Breastfeeding in Public - 1 views

  •
Women who breastfeed their children have the right to breastfeed in public. Some states like California protect their right to not be harrassed while doing so. Other states don't have laws that protect breastfeeding mothers right to breastfeed in public. Breastfeeding is shamed on but when breast are seen everywhere else nothing is said.

As a mother who breastfed all four of my children where ever they were hungry, I would shame those who thought they could shame me. My children, my whole family in fact all ages whether they breastfed or not have a respect for a womans body especially when it comes to feeding a child. My kids do not stare or point out or act like its gross when they see a mom feeding her baby. People all around the world whether they breastfeed or not need to teach their kids to respect nature. This way in the future mothers will no longer be shamed when trying to feed their babies.
  •
Its so annoying that people feel like breast feeding a child in public is wrong. This is a natural thing, its a part of life. People just need to grow up and stop seeing it as sexual exposure. Its a beautiful bond between a mother and child.
  •
Breastfeeding is one of the most amazing things women body can do. Our society make it seen like a sexual act....Breast milk is the first healthy food for babies when they are growing up. In hospital, nurses invite patients to breastfeed their newborn because that is the best food for babies.
  •
It is one of the most important things to do for a child. I find it disturbing that some people go off on them and say that it looks gross. People have a problem with it because they think they are exposing themselves, They kind of are but they have a reason to do it which is for breast feeding. What would they do if they had a child and had to breast feed? I think they might change their mind a little bit.
  •
It really irritates me when I hear that people are so against breast feeding in public. The whole point of it is to feed the baby and give it nourishment that the baby will not get from formula. I am sure the mother does not do it with intentions to expose themselves. Sometimes what needs to be done as to be done and people must deal with it.

Craigslist Babies - 7 views

I can not believe that people really place ads on Craigslist pretty much giving away or selling their children like pets. This article shows real ads that were placed to basically get rid of their children just the same as one would sell a dresser. Not only does this actually happen it is LEGAL!

This insane and wrong! I cannot believe this actually happens. How can you give your child to a random person with out getting a professional background check. This article blows my mind.
  •
Just reading the title of this article made me cringe however, after reading the details, some of the proponents viewpoints made sense. They pointed out when adoptive parents post ads on Craigslist it is considered networking but when a mother posts her ad looking for these adoptive parents it is viewed as baby selling. My personal opinion is that it is sad; hopefully for our society, this does not become the norm.
  •
As mentioned by Jacob, ^ the points mentioned in the article do make sense; however, I believe that the issue lies within the fact that people are profiting by giving away a life and that it is a site that can be accessed by anyone with internet access, creating a major safety hazard. It is tragic to see that these things exist and it definitely ought to be addressed and stopped immediately.
  •
Placing an add for adoption on craigslist sounds extremely unsafe. I really cannot understand how it is legal. I understand making a choice of adoption but craigslist of all places?
  •
This is just insane. It's unbelievable how something like this can be legal. Kids aren't pets or an object to be selling or giving away in a website. Although, towards the end of the article it does make a valid point, what makes us think that it's right for agencies to profit and make money out of these adoptions?
  •
I didn't know this was real until I met someone that sold their child to a family in Italy. I can't imagine selling my kids. What is even more sad is that these people don't even know if their baby is really being cared for or placed in sex trafficking or the black market for some sickos.

Should men get paternity leave from work? - 2 views

  •
Do you believe men should get paternity leave from work? This site provides both sides to whether fathers should get time off of work to help raise and care for their children or not. Comment below your thoughts!

I noticed that some of the arguments against men getting paternity leave are that the women do all of the work, so the men do not deserve it. I think this is a foolish argument because it is contradicting. If the mom does all of the hard work, why not give the father paternity leave in order to help her with the baby? The father cannot do anything about the growing baby in her stomach and all of the side effects that come with it, however, he can help feed the baby, change the baby, and put the child to sleep. It is not a vacation, it is time given to spend with their newborn child and assist in one of the most difficult phases of being a parent.
  •
I fully support this debate. Men should be afforded the right to be a parent just as much as a mother is.
  •
I agree, men should be able to get time off from work so they can also spend time with their new baby!
  •
I had a conversation with a coworker recently. We didn't understand why men are not offered Paternity leave at several companies including the one I work for. I believe that men need the time to bond with their children just as much as the mother does.
  •
I would have loved it if my husband could have taken time off from work when my children were born. Things aren't as clearly defined as they used to be. There aren't mens jobs and womens jobs. My husband helped me with all of my children, as well as working a full time job. It's up to each family to decide what works for them. We have stay at home dads now and moms who work and everything in between.
  •
This is an interesting topic, that I haven't herd before. It should be up to the man. although the women are the ones who are actually pregnant...
  •
I would have loved if my husband could have had paternity leave from work when I had my children. It also depends on the circumstances in the family household. Can they afford for both to be on leave?

