EBSCOhost: A&M RECORDS, INC. V. NAPSTER INC. - 0 views

This is very important. Much of the industry as a whole was against this file sharing system. There were actually more plaintiffs than solely A&M.

In essence this software was allowing a place for studio recorded music to be distributed for free over the internet for download.
    • Jazz Hedrick

The music companies won the case because Napster had no permission by the companies to allow uncharged distribution of their music.

This article is reiterating the vast amount of issues that were associated with the free distribution of music that Napster had no rights to.
    • Jazz Hedrick

Under Copyright Law, ALL music passed through Napster should have had adequate permissions for distribution and the case extended from the original claims to the Ninth Circuit filing an injunction against Napster.

Pursuant to the ruling in the case, Napster became piled with injunctions against them for their copyright infringing activities.

Billboard Makes YouTube Part of Hot 100 Formula - NYTimes.com - 0 views

  • when it was released in May as a free download. But this month its popularity exploded on YouTube, as thousands of fans uploaded videos of themselves dancing — some might say simply flailing — along to the song.

Just because they are dancing doesn't mean they like the song. They may have just seen other videos doing the same thing. If this was released in May why did it take so long to make an impact?
  • streaming services like Spotify.

Are the numbers correct though? Some people don't pay for streaming music services but listen to it anyway. Doesn't this make the stats incorrect? What about the number 2 song, is it actually supposed to be number one?

Being a Digital Native Isn't Enough | Guest Blog, Scientific American Blog Network - 0 views

  • never realized how hard it would be to limit my toddler’s screen time. Despite my efforts, he has developed a proficiency with my iPhone that is, as far as I can tell, standard for his peers. He has even taken to calling it “my phone” and is flummoxed when the old solar calculator that was given to him as a plaything does not do what it is “supposed” to do (i.e., play music, play games, make calls, etc.). Whether it is through a phone, a tablet, a laptop, or a television, kids can do so many things with technology–and it is intuitive and easy to navigate. One of our friend’s children even tried swiping at a magazine page, and was frustrated when it did not turn electronically.

eCO, Electronic Copyright Information - U.S. Copyright Office - - 5 views

This is the U.S. Copyright Office's web portal to pre-register, register and submit for copyright. I have used this for musical works and lyrical work for songwriters and artists. Easy to use navigation and explanation of terms. A great one stop shop to begin the process of copyrighting your material. This is a department of the Library of Congress.

Thank you for sharing this information, Jon. It's great to hear that you found the process to be easy to understand and navigate. The site and the online process definitely simplifies things.
