Coca-Cola and SeaWorld Parks & Entertainment expect SeaWorld's switch to PlantBottle plastic in its refillable cups to remove 35 metric tons of CO2 emissions annually, the companies say. The recyclable cup, using Coke's sustainable packaging technology, is now available in all SeaWorld and Busch Gardens parks across the US.

EU countries will face tougher recycling targets and a ban on burying recyclable waste in landfills under plans presented by the European Commission. The proposals are part of the Commission's Waste Targets Review, which includes updated recycling targets of 70 percent of household waste and 80 percent of packaging waste by 2030.

Carnival UK says tighter sulfur emissions rules for ships may mean fewer cruises in northern Europe. The cruise company's CEO David Dingle told Travel Weekly that Carnival brands P&O Cruises and Cunard Line have already planned a 28 percent cut in Baltic and Norway cruises between 2013 and 2015.

General Electric has launched an up to CAD$1 million ecomagination open challenge to help accelerate emissions-reducing technology development in Canada's oil sands. The Innovation Challenge will target two of the biggest opportunities to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the oil sands: new uses for waste heat and improved efficiency of steam generation.

But this success story has been underscored by a tense struggle over water, which Dow needs to keep production afloat, and which is in short supply in Texas amid the state's debilitating drought and its water users' increasing thirst. Kenya-based Wildlife Works Carbon employs "wildlife rangers" on about 500,000 acres in and around two national parks to protect elephants from poachers. The company sells carbon credits to raise the funds needed to pay the rangers. The cash raised also goes to compensate landowners for leaving land and resources in their natural condition, and to fund educational and community projects. It's the country's pilot project as part of its belonging to the United Nations' Reduce Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation program.

Coca-Cola began building a $100 million beverage plant in Heilongjiang, China that will seek to achieve LEED silver certification. The plant is expected to open in 2016.
