Health Risk & Benefit from Long Distance Running - 30 views
-
I love the endorphins that are released from running short distances (5k or so) and I can see how they would become addictive enough to want to run further but after reading this article, I'm not sure I will ever fulfil my ambition of running a full marathon. The reported stats on injuries for the training alone are high enough to reconsider. When I combine this with the possibility of a compromised immune system afterwards and secondary osteoarthritis from any joint injuries I might incur, I think I would rather keep running shorter distances now so I can continue to run as I age. I don't see much point in running marathons if it's going to be detrimental to my future health.

It's intriguing that despite the academic conducting the early research into the possibility of an addictive personality, Dr Allan Lang, stating that "There is no single, unique personality entity that is a necessary and sufficient condition for substance abuse" his report was "cherry picked" for information from the outset and the theory prevailed. It just goes to show how easily information and research can be misrepresented in order to satisfy the whims of another.
How sugar affects the brain - 28 views

This a great video and would make an excellent teaching aid for school students. Thanks for sharing.
As an adult, my personal experiences with food have led me to believe that sugar (in all it's forms) is addictive and not necessarily great for my health and it was interesting to see this confirmed. I'm intrigued by the way it effects our dopamine levels compared to other foods and that dopamine is the reason why the same meal, when consumed over consecutive days, becomes less appealing, even when it is prepared fresh each time.
One thing I am curios about however is whether this applies to all forms of carbohydrates or is it just the sugars mentioned? I know that extensive research has been done at Monash University into FODMAP's (short chain carbohydrates) and their effects on gut health in some people. I wonder if there is a correlation between the two.

I've been looking for a definitive answer to my question regarding which resume format would be the most appropriate for my varied work history and in a the contradictory sea of information that is google, I came across this. It describes some of the more popular styles, outlines the pros & cons of each has a clever graphic relating to 3 of the main types to consider helping to make the choice easier.

The article raises an interesting conundrum, acknowledging that "while social networking undoubtedly plays a vital role in broadening social connections and learning", it is also an incredibly accessible pathway into online abuse and bullying that can be particularly difficult to navigate for our youth. The simple biological act of being young with a developing sense of self and emotional maturity can mean that while knowing that trolling and the like exists, processing what the negative impacts of it can be, whether you are the unwilling victim or the perpetrator, may prove challenging.
I think this is a very relevant topic and I hope that we will see it discussed with higher frequency in the future, in a manner that evolves as rapidly as the technology itself.