Maternity Leave in the United States - 6 views

  •
This article discusses how the United States is behind when it comes to providing paid maternity leave. The United States does not guarantee paid maternity leave.
  • ...15 more comments...
  •
This is a very sad topic, i think everyone should be able to get maternity leave no matter the standards because there is nothing more beautiful than seeing a mother and father so happy with their new born baby. I believe that people should have longer maternity leave.
  •
I think everyone should be able to have maternity leave because its important for the mother and father to be with their baby. I think they should also be paid while taking this time off because they still need to be able to support the child and that cant be done if they are not making money.
  •
With the evidence that researchers have uncovered within their study on new mothers; these findings can be very alarming. Especially, the diagnose of postpartum depression. This is great evidence that can support this continuous debate.
  •
Pregnancy is the most beautiful thing a mother can experience, but at the same the most painful. With maternity leave mothers and fathers can have that time to recover and get back to their daily routines.
  •
My wife gave birth to our daughter back in August, she is a school teacher and it's very heartbreaking to know that current practices in the state of Arizona have defined pregnancy as a "short term disability." True there are aspects that are disabling, but the definition itself is what removes the obligation of the state to pay for leave, instead leaving woman in the education sector to pay for supplemental health care as current healthcare for public workers does not support pregnancy. At least in our case, I'm sure there are very rare exceptions.
  •
The U.S. needs to recognize that mothers need way more time than they actually get for maternity leave! Giving birth is such a beautiful but extremely painful and tiring/draining thing that women need time to recuperate from.
  •
I believe in maternity leave in just about any work place. The mother gets it rough and the thought of not getting paid maternity leave just stinks. I also believe that husbands should get maternity leave. Like, what if the mother has a higher paid job, and it is the dad that stays home?
  •
With the USA coming in last in maternity leave rights, Rita Ruben talks about the injustice the work place creates by not giving mothers the time and money they need to welcome their newest member of their families. Some countries even offer paid paternity leave, but in the USA, FMLA only saves your job as a mother. No pay or fathers allowed.
  •
This article points out the US is the last of the fairly developed countries when it comes to advancement in women's maternity leave. The article talks about studies that have shown how a women's maternity leave can have an impact on her overall health and well-being.
  •
I think the author made a very important comment by saying, "The mother's mental and physical health can be an important route through which infants are affected by parents' employment decisions." I totally agree with this. How can we ignore our health after having a baby. I have 5 children and I was fortunate enough to not have to work. I was able to stay home and heal, and most importantly bond with my baby. I recovered well post child birth, and I was able to be the best mother I could be to my children.
  •
This is a huge social injustice towards the mothers who have just given birth. Making maternity leave as a paid family leave is wrong because the mothers have to later make up all the time they took off to care for their newborn, which can be months.
  •
I think new moms definitely get the shaft when it comes to maternity leave. Just watching people in my life have their kids, and the struggles that can come after besides adjusting to new life I think it is a complete injustice that new moms don't have the option to have more paid time, separate from their regular PTO.
  •
It's truly heartbreaking to think about the struggles that many mothers have to face. They were just introduced to motherhood and already have to worry about not being able to have the time or money that is deserved. Most of all, the time needed to recover post birth.
  •
I think that maternity leave is vitally important for a mother and her child. However, what about fathers the child is just as much theirs yet little to no maternity leave is given. Usually if they take the time off for the birth of the child it comes out of their paid time off if they would like an extended amount of time.
  •
The United States definitely falls behind compared to most modernized countries in-regards to this. The fact that studies show much higher results for emotional bonding between parents, and the retention of employees for the company they're employed for, when giving maternal/paternal leave. I understand the reason why it's difficult for many American businesses to be competitive to some European industries that can have months off at a time for this, but even a couple paid weeks may make all the difference at a minimum for both parents, to adapt, and prepare for their new schedule/lives.
  •
I feel like every women should be guaranteed paid maternity leave. The government constantly wants us to re produce to keep the world going, so they should encourage women that they'll be fine with money and won't have to worry about missing work.
  •
Maternity leave should be a MUST. Pregnancy is tough and the delivery is life changing. Mother's go through all different kinds of changes. It is unfair for a mother to have to go through these changes all while worrying about having to go to work and missing and wondering how her child might be doing.

