Protecting Personal Privacy Online | Common Sense Media - 2 views

This is an article to help kids learn the risks of revealing personal information online.  "Our kids live in a culture of sharing that has forever changed the concept of privacy. In a world where everyone is connected and anything created can get copied, pasted, and sent to thousands of people in a heartbeat, privacy starts to mean something different than simply guarding personal or private information. Each time your child fills out a profile without privacy controls, comments on something, posts a video, or texts a picture of themselves to friends, they potentially reveal themselves to the world. Why privacy matters Digital life is very public and often permanent. If our kids don't protect their privacy, what they do online will create digital footprints that wander and persist. Something that happens on the spur of the moment -- a funny picture, a certain post -- can resurface years later. And if kids aren't careful, their reputations can get away from them and third parties -- like marketers or potential employers -- can access what kids thought was private information. Your kids may think they just sent something to a friend -- but that friend can send it to a friend's friend, who can send it to their friends' friends, and so on. That's how secrets become headlines and how false information spreads fast and furiously. The stakes only rise when we remember that everything takes place in front of huge invisible audiences. Kids' deepest secrets can be shared with thousands of people they've never even met. New technologies make controlling privacy more challenging. With GPS-enable cell phones and location-sharing programs, kids can post their whereabouts. This information can go out to friends, strangers, and companies who will show them ads targeted to their location.  Advice for parents Explain that nothing is really private. No matter what kids think. Privacy settings aren't infallible. It's up to kids to protect themselves by thinking t

digiteen2008 - Digital Health and Wellness - 2 views

  • Digital Health and Wellness is how to stay physically fit.
  • . A few months ago a train wrecked because the driver was texting and not paying attention to how fast he was going
  • I think that alot of middle aged students would be interested in playing the nintendo wii fit.
  • ...14 more annotations...
  • Just a bit of advice for the middle and high school students, put the phone on silent and leave it alone while you are driving because you can really get hurt!
  • Also you can still teach kids to sit correctly when your on a computer
  • So they are just naturally harder to teach than anyone else
  • one of the teachers said that walking into a room without computers was like walking into a desert.
  • This video is all about minor cases of what can and will happen if you text and drive.
  • Here are some pictures of some of the worse things that can happen.
  • Middle school and high school students are more likely to text and drive because they don't know all about the dangers of texting and driving
    • d l

This is true. Texting and driveng is very dangerous.
  • A good saying for this is," I hear and I forget, I see and I remember, I do and I understand." Confucious.
    • d l

      I agree.
  • One is that they are more affected by predators
  • The second is WE have to keep them from getting too much computer consumption
  • Doctors say kids should only get 1 or 2 hours of "screen time" a day.
  • People of all ages are becoming more and more dependent on computers and mobile phones.
  • Digital health and wellness is about staying fit and healthy I think. People that spend to much on computers or use there mobile phones to much should cut down heaps.
  • A. Elementary Aged Students Don't let them stay on the computer for extended amounts of time, don't let them get on Myspace or Facebook, and when they are on the computer the parents should always be watching them no matter what. B. Middle / High School Aged Students The middle school students should be allowed a little more freedom but by the same token i don't think that they should be allowed to get on Myspace or Facebook. Those things will bring a lot more trouble than anything else. Do you think that the people on Myspace are looking for a good christian page or a page that has a lot of bad pictures on it? I don't have a Myspace or Facebook and truly I don't want one. C. Adults Adults should be allowed to do what they want. I mean really what can we do to stop them? Nothing!! We can try all that we want to but adults get more addicted and are harder to get out of that habit. Then again I think that the adults will be the best influence for the young kids and if they will try and spread the word for the kids they can do anything for them that they want to

Media group to create new digital video ecosystem | Technology | Reuters - 0 views

  • A group of media industry companies said it is planning to build a digital world where video devices and content websites play together in perfect harmony, and consumers can safely store their digital content and access it anywhere in the world.
  • The consortium of Hollywood studios, retailers, service providers, and consumer electronics and information technology companies, called the Digital Entertainment Content Ecosystem, or DECE, is working on a "uniform digital media experience"
  • customers a "rights locker" or virtual library where consumers' digital video purchases would be stored for retrieval in a manner similar to accessing an email account, Singer said.

  • "We will be developing a ... specification that services and device makers can license. They can use the logo to associate their device, knowing that when the consumer goes to buy the content, they know it will play," Singer said.
  • "They knew that when they brought (a DVD) home, they could play it on the device of their choice," Coblitz said. "We see this vision of 'buy once, play anywhere.'"

Digital Access - Digi Teen - 0 views

  • Digital Access is the topic that talks about how many people in the world have access to technology and internet.
  • Technology needs to be aware and support electronic access for everyone to create a foundation for Digital Citizenship. Digital exclusion of any kind does not enhance the growth of human beings in an electronic society. One gender should not have preferential treatment over another.
  • about how steps should be taken to let the electronic society grow, because of the many benefits that come with internet such as education. Education is better/worse in separate parts of the world, but if every single person in the world was granted access to the internet, there would be a much higher level of educated people, which will lead to a better future. There are less economically developed countries who don't have access to technology like we do. We need to work towards a future where anyone and everyone has access to the internet.

Ann from South Australia talks about her exploration of digital citizenship with her students. My favourite sentence, Ann, I really enjoyed reading this blog post. You have shared vital process material from your recent connection with NZ and also communicated student responses -also a necessary part of assessing the success and viability of online connection that leads to collaboration. My favourite sentence is your last one - "Global digital collaboration goes beyond research. We found out more through the learning experience of meeting and sharing knowledge." #flatconnections #GlobalCitizen New blog on my first global collaboration. http://t.co/8uJleK5Iar

Digital literacy and the classroom « Rhondda's Reflections - wandering around... - 1 views

  • We don’t leave our students alone and expect that they will figure out the disciplines of science, maths, English, etc. We guide them through each of these disciplines, educating them on the principles that work and help them gain knowledge and learning as they negotiate their way through the many ideas and directions made known to them.
  • Why is it, then, that schools expect students to work out effective digital strategies on their own
  • We need to help our students develop the skills and processes to negoitate their way through safely and effectively using the option that are available today and for the future developments.
  •
I love Rhondda's reflections on digital citizenship. She makes very profound, reasonable arguments as a teacher in the trenches and she has my vote 100% on what she's saying!!
