America's 10 Worst Prisons: Tent City | Mother Jones - 0 views

  •
The jail conditions are really poor in Maricopa county. Some would argue that the conditions are unconstitutional. Rap by fellow prisoners or staff, beaten by guards, driven insane by long-term solitary confinement, or killed off by medical neglect. I understand that criminals shouldn't live in luxury but the conditions that Joe Arpio has the prisoners is not right.

A Closer Look at Puppy Mills - 0 views

I have a very strong love for animals & its awful what they have to go through. That's why I always tell people to "adopt & not shop" because people who shop are contributing to these harsh conditions that animals endure.

Mental Health Care Access and Suicide - 2 views

  •
This article goes into the relationship between access to mental healthcare and suicide. This article is important because it is crucial to be mindful of what is at stake when we're talking about why it's important to have wide access to mental healthcare.

I personally think that mental health has such a negative stigma around it, which is part of the reason it gets negated. Taking that negative stigma away, and providing people with access to the care they need is so important.
  •
Mental health truly is something that gets disregarded a lot of the time. If anything, all the time. I agree, having access to mental healthcare is extremely important. It could be beneficial to so many people and could save numerous lives.
  •
Its freightening how unaware we are as a people to mental health conditions. A condition that America has called its epidemic is obesity, but the root cause of so many conditions is actual mental health. Mental health is more than just people who struggle with a psycological problem.
  •
It should be noted that at the end of the article it was concluded that the correlations between these to things do not nesssasirly entail causation.

Children's Rights - 1 views

  •
Even though child labor laws were passed decades ago prohibiting employment of underage youngsters, pockets of oppressive child labor exist, literally, on American soil; child farm laborers work long hours in squalid conditions and often receive half the standard minimum wage.
  •
This is a very strong topic. Mostly because children can't really speak up, and we are the ones that need to do it for them. You're childhood should be something you enjoy and not have to struggle through. And the fact that they are always taken advantage of, with low wages and horrible working conditions, makes it an extreme priority in social justice issues.

Why should an individual worry about the next time they are going to eat or shower is? There should not be as many people as there is living in conditions like this. Someone should have a secure place to live, food, and somewhere to shower.

Prisoners Face Hepatitis C Death Sentence - Impact Fund - 3 views

  •
A simple sentence in prison could be deadly. Multiple prisoners are denied treatment based on bias decisions in the justice systems. Hepatitis C is a serious condition and needs to be taken as such.
  •
It is sad that prisoners do not get the proper health care that they should be entitled to. Especially considering a good majority of people in prison were and are wrongfully committed, they now go through such terrible conditions. It really is
  •
It saddens me to see this happening in prisons. Although most prisoners are in the place they are for committing a crime, they should still not be denied treatment for something like Hepatitis. The bias decisions should be left out when it comes to a life or death situation.

How Dangerous is it Really to Live Near a Landfill? - 0 views

  •
This website dives into how living near a landfill will effect your health. There are facts that describe the health conditions you could have depending on how far away you are from a landfill. It also describes how landfills work.
  •
Living near a landfill might as well be like living in one. Although a person is not breathing in the toxins at a rapid rate it is very bad for your health to be constantly inhaling such bad air.

5 Challenges of Mental Health Care Today - 5 views

  •
Even though mental illness is a common problem it's handled very poorly. People with mental illness struggle to get help for a variety of reasons. They lack the money to pay for therapy and the support they need.
  • ...5 more comments...
  •
I agree, mental health care is very important and sadly is not always easy to get. Mental health needs more funding and more awareness. Being stable mentally is just as important as getting your yearly doctor's exam. I view mental illness's such as depression, anxiety and so on to be just as important to treat as any physical sickness or injury that requires medical attention.
  •
I also agree that mental healthcare is very poor and not getting the attention it deserves. I have someone really close to me that has mental illness and they don't get all the proper things that they need to deal with it because of money.
  •
As someone who has struggled with mental illness most of my entire life I know all too well the challenges that mental health faces in our country. It might help you to look at the Reagan administration and their decisions to close several mental health hospitals and programs in the late 80's. This had a huge impact on how mental health was dealt with in this country.
  •
Being someone that has worked for a number of years with mentally disabled patients, I have to say that there is a lot of indifference toward this medical condition. Patients are not always receiving the best treatment option, they rather receive what is convenient for the health care provider or sometimes the cheapest alternative because family does not want to pay for treatment, whether it is a therapy or medication. It is very unfortunate that these people are ignored just because they have an ilness.
  •
I work with a variety of patients and some do have mental disabilities. Most don't seek help because they have the lack of knowledge and don't know where to start. Also like the article states they don't have the support or don't want to spend the money. A lot of people who don't get the correct help they need then tend to become suicidal. Very sad.
  •
Mental health definitely needs funding. A lack of funding will result in higher poverty and an increased suicide rate among the disabled. Not too long ago the mentally ill were put in asylums. Being someone who has Asperger's Syndrome I have experienced shutdowns and anxiety. At my last college I was unofficially withdrawn. When I have anxiety I often cannot leave my bedroom and school has become very difficult.
  •
The main reason many do not seek professional help is not due to money, but the stigma that society places on someone with mental illness. Suffering in silence is a common way to handle the disease. Many also self medicate with alcohol and drugs. There is free help out there, just have to look for it. Catholic Family Services and Christian Church groups are there to those who ask for the help. The first step is to ask.

Animal Rights - 2 views

  •
The article talks about a book on how animals should have rights as in equal consideration. Animals have the ability to suffer as well as a human being. Why should or should not animals have rights?
  • ...2 more comments...
  •
Good points. Are you vegan or vegetarian? Most animals have the ability to feel pain. Adolf Hitler stated that prey species such as deer, elk, gazelle, antelopes, etc. are healthier and can run for longer periods of time and promoted healthy eating (though he was a hippocrate and ate meat himself). When people eat meat they get tired easier, need more water, and have less energy. Without a moral foundation one can justify almost anything. Do you think Christian doctrine is to blame? After all, God told Peter to eat meat. Maybe it was the best choice in order to make peace with the gentiles and not eating meet would have made Peter look aloof. Then again, in Genesis it states that God gave mankind plants to eat and not meat. From a convenient point of view is it practical to only buy products that are not made from animals? Even makeup has animal products in it. What about shoes, clothes, purses, etc? Also, if you have time, I would suggest researching Ralph Smart. Have a good day.
  •
I enjoyed reading this article as well. Animals have very similar traits as humans. They eat, feel, and suffer just as humans do. Why should we strict them of their rights? Just because they do not have a voice to defend themselves does not mean we should ignore the equality they deserve.
  •
I loved this! Animals have such a huge place in my heart and definitely deserve all the rights as us humans do. I hate hearing stories or seeing videos posted on Facebook of animals being neglected.. I don't understand how some people can do such a thing to an animal who cannot even defend themselves. They just want to be loved and nurtured.
  •
The article made some great points. Animals do suffer. They feel pain and fear. Because of this, they definitely should be given rights. Like the article stated, I grew up eating meat, but have made the transition into vegetarianism thanks to my wife who is a vegan. All it took was for me to be educated on where our meat is coming from and the conditions of the animals being slaughtered. If people could read these types of articles and watch documentaries like "Earthlings" and "Cowspiracy" I am sure they might also consider vegetarianism or veganism.