Daddy Track: The Case for Paternity Leave - The Atlantic - 2 views

  •
This article discusses the benefits of paid paternity leave. Fathers are more likely to be more involved in child rearing if they take parental leave to bond.
  • ...1 more comment...
  •
In my opinion, paternity leave isn't something that should be issued. They can bond with the child when they get home from their job. Meanwhile, the mother just stays home and takes care of the baby since she'll have to rest and recover those few weeks post giving birth anyways.
  •
I was in agreement until they started throwing in, it makes you a better father and gender equality. I have four kids, no paternity leave, and I bathe them, help with homework, and change diapers. Paternity leave helps progress women? Far reach.
  •
Pros and cons to fathers getting maternity leave depending on the family and if its paid too of course. My opinion is if you have other small children who need to be attended to after just giving birth, need assistants due to some complications after giving birth or if a father wants to share 6 wks at home with his new baby then why not give them maternity leave? Then you have independent women who don't need dad at home getting in the way or adding to her list of chores all while caring for a new baby. If my husband was on maternity leave I would have a "honey-do list" for him, diaper changing tasks and cooking meals.

Justice for baby Brianna - 3 views

  •
This was very upsetting. The video briefly descibes Brianna's death and her killers. Following is an article that says Brianna's killers will not serve their full sentence due to good behavior. Her mother who was one of her killers will be released after serving only 13 of her 27 year sentence. Where is our justice for our innocent lives?
  •
I have a hard time reading about the mistreatment of children. This was difficult to watch and read. I think that the biggest issue here though is that murderers are being released without serving a full or fair sentence simply because they know how to behave well in front of the prison guards.
  •
I too have a difficult time hearing about how mothers, especially mothers, can harm their children. I have children of my own and I don't understand how some one can do that to their child. I hate how Brianna's killers can get away with it, and yes I do think they got away with it because they aren't rooting in jail for the rest of their lives just because they played the part and acted innocent while in jail.

Basically, breastfeeding in public IS legal in the United States, though sometimes people simply don't know it and therefore might complain about it. This means you can nurse your baby anywhere that you are allowed to be with the baby. Forty-three states (as of 2009) have additionally passed a law that explicitly states that fact.

U.S. Dead Last Among Developed Countries When It Comes To Paid Maternity Leave - 0 views

  •
According to the International Labor Organizations, the United States is one of only two countries that do not guarantee paid leave for new mothers. This is surprising as we live in a country with such great freedoms, yet so many new mothers are forced to choose between earning an income and caring for their new baby. While there are many corporations who are beginning to offer this benefit (as well as paternity leave), the organizations in our country, as a whole, are not making this a priority.

Lots Of Other Countries Mandate Paid Leave. Why Not The U.S.? - 0 views

  •
Democratic presidential nominees Hillary Clinton and Sen. Bernie Sanders are both fighting for stronger paid leave laws, including paid vacation and paid maternity leave. This will be helpful in keeping women in the workforce.
  •
I'm interested in this topic too. I feel that organizations who offer this benefit will see the return from the parent when they return to work. I've seen some new mothers return to work when they are not ready, and they end up having decreased performance, or end up looking for new work a few weeks later so they can be with their new baby more. This creates more cost for the company than paid leave would have.

Why Are Black Women Three Times More Likely to Have an Abortion? - 1 views

  •
Why are Black women over 3 times more likely to obtain an abortion than White women? Even though African Americans are only 12.6% of the population, they received 30% of the 1.2 million abortions in 2008 (latest available statistics), killing 360,000 Black babies at a rate of nearly 1,000 per day.

Bishops Denounce Abortion - 2 views

  •
The U.S. Roman Catholic bishops issued a pastoral letter that would criticize abortion and end the disgrace of having an abortion under law.
  •
My mother was born to an unwed 15 year old in 1940. My mother was given away in adoption to a family member. My grandmother wanted to have my mom (she had fallen in love with a service man who was killed in German) but her mom wanted her to have an abortion. It was illegal in those days and my grandmother refused to go to the "special doctor." So she was shipped away to a home for girls like her in Chicago to have my mom. My story is different then most. I am a product of a saved baby. Without my grandmother fighting for my mom, myself, my brother, my children, we would be dead. It is harder to speak to a child that survived abortion. No one has the right to tell me that we do not have the right to live. I am so grateful that abortion was illegal. I am so grateful that my beautiful children are alive. We are blessed.
  •
Whenever this issue comes up one thing always pops into my head. My body, my choice. I am a female that was born and raised in the Catholic church and had to listen to this stuff for years. It never made sense to me why so many people try revoking this right from women. If you don't support it, fine. However, to take the option away from women who do want abortion as an option opens up even more negative doors. When women do not have a safe environment to discuss these options and the operation itself is made illegal then women who are desperate are more likely to go to back alley doctors or try to perform their own abortion. This often leads to more deaths among women whether it be from a botched, cheap operation or a horrific infection. It should also be noted that each woman is different. They might want the option of abortion for various reasons. Perhaps something is wrong with the child, and the doctors note it won't live past a couple of days, maybe the woman was raped and ended up pregnant, perhaps the fetus was dying and was also killing the mother, perhaps the woman just doesn't want children. You never know the circumstances of why a woman chooses to have an abortion, and they should never be judged for it or have that right revoked.
