Youth 2 Leaders - About Us.url - 1 views

"VISION STATEMENT: The Tavis Smiley Foundation is the premiere leadership training and development program for African American youth. WHAT WE'RE ABOUT: Youth rights. Voter Education. Homelessness. HIV/AIDS. Juvenile Justice. Hate Crimes. Media Influences. Violence in Schools. Peer Pressure. Families. Intolerance. Government Spending. Education. Politics. Leadership. If there's an issue that impacts the success of a young person, we're concerned about it. More importantly we want to provide opportunities for young people who are concerned about these issues to be active participants in solving problems as the mantle of leadership is passed from one generation to the next. We want Martin Luther King, Jr. to meet Malcolm X at 13 and Ida B. Wells to meet Harriet Tubman at age 15. TSF National Youth Advisory Council members Fred Shelton and Charles Prince. WHAT WE BELIEVE: We believe that preparation is the key to success and that opportunity and vision are essential to create visionary leaders. We also believe that every child has a talent which can be used to improve their community and our country in a real and meaningful way. Our goal is to serve as a powerful positive force in young lives to counter the negatives in media and our society as a whole and provide an infrastructure that allows youth to voice their concerns and actively engage meaningful civic participation. The future of America depends on the cultivation of the next generation and a national network of young leaders is an essential force to enlighten, encourage and empower communities and affect social change."

Connect a Million Minds - Overview - 0 views

  •
"In April 2009, Time Warner Cable announced its largest-ever charitable commitment of $100 million cash and in-kind over five years to inspire students to pursue science and technology education and careers. According to national experts, the next generation of youth in the United States is not prepared to take on the challenges of the 21st century. Eighty percent of jobs created in the next decade will require math and science skills. However, today's students show declining interest in these subjects, with eighty-four percent of middle school students saying they would rather clean their room, eat their vegetables, go to the dentist or take out the garbage than learn math or science. There's clearly an immediate need for youth to develop skills in science, technology, engineering and math. A failure to do so puts our country, our communities and our children at risk of not competing successfully in a global economy. America is at risk of losing its leadership in technology and innovation as baby boomer retirements deplete the science and technology workforce by fifty percent over the next decade. Time Warner Cable's Connect a Million Minds introduces youth to opportunities and resources that inspire them to develop the important science, technology, engineering and math skills they need to solve the economic, environmental and community challenges of the future. Technology and innovation are central to our company's ability to connect millions of people to the entertainment they want, the information they depend on and the people they care about most. As a result, Time Warner Cable's new philanthropic initiative creates a powerful link between the full strength of our company and the talents of our employees with the needs of students and, ultimately, our country."

General Information - Automotive Youth Educational Systems - 0 views

  •
"Automotive Youth Educational Systems (AYES) is a partnership among participating automotive manufacturers, participating dealerships, and select secondary automotive programs. It's designed to encourage young people to consider satisfying careers in retail automotive service, and prepare them for entry-level career positions or advanced studies in automotive technology. Through its dealership and school partners, AYES strives to enhance the public image of dealerships and dealership careers, build local partnerships between dealerships and high quality schools, and foster positive working environments in dealerships. Dealerships today are in competition for qualified employees, not only among themselves, but also among restaurants, mass marketers, other retail outlets and other professions. Dealerships need to reach out to young people and their parents to explain the challenge and rewards of pursuing a retail automotive career. AYES is helping in this effort by providing "how to" ideas and support materials on conducting dealership tours for educators and youngsters, offering "job shadowing" opportunities, and taking part in "career days" and "career fairs" at local schools."

"CAMM Worldwide is a new campaign from Connect a Million Minds (CAMM), Time Warner Cable's philanthropic commitment to connect youth to ideas, people and opportunities that will inspire them to become the problem solvers of tomorrow. Fact: The U.S. ranks 35th in math and 29th in science worldwide.* To better understand how attitudes and beliefs among young Americans contribute to our poor rankings, we traveled to three countries that rank significantly higher in math and science literacy - Finland, China and Australia - and interviewed young people, parents and teachers about science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) and related issues. We compared what we heard from these nations to responses from interviews conducted here in the U.S."

Freshman Transition Initiative - 0 views

"What is the Freshman Transition Initiative (FTI)? If you are a middle or high school principal, teacher, curriculum developer or school counselor, you share our goal of increasing school retention and the success rate of the youth in your schools. To this end, The George Washington University's Freshman Transition Initiative, housed in GW's Graduate School of Education and Human Development's School Counseling Program, has studied and identified the most noteworthy and rigorous state standards in this area to develop what it considers to be a definitive set of Course Standards for Freshman Transition Classes. As schools, districts and states consider various high school reform strategies, we expect these standards will: Provide policy makers with a vision of what types of intervention strategies are possible; Provide a curriculum roadmap for teachers; Guide administrators in upgrading district or state standards; Encourage professional curriculum developers and textbook/software publishers to update or create appropriate commercial resources for the classroom"

But their potential may go to waste if they are not given the right educational opportunities. We at WatchKnow.org want to help make these opportunities available to everyone. We believe that everyone is created equal, and we take the American Dream seriously. The videos are available without any registration or fees to teachers in the classroom and to students at home 24/7. You can dive into our innovative directory or search by subject and age level. Video titles, descriptions, age level information, and ratings are all edited for usefulness. The site invites broad participation in a new kind of wiki system, guided by teachers. We have had a tremendously positive response from educators to the website."
