Pipelines Explained: How Safe are America's 2.5 Million Miles of Pipelines? - 0 views

  •
This article explains the pros and cons of oil pipelines in the united states. It details costs for maintaining the 2.5 million miles of pipe and cleanup when these pipes fail. The environmental concerns of proponents, and the casualties caused by their inevitable demise through corrosion due to weather and age. This article sites information and data gathered from federal and private environmental agency's and groups outlining the risks of Americas aging and extensive energy pipelines. The scary part is how little oversight on the safety and maintenance these company's who advocate for the safety of these pipes are given. While a slew of federal and state agencies oversee some aspect of America's pipelines, the bulk of government monitoring and enforcement falls to a small agency within the Department of Transportation called the Pipeline and Hazardous Materials Safety Administration. The agency is understaffed and lacks the resources to adequately monitor the millions of miles of pipelines over which it does have authority.

Trump Administration Restricts News from Federal Scientists at USDA, EPA - 1 views

  •
Pres. Donald Trump is now restricting scientist's from sharing their research. Officials at the EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) and the USDA (U.S. Department of Agriculture) have both let their staff know that they can not discuss research done by the agency or any departmental restrictions with anyone outside of the agency. This includes talking to the news, releasing photos, posting on social media, and more.
  •
it is frightening to me that our new administration and President are trying to silence science based departments. The taxpayer funds the research that goes on, and therefore has a right to know the outcomes of what they are funding. Gagging scientists because you do not like or agree with what they are saying is childish and has no place in our government.

Should climate change be added to the civil rights agenda? - 1 views

  •
The author of this piece suggests that we should view environmental issues such as climate change as another type of civil rights movement. She parallels events like Hurricane Katrina to inequalities that African-Americans still face today.
  •
This article proposes a great question. Climate change over time has caused many more natural disasters just like Hurricane Katrina; the latest example being given Hurricane Harvey. I feel like people are slowly starting to realize the problem at large.

Dangers of GMO Foods - 2 views

  •
Proponents of GM foods say that the higher yields and improved nutritional content are necessary to ensure adequate food for the world's growing population. Opponents say any claimed benefits of GM foods are unproven, and cite the lack of safety studies and the real and potential dangers to human health and the environment as reasons to ban the products.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
After skimming the article it is safe to say these GMO foods have several negative effects on the human health and environmental health. Environmentalists fear farmers will need to spray crops with pesticides is upsetting. These GMO foods are doing more harm than good and should be banned. The fact stated about independent farmers are at risk of being sued or having to pay a fee for there crops being contaminated is disgusting and seems to be another was for the system to profit more money.
  •
I enjoyed reading the article and have been somewhat following the issue of GMO's for a couple of years. Anytime a company (Monsanto) owns a majority of a product in a free enterprise society, that is when people should be worried. Not only has Monsanto's product been proven unsafe-the company is forming a monopoly.
  •
GMO's are absolutely terrible. I'm excited to learn more about them just so that I can watch my health later on in life. I'm currently also doing my research paper on GMO's with food and nutrition. I can't wait to take my Patho class as well just so I can learn exactly how GMO's affect the human body.

The Great Barrier Reef is dying - The Washington Post - 1 views

  •
This summary discusses the killing of the Great Barrier Reef at the hand of humans. Temperature increases are introducing coral reefs to disease and death from lack of algae. The Trump administration has cut funds severely to the Environmental Protection Agency and the Natural Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration. Talk of the U.S being withdrawn from the Paris climate deal have been discussed as well.
  •
If the United States decides to pull out of the Paris climate deal, I believe that we will be to blame for the state our planet is in. Our country is driven by consumerism, causing mothers to follow in our footsteps. If we can step in the right direction toward a clean, green society, we can then start to tackle climate change.
