How to Beat the Fear of Losing a Presentation - 13 views

  •
How many times have you prepared an updated or new dynamic math or science PowerPoint or Keynote presentation for class and it would not open in school? Also, how many times has it happened to your students when it's time to give a class presentation? Now you need to postpone their presentation to another day, disrupting even the best planning.

  •
"Every year Jane Hart (can't wait to meet her LIVE at the schoolnetsa11 conference) asks us to create our list of top 10 tools and every year it is the most difficult task that I have to do. As an educational technologist I use many tools on a daily basis as well as try out new tools to see how we can use it for teaching and learning. So choosing just 10 tools remains a challenge for me!"

Five Best Photoshop Alternatives - 19 views

  •
"Adobe Photoshop is the market leader when it comes to photo retouching, image editing, or even creating new images from scratch. However, for most people's uses, it may just be too many features to wade through, too much money to spend, or too complicated to use. Thankfully, there are plenty of powerful alternatives that also have tons of features. Here's a look at five of the best."

Why Free Software has poor usability, and how to improve it (Matthew Paul Thomas) - 0 views

  •
When I wrote the first version of this article six years ago, I called it "Why Free Software usability tends to suck". The best open source applications and operating systems are more usable now than they were then. But this is largely from slow incremental improvements, and low-level competition between projects and distributors. Major problems with the design process itself remain largely unfixed.

TiddlyWiki - a reusable non-linear personal web notebook - 0 views

  • Welcome to TiddlyWiki, a popular free MicroContent WikiWikiWeb created by JeremyRuston and a busy Community of independent developers. It's written in HTML, CSS and JavaScript to run on any modern browser without needing any ServerSide logic. It allows anyone to create personal SelfContained hypertext documents that can be posted to a WebServer, sent by email or kept on a USB thumb drive to make a WikiOnAStick. Because it doesn't need to be installed and configured it makes a great GuerillaWiki. This is revision 2.4.0 of TiddlyWiki (see recent changes), and is published under an OpenSourceLicense.

Streamline It Part I: Diigo or Bust : Metanoia - 1 views

  • Here I was using Diigo, Delicious, Google Notebook, and Zotero for my researching, bookmarking, annotating, and sharing. While all strong tools in their own right, it is pretty clear looking at this list that this is what some would call OVER DOING IT!

Making the Most of Moodle (Single) - 18 views

  •
"Learn all the components of creating your own online Moodle course! Moodle is an open source online learning management system that allows teachers to create content that can be accessed online by their students. Many educators are using online tools to enhance the learning environment in their classroom. Moodle is a great solution for getting your classes into an online learning environment that you can design and modify. "

If you are looking for a Moodle resource check out my new book!
  •
I think it's unfortunate that you are selling a resource for free/open source educational software. The beauty of Moodle is it's comprehensive online resources in addition to its accesibility for relative novice to advanced users. Making money off the volunteer work of others is not ethical and I fear that continued practices will cause such readily available resources to go commercial.
  •
I am not selling the software. I am helping K-12 teachers implement its use in the classroom. If you have done as much professional development as I have with K-12 teachers you will know that the resources available online are not adequate for your average classroom teacher. Believe me, the little bit I may make with my book will not encourage Moodle to be a commercial venture. Believe it or not there are other books written on Moodle. Do a search on Amazon.com and you'll find many more Moodle books.

Medical devices powered by the ear itself - MIT News Office - 1 views

  • Health Sciences and Technology (HST) demonstrate for the first time that this battery could power implantable electronic devices without impairing hearing.
  • The devices could monitor biological activity in the ears of people with hearing or balance impairments, or responses to therapies. Eventually, they might even deliver therapies themselves
  • “In the past, people have thought that the space where the high potential is located is inaccessible for implantable devices, because potentially it’s very dangerous if you encroach on it,” Stankovic says. “We have known for 60 years that this battery exists and that it’s really important for normal hearing, but nobody has attempted to use this battery to power useful electronics.”
  • ...5 more annotations...
  • The ear converts a mechanical force — the vibration of the eardrum — into an electrochemical signal that can be processed by the brain; the biological battery is the source of that signal’s current. Located in the part of the ear called the cochlea, the battery chamber is divided by a membrane, some of whose cells are specialized to pump ions. An imbalance of potassium and sodium ions on opposite sides of the membrane, together with the particular arrangement of the pumps, creates an electrical voltage.
  • Low-power chips, however, are precisely the area of expertise of Anantha Chandrakasan’s group at MTL
  • The frequency of the signal was thus itself an indication of the electrochemical properties of the inner ear.
  • in cochlear implants, diagnostics and implantable hearing aids. “The fact that you can generate the power for a low voltage from the cochlea itself raises the possibility of using that as a power source to drive a cochlear implant,” Megerian says. “Imagine if we were able to measure that voltage in various disease states. There would potentially be a diagnostic algorithm for aberrations in that electrical output.”
  • “I’m not ready to say that the present iteration of this technology is ready,” Megerian cautions. But he adds that, “If we could tap into the natural power source of the cochlea, it could potentially be a driver behind the amplification technology of the future.”
  •
"For the first time, researchers power an implantable electronic device using an electrical potential - a natural battery - deep in the inner ear."
  •
"All of D-Lab's classes assess the needs of people in less-privileged communities around the world, examining innovations in technology, education or communications that might address those needs. The classes then seek ways to spread word of these solutions - and in some cases, to spur the creation of organizations to help disseminate them. Specific projects have focused on improved wheelchairs and prosthetics; water and sanitation systems; and recycling waste to produce useful products, including charcoal fuel made from agricultural waste."
