Scientific American: 60-Second Science - 2 views

  •
Great weekly 60 second podcast that can be used as an incredible starter. I just listened to three podcasts that involved solar power, Mars, laughter and morality, and regressions to liars. If you can't start a conversation or class with those topics you aren't very imaginative!

Teach Science and Math - 2 views

  •
Simple article, but very nice examples of podcasting routines that would add value to classroom instruction.  Podcasting takes some time to develop but offer students opportunities to listen to materials multiple times, when they want/need to hear it again.

Unfortunately, this guy, Shawn Wheeler, just stopped his podcast and changed jobs, but there are some great resources for designing and creating your own podcast. Yet, another resource for delivering content to students that I think teachers would do well to explore.

NASA Earth Observatory: Home - 1 views

  •
NASA generated website with pictures, podcasts, blog posts of current happenings around the world. I explored one example, the recent Tsunami. Great pictures of the island and of showing the wave in the ocean! Also, great story accompanying the pics. I, also, loved the interactive global map with the geolocated pictures. Although I haven't listened to the Science for the Hungry World podcast, I subscribe to several NASA podcasts and think they are great for teaching!

Creating a Blogging Scope and Sequence | always learning - 1 views

Another nice description of how to think about blogging in the classroom and how to kick up the rigor of the process. I do like the description of different purposes from Will Richardson's book.  Always looking for ways to bring this conversation to the forefront again and again.... One of the highlights of the conversation centered around a section (on p. 32) of Will Richardson's Blogs, Wikis, Podcast and Other Powerful Web Tools for the Classroom that articulates so perfectly the different levels of blogging: Posting assignments (Not blogging) Journaling, i.e. "this is what I did today." (Not blogging) Posting links. (Not blogging) Links with descriptive annotation, i.e., "This site is about…" (Not really blogging either, but getting close depending on the depth of the description). Links with analysis that gets into the meaning of the content being linked. (A simple form of blogging). Reflective, metacognitive writing on practice without links. (Complex writing, but simple blogging, I think. Commenting would probably fall in here somewhere). Links with analysis and synthesis that articulate a deeper understanding or relationship to the content being linked and written with potential audience in mind. (Real blogging). Extended analysis and synthesis over a longer period of time that builds on previous posts, links, and comments. (Complex blogging).

Top News - Podcast trumps lecture in one college study - 0 views

  •
another example of looking at the transmission of data from teacher to student differently in the age of technology. Teachers must realize that it's not just saying the information, but allowing students opportunities to interact with the material, and in lecture situations, teachers must create opportunities for students to interact. In high school, especially, it is important that teachers understand the model that they are used to doesn't work and that they must prepare students to be able to take valuable notes that in which they make connections to.

Gajitz | Great Gadgets, Strange Science & Technology with a Twist - 3 views

  •
I just spent the day working with teachers at WCHS and we talked about adding the NASA podcast to a wiki for students to respond to during each quarter and I would add this kind of site as a useful resource that would let a student make connections between different topics/concepts they have been studying and "real life" science. I don't think you would ever know exactly what you would get here, which is why I like it. Let the students really work and explore on their own to make connections. As a teacher, let the students create a rubric with you, model an example for them and one with them, and then put the idea out there as a long term project that you touch base on on occasion. Thoughts/responses?

QR Codes - Library Success: A Best Practices Wiki - 0 views

  •
Great set of ideas/resources for using QR codes. I tihnk QR codes have great potential for creation and sharing with mobile tools.  Create a podcast/screencast, put the QR code image on your worksheet/review sheet/unit plan and let students access the information as they need from their phone/smartphone/pad...  Marry print and digital, I love it!

Great way to create podcasts with students when they interview someone for their class. They can "meet" experts online and record the conversation so they can revisit the conversation and share with others.

Great site if you are looking for significant problems to let your students (higher level) ponder. Also, the organization of the site is impressive.
