I think this raises a really interesting point. In this day and age, cyber bulling has become a prominent issue amongst teens and now even children. The problem with this is that back before social media or the internet existed, bullying would usually only happen at school and you could go home and not be bothered by it. Now with social media and the internet, the bullying follows you back home so that there isn't a way for you to escape it.
It almost feels like that every month or so, there's another report on the news that someone has committed suicide as a result of cyber bullying, and the victims seem to be getting younger and younger.
I like how the article brings up the parents role in all of this, it suggests what they can to make sure that their kids don't fall victim to cyberbullying. I feel parents do have a big part to play in all of this, just by keeping an eye on what their kids are doing, enforcing rules so that there are to be no electronics in the bedrooms.

I think it all depend on how we using the social media. It depend on us if we use it in correct way it will make less problems to us. As the article mention social media is not all ways bad influence. As an international student it really helps me to get touch with my friends and my family that makes me less home sick and gives me more confidence. However the bulling and all other bad stuff can not be accepted. What I like about this article is that it gives statistics and examples so I understand is easily and it is really interesting article to read.

This article really makes you appreciate the days before the internet. When I was in school we texted each other and used MSN when on the internet and toward then end of high school we used MySpace. Cyberbullying and sexting didn't seem to be an issue either. But the negatives of social media seem to out weight the positives especially when you remember the world without it. One of the growing concerns, as addressed in the article, is sleep deprivation due to internet addiction. This can lead to some serious issues not just due to sleep deprivation but what children are looking up online and the websites they are accessing.

Nowadays social media is becoming more and more popular and have become the important part of youth. It has both negative as well as positive aspects.it depends on us that how we gonna use it.As discussed above about cyber bullying and sexting and even there are much more negative aspects, like nowadays people engaged in Facebook, Instagram, twitter, etc all the time, which results in total waste of time.Even there are much more positive aspects like Students have easy, free access to resources online to help them learn.one can get connected with their family and relatives anywhere and boosted up their confidence when ever thy need,so it depend on a person how to use it in a good or bad way.

An important issue for our future generations Tom, thanks for posting.
The article raises an interesting conundrum, acknowledging that "while social networking undoubtedly plays a vital role in broadening social connections and learning", it is also an incredibly accessible pathway into online abuse and bullying that can be particularly difficult to navigate for our youth. The simple biological act of being young with a developing sense of self and emotional maturity can mean that while knowing that trolling and the like exists, processing what the negative impacts of it can be, whether you are the unwilling victim or the perpetrator, may prove challenging.
I think this is a very relevant topic and I hope that we will see it discussed with higher frequency in the future, in a manner that evolves as rapidly as the technology itself.

Exactly, As medicine have to capacity and advantage of saving people from death it also has an disadvantage of killing people if misused. Similarly Social media is also a very impoartant part of our life because in this 20th centuries modern facilities are llike basic needs. But when the question comes about teenagers and their habit of misusing. Yea, social media is affecting the life of teenagers because except using the technology in good ways they are taking themself in wrong track. As this above artilcle have mentioned like teenagers are sufering from facebook depression sexting and cyber bullying as well as the problem like social network induced obesity, internet addiction and sleep depression.

So in my view social media is important for everyone not only for teenagers but the way it is misused should be reduced. Otherwise this trend wouldnot be end and the result will be very harmful for our society and nation.

My little brother is 15 years old and uses social media all the time, I don't fear for his mental health or the possibility of bullying because I know his friends are great blokes and he's pretty resilient. However not all teenagers are like my brother and social media can be the perfect platform for faceless people to throw judgement and ridicule at fragile developing minds, when I was his age Facebook was the main platform of social media I used but now Instagram seems to be taking the front stage which I find worrying. Instagram seems to be a social media platform that emanates the idea of perfect people and perfect lives, being able to select and doctor images to upload to followers as a means of showing how wonderful your life is can lead to issues with anxiety and self confidence. I fear that the growing affect of social media on young people will give rise to a generation of narcissists that crave only the comfort of likes and comments.

With the rise in fake news attributed to social media along with a host of other issues and the fact that teenagers are developmentally vulnerable and more susceptible to undue influence, I tend to agree with the author's contention regarding the need for parental monitoring of privacy settings and profiles (assuming that parent is equipped with the necessary reasoning and critical thinking skills to effectively enforce it). I'm also of the opinion that teenagers should not be sheltered when it comes to social media and the often times harsh or seemingly offensive content. The sooner they're exposed, aware and able to manage or cope, then the better off they will be.

