The youngsters who prefer their virtual lives to the real world - 0 views

  •
kids are happier with their virtual lives than they are with their real lives "Children are often happier with their online lives than they are with reality, a survey has revealed. They say they can be exactly who they want to be - and as soon as something is no longer fun they can simply hit the quit button. The study also shows that, despite concerns about online safety, one in eight young people is in contact with strangers when on the web and often lies about their appearance, age and background. "

Fluency - 0 views

  •
"Fluency is a significant struggle for many. The less fluent a reader, the more he or she must focus on decoding individual words. Less fluent readers have difficulty with oral reading, which is often slow, choppy, and without natural expression. Less fluent readers must focus their time and attention on figuring out the words, leaving little room for actually understanding the text. Since reading fluency is the key to reading comprehension, less fluent readers often fall behind in educational and professional achievement. "

This topic is showing how it is harder for a person with no fluency to read, and some of the things they have to do, like decoding, to read.

The Facts on Literacy - 0 views

  •
"The National Literacy Act of 1991 defines literacy as "an individual's ability to read, write, and speak in English and compute and solve problems at levels of proficiency necessary to function on the job and in society, to achieve one's goals, and to develop one's knowledge and potential." Research indicates that 17-20% of our nation's children experience substantial difficulties in learning to read, and that more than a third of students in fourth grade (and nearly 70% in some low-income urban schools) read below the basic level. Children who are not fluent readers by fourth grade are likely to continue struggling with reading into adulthood, making early identification and intervention of reading problems essential to a child's success in both school and society."

Fluency Development - 0 views

  •
"Why is fluency important? Comprehension is the goal of reading, and fluency is required for comprehension (National Reading Panel, 2000, p.3-1). At a minimum, accurate and efficient word reading is necessary. Comprehension suffers when poor readers must focus on "getting the words off the page" and therefore areble to give much attention to the meaning of what they are reading. In contrast, fluent readers are able to focus on meaning because for them, decoding is automatic and effortless. "

Do I Know You? Fake Friends Adding Fresh Danger To Facebook - 0 views

  •
The issue of fake friends and sham accounts is becoming a problem on FAcebook. This is an extensive article about the topic that can be referenced in our project. "Though the access varies depending on each individual's privacy settings, once a spammer has become "friends" with other users, he can then tag them in photos, post messages to their walls, chat with them, send status updates to their news feeds and connect with their friends. In this fashion, the fake friends insinuate themselves into the social networks of all of the people they reach, with each new friend reinforcing the appearance that the relationships are real and making it easier to add even more friends."

8 Creative Social Awareness Campaigns : Which one of these pulled you? - 1 views

  •
We need to be aware. Information about society and its issues make us more responsible for the society. If more young people were taught about the adverse effects of global warming, they will surely keep an eye on fuel saving. If they are taught about social issues and problems, they will make an effort to do something about it, therefore improving society as a whole.

Megan Meier Foundation - Preventing Bullying and Cyber-Bullying - 0 views

  •
I heard Tina Meier speak at our school yesterday. The mother of Mega Meier, the child who killed herself after an adult pretending to be a teenager on myspace concocted a vicious cyberbullying attack on her, Tina is a powerful, poised speaker. Our local teen resource center brought her in to speak to all of the schools in our area. I highly recommend her as a great speaker. If you're having problems, give her a call. She relaates to the kids in a very non preachy way. This is an important story for students to hear about as well.

Teaching Resources, Classroom Resources & Lesson Plans - TES Resources - 0 views

Here are some great antibullying resources to share with your school. If you're looking for some fresh ideas, I think there are some good ones here. These are taking from anti bullying week which runs the week of November 14-18 in the UK. It is good to look at resources from different countries on this important topic. We need to mix things up so we don't stay stagnant in our approach.

I'm Being Followed: How Google-and 104 Other Companies-Are Tracking Me on the Web - Alexis Madrigal - Technology - The Atlantic - 0 views

  •
This incredible article from the Atlantic talks about who is tracking you and how to understand it. It is very balanced and informative and a great post to share with students as you discuss privacy. "As users, we move through our Internet experiences unaware of the churning subterranean machines powering our web pages with their cookies and pixels trackers, their tracking code and databases. We shop for wedding caterers and suddenly see ring ads appear on random web pages we're visiting. We sometimes think the ads following us around the Internet are "creepy." We sometimes feel watched. Does it matter? We don't really know what to think."

Culturosity Article: What is Cultural Awareness? - 5 views

This explains the over alll meaning of cultural awareness.
  •
This article describes what cultural awareness is and how it works. It also describes how stereotypes are part of this area of awareness.
  •
Being aware of another cultures religion and their holidays is very important. When you know these things about them it helps you get along with them better and create a relationship with them. Cultural awareness becomes central when we have to interact with people from other cultures. People see, interpret and evaluate things in a different ways. What is considered an appropriate behavior in one culture is frequently inappropriate in another one. Misunderstandings arise when I use my meanings to make sense of your reality.

Usenet: Not dead yet - 0 views

  •
As with anything that has been around as long as Usenet, and been so important to so many people, there's a great deal of folklore that's grown up around it, reflected in terms like "Big 8" and "The Great Renaming," "Netiquette" and "Never-ending September." Usenet's technological underpinnings predate its association with the Internet, resting on dial-up-based store-and-forward e-mail BBS systems and UUCP protocols and programs. Although its name makes it sound monolithic, Usenet is perhaps best described as a huge, loose collection of informal information-exchange communities that have little in common beyond their naming convention and their reliance on the Network News Transfer Protocol used to manage Usenet messages. The basic unit is the newsgroup, a threaded discussion devoted to a topic. Newsgroups are organized by topic into hierarchies. Google Groups, which provides access to Usenet, lists more than 1,000 top-level hierarchies. Many of these are named for a country or city, company or product. The Microsoft hierarchy, for example, includes 3,337 newsgroups, such as microsoft.public.mac.office.entourage, microsoft.public.scripting.vbscript and microsoft.public.outlook.calendaring.

Virgin Blue Mobile Boarding pass - 0 views

  •
Virgin Blue has launched a revolutionary, innovative new process to check in and board on domestic flights via a traveller's mobile called "Check-Mate". Gone are the days of booking the flight in advance at a desktop computer, getting to the airport, lining up to check-in and getting a printed boarding pass, with the new Check-Mate process eliminating all paper boarding passes in favour of electronic boarding passes on mobile devices including mobile phones, BlackBerry Smartphones and iPhones.
  •
Will this speed up boarding an aircraft? How? Is this considered an innovation in 2010?
