can dramatically mislead a student.

I agree. This site almost always comes up #1 in the search results. It is not allowed in my classroom for any type of research purposes.

You just never know what you are going to get from this site. Could be great....could be not so great. Not my top pick for students.

I use Wikipedia for personal use only. You never know if the information is accurate. Students love Wikipedia for some reason. (It is always the first website to come up for websites).
  •
Wikipedia is a controversial source. I like the source for quick information for personal use, but I do not like it as an educational website. The main complaint for the site is that anyone can change it. That is not why I do not like it. I do not like it because I think it leaves out critical information on many topics. It is a good tool for getting quick easy questions answered but not for in depth answers to tough questions.

You can't be sure this information is accurate. (1 of 5 of least favorite websites)
  •
Although this website has a lot of good information on it at times, it can not be depended on to provide accurate information to teachers or students.  Since anyone can post information on this website, it is not reliable for students or teachers to use in the classroom for important projects or lessons.
  •
I do not let my students use wikipedia, for the main reason that anyone can edit the information. Not all of the information is correct.