I would say that social media is the starting point to the development of "keyboard warriors" where users are protected behind the screen and keyboard, often known to the world just by their made-up nicknames. This anonymity allows people to attack others without revealing much of themselves, shielding them from backlash while tearing another apart. It is one of the growing concern nowadays, with younger users being more susceptible to cyberbullying and thus, suffer from nervous / mental breakdown. Sexual predators are roaming online as well, that's why parents should educate their kids to use social media wisely and learn to separate private information from public exposure.

It is everyone's responsibility to protect their own identity online and try not to harm others thru irresponsible behaviour on social media. It seems really easy and fun to write our views online and receive comments from a large audience, yet if we are not careful, we could be sued for defamation.

A life of the Internet on the youth and values and world view of the formation of a potential threat, the Internet is a boundless "net", although the rich are numerous young people on the Internet, uneven in quality, frequent contact with Western propaganda rhetoric, cultural thought, if things go on like this, our young people for life and ideology will play a subtle role in the country's political stability is clearly a potential threat.
Two, the Internet makes many young people addicted to the virtual world, divorced from reality, mainly the game.
Three, the bad information in the Internet and network crime pose a threat to the physical and mental health and safety of young people.
It mainly focuses on two points: first, some people commit crimes such as fraud or sexual assault; on the other hand, the harm of yellow trash to teenagers.

According to me, Social media has both the postive and negative effects as every coin has two sides. It depends on the people that how they use the social media. On the postive side social media has so many benefits. The world seems closer. It plays a vital role in today's life.It is like a basic need.social media is used everywhere in Schools,Colleges,Hospital,Homes etc.On the other hand Social media is effecting people's lives in a negative way.In now a days Teenagers are crazy about social media even a little child has got mobile phones, tablets and i-pads today.young generation is very curious to know about the things.crimes, frauds, suicides and blackmailing etc are committed by people with the help of social media.young generation is using social sites in negative way which effects their lives.as per my opinion parents and teachers can keep eye on the children that what they are doing.they should teach them about social media so that children, teenagers can be aware of all these things. If we use social media in right way then we can protect people and ourselves from any kind of mishappenings.

This article is nothing new. While FaceBook does enable such problems such as "FaceBook depression", sexting and cyberbullying - to pin the blame on the technology rather than the individuals who use it is a rather glaring oversight. Sexting and cyberbullying has been around ever since the rise of phones and the creation of the internet. FaceBook and social media in general is simply an easy target.

"Other problems such as social network-induced obesity, Internet addiction and sleep deprivation are issues that continue to be under intense scrutiny for the contradictory results that have been obtained in various studies."

Precisely zero explanation as to just 'how' social media supposedly forces it's users to become obese. I am left to wonder if this article is anything more than simply hyperbolic rhetoric for those who already agree with the writer's contention.

Once again, the writer seems to be interested in pinning anything they can against FaceBook, rather than acknowledging such problems exist even without FaceBook and other social media.

Cyberbullying has become fashionable to critique, but there is little reason to suggest that cyberbullying is more of a problem than in-real-world bullying.

"Sexting, the action of sending sexually revealing pictures of themselves or sexually explicit messages to another individual or group, is another common activity among the teen community in social media."

Oh no! Cue the fake moral outrage! Teenagers are horny little basturds and you're never going to 'save them' from the throes of skyrocketing testosterone in puberty.

"Adolescence is the time to spread wings and take the tentative first flight out into the world, and parents and caregivers must be part of the process."

Amazing. It appears as if we've come full circle. This is the generation which has coddled it's young - engaging in blatant fear-mongering - encouraging it's parents and the young to believe in the idea that pedos and rapists are lurking behind every corner. To then critique the young for spending too much time at home demonstrates no matter what you do, you will never be able to appease the Gods.

This article doesn't really present any new points to the cyberbullying discussion. It's essentially a run down of the same things we all already know and offers no real ideas on how to help victims or prevent further bullying. This would be a good article if you're new to the internet or a parent

You always have to be careful when it comes to social media, and though it has quite a few downsides which this article has shown us, social media has brought us easier ways and more accessible ways to look at puppy videos, so is it really that bad?
