MIT Students Explain How to Photograph Space for $150 - $150 Space Photo - Gizmodo - 0 views

  •
Follow-up to the BEAR-4 near space video from amateur radio enthusiasts from Edmonton, CA. These students (yes, MIT students) capture still photos from space for $150 worth of equipment. Again, it's all about letting students solve problems, using technology that is available to them, and sharing it! Talk about engaging!!!!!

A group of amateur radio enthusiats launch an HD video camera into space and track it back down to earth. I think it's incredible and a great example of what people with an interest in something can do. What could we do if we gave students goals like this to accomplish? Any thoughts about how we use this incredible example of curiosity with students? Also, note that they send it to space, share their work via YouTube, blog about it, get picked up on the Discovery channel for relatively little cost!

My StoryMaker : Carnegie Library of Pittsburgh - 3 views

  • My StoryMaker lets you control characters and objects - and creates sentences for you! Once you are done with your story, you can print it out. You cannot go back and edit a story once you have ended it but, if you click "yes" when asked to share it with others, you can print it out again by entering the magic number it gives you in the box on the right. Since lack of space forces us to delete story files older than 1 month, please save the .pdf file that prints to your own computer.

Are You Behind? - 3 views

  • Second, do you have the spaces?  If your vision does include learning online, you have to have school-supported digital spaces.  It can be anything really, but you have to have something.  And I’m not talking about individual teachers putting something together, because that doesn’t make sense for kids or from an organizational standpoint in terms of support and dedicated growth and development in concert with the vision.  I also don’t believe this should be something left to students to self-organize around-if its part of the vision, the school has to be intentional about it and provide a common landscape for all.

Great paragraph. It's not going to happen accidentally or without critical mass. It's also not just about providing the tool but about providing a vision and supporting that vision.
  •
David Jakes does a great job of laying out a vision of what should be expected for classroom interactions through a digital platform but still isn't. I love his thinking about it not being a happy website with mission/vision but a place to collaborate and inform.  The 21st century is now not tomorrow!

Pre-Algebra Vocabulary Words flash cards | Quizlet - 0 views

  •
Lots of different 'games' to play to reinforce vocabulary for all kinds of subjects. If a student/teacher just wants to create a list of study cards this can do it. If there is a station in your class for vocabulary development you can use this site in lots of different ways to have students practice vocabulary skills. I dare you to try the space race. It's tough!

remix my lit - 0 views

Not many books begin with a word of warning. Through the Clock's Workings does. This anthology of literature is not some textual tome, frozen in time and space. It is alive, evolving organically in a constant state of flux. Why? Because each story is available under a Creative Commons licence, giving you rights to share and reuse the book as you see fit. This is a world first: a remixed and remixable short fiction anthology. Buy your copy here or download the electronic version.

Amazing Space: Hubble Is Back in Business - 0 views

  •
Always looking for reading resources to share with the Striving Readers group. Here is a great online resource that has short readings that are applicable and topical. May not be user friendly for students 2 years or more behind grade level, but very applicable to the content area classrooms! Very interactive, combine pictures with text, updated constantly.

HubbleSite - NewsCenter - Hubble Opens New Eyes on the Universe (09/09/2009) - Introduc... - 0 views

I know the Hubble is not new, but the addition of the new spectroscope adds new life to this old tool (yes it's almost 20 years old). If nothing else exposing students to the different pictures that Hubble generates would be an addition. If you can use the pictures to help develop math/science connections then what a powerful tool. Take one picture a day and ask students to calculate how long it would take a human to get to that point in space traveling at 100,000 miles per hour (twice as fast a any human has ever gone) or at 1,000,000 miles per hour (way faster than we can currently travel)...

Solar System Builder | Known Universe- National Geographic Channel - 3 views

Great game for helping students understand vectors, forces, mass/acceleration relationships, solar systems. It would take a teacher willing to let students explore some (and maybe have some fun) but very easy to connect vector forces to the activity.
