Mental disorders keep thousands of homeless on streets - 0 views

  •
Many homeless people who live out on the streets are victims of mental disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, and bipolar disorder. People who are mentally ill and homeless are among the hardest to treat, and government spending on homeless programs is expected to rise.

This post actually hits close to home for me, seeing as i am a psych major and i feel the same way about our homeless population. Many of them are made fun of or accused of being on drugs but what they do not realize is that many of them are acting that way because they are not on the medication that they require to function at a normal level.

This article really opens my eyes a bit about homeless people. I mainly believe that homeless people at times are just helpless and put themselves in a position that they cant return from, but this article says otherwise. It goes to show that not all of these homeless people are completely doomed, just some of them need to proper medical assistance to get them back on the right track and back into reality.

Analyzing the impact of social factors on homelessness: a Fuzzy Cognitive Map approach - 0 views

  •
Homelessness is another social issue and its caused by lack of affordable housing and accessible jobs. Once one becomes homeless it is very difficult for them to receive help as the government lacks to have adequate funding, or any funding for that matter, to assist in decreasing the numbers of homelessness. Whether that be through more jobs, less experience/starting experience available, higher minimum wage, and more affordable living situations.
  •
I really liked this article it explains a lot of factors that go into how people can become homeless and sometimes not be able to get out of it. I liked how they analyzed many of the subjects as well.

It is amazing to see the differences that people can make when donations are made, or even driving homeless people to a shelter to help them get their feet back on the ground.

This is a great resource for the homeless. My family and I put on a Christmas party for the needy every year and we always invite the people from the mission. The Mission feeds and supplies a place for them to sleep at night.
  •
It's so heartbreaking to know that people have to dig through the trash to just get some "food". I don't think anyone wants to be homeless I think that people get to a low and have a hard time picking themselves up. It's the volunteers and organizations who give a helping hand out to get these people back up.

Social Problems: The Social Problem of Homelessness - Danielle\'s Eportfolio - 0 views

  •
Homelessness is an issue for nearly a million people in America. There are so many factors that lead to homelessness that is is difficult to create an all encompassing solution to the problem. What is known is that once a family becomes homeless it is extremely difficult to get them back into rental housing. This is why programs like housing first as so important.
  •
This article provide 9 different way someone can become homeless. It is only getting more difficult for people to avoid going homeless. Growing gaps between affordable housing costs and income is the leading cause to being homeless.

This website is interesting. I also posted about foster care, which in a sense is homelessness of children due to being unsafe at home. I do a lot of volunteer work with homeless people. For some reason they have a special spot in my heart.
  •
Fighting homelessness is a great cause. Too often, assumptions are made about homeless individuals. Assumptions like: they're addicts, drunks, lazy, and more. Many homeless people suffer from mental illness. Some are veterans, and deserve more from the country they served.

The Shockingly Simple, Surprisingly Cost-Effective Way to End Homelessness | Mother Jones - 2 views

  •
Homelessness seems to be a never ending problem in the United States and there does not seem to be a solution. Some states like Utah are working towards finding a solution and helping the homeless in their state. They have a program in effect called Housing First that finds and build apartments at no cost to the homeless individual. They also work on helping them get the medical care and provisions needed to help them until they can survive on their own even if it takes some time.

Homelessness is a problem places all over the world face and continue to face as it grows almost every year. There is no single root cause to homelessness, just multiple factors that can lead to one becoming homeless. The article discusses different causes as well as people who would be affected by it.
  •
Homelessness is sadly a big issue across the world and it's a shame that it has so many causes that affect everyone affected differently. For some, it can even come down to bad luck and that is just crazy to think about.

Seattle homelessness nonprofits struggle to hire, complicating plans to expand shelters... - 0 views

  •
This article explains how nonprofit shelters are losing workers because of low pay for high stress work. The author contends that the government aid and donations to not cover enough and further complicates the homelessness crisis.
  •
A topic I feel strong about that gets overlooked all the time. It's nothing new either, the homelessness rates only grow and continue to get worse. Hopefully we can find ways to combat this problem soon.

Fact Sheet: Veteran Homelessness - 0 views

This website is a fact sheet that provides statistics of the amount of homeless veterans in the US as of 2015.

This issue really angers me. We send our troops off to war or to serve our country, so that we can ultimately turn our backs on them when they acclimate to civilian life. The ramifications of what they endure is life-altering and they need assistance adjusting to normalcy. Mental illness is very prevalent afterwards and if anyone deserves compassion, it is our troops.

Homeless encampments are becoming part of the American landscape - The Washington Post - 0 views

  •
There has been a rise in large communities of homeless people living in tents in various big cities across the United States. Many of them are living in tents instead of shelters to avoid getting COVID-19. The CDC even wants these communities to be left alone to prevent the aforementioned problem.
  •
It's sad to see so many homeless people especially when it's due to the pandemic. Its crazy how people would rather live in a tent than be in shelters. The shelters arent doing all they can to make sure these people feel safe so I see why they would rather not be in the shelters.

Issues Encountered When Trying to Assist the Homeless in Phoenix, Arizona - 0 views

  •
This article, published in 2015, details the issues Phoenix faces with the large amounts of homeless in our state. It highlights some outreach programs we have available that try their best to assist those they can, but shows that there are still so many suffering. This is an issue that touches me because for many months of the year, our weather is unbearable and these folks are forced to endure it if we don't have resources to help them transition to a better life.

The Effect of COVID-19 on Homelessness - 1 views

  •
Many people have become homeless due to the pandemic. Landlords are raising the rent in this time of crisis and people aren't able to afford to live anymore. Unemployment rates have also gone through the roof
  •
This was a good, but very sad read. I cant imagine having to be evicted out of my home due to being out of work for something like the pandemic. Something completely out of your control. I know that Arizona temporarily put a notice during the lockdown that those who couldn't pay rent were not allowed to be evicted (I was one of them) but it didn't last long enough. Like the article states, COVID19 has long term affects not short ones meaning more time to recover from its effects are needed.
