Want to let students explore with real data then welcome to FRED® (Federal Reserve Economic Data), a database of 25,176 U.S. economic time series. With FRED® you can download data in Microsoft Excel and text formats and view charts of data series. Students can explore data, create models & hypothesis, and test their models as the year progresses. If their models aren't working they can go back to their original data set and make changes based on what they've learned and see how those predictions work on new data. The best part is the variety of data that is available.  We plan to continually improve FRED® and encourage you to send feedback through our contact form.

This is a great presentation. If you want to see how the best thinkers in the world are presenting their data, then take a look at this presentation by Hans Rosling. I think this presents a challenge to math teachers to have students look at data differently than we are now. I think the data on the income and child mortality rate is incredible. Such a powerful data set and it's a linear relationship!!

Powerful topic, poverty and patterns in data relationships over time, WOW. Hans Rosling uses some incredible statistical software to present the data, but the idea can be mimicked using some PP type technologies and creating graphs. The topic of poverty is explored in a very easy understandable way; I think high school students would understand the topic and love the idea. Make sure you listen to his use of the databases, and remember he is one of the premier statisticians in the world. He is changing how he presents data, and I think we need to listen to his message on this topic.

This applet allows the user to represent data about the states using colors. The state with the highest data value is darkest; other states are shaded proportionally. Investigate any of the data provided-or enter data of your own!

Great resource for math teachers to help them represent data.

Swivel is a great data source for students and teachers alike. You can create graphs right on swivel or download the data sources and create your own. The data set shown in the link is food expenditures at home and away from home by year since 1933. I really like the food expenditures away from home since 1947, it looks like a nice exponential decay function. It would be nice to have students analyze what happened in 1947 to cause the graph to change its behavior. If you are a SS or American History teacher, I think looking at the initial aspect of this data would be interesting given that the data mirrors the great depression and as America came out of the depression the amount of money spent on food items at home decreased, until the advent of WWII!

"Visualize your numbers, explore charts, and share insights with others. " Great data source. Students can explore data sets, identify different ways of representing data, as well as identify different characterisitics of data.

Data visualizations for a changing world ​The Google Public Data Explorer makes large datasets easy to explore, visualize and communicate. As the charts and maps animate over time, the changes in the world become easier to understand. You don't have to be a data expert to navigate between different views, make your own comparisons, and share your findings.

I like Dave's blog for several reasons. He gives his students voice, he uses technology well, and he seems to find some interesting activities for his students. This post is right up my alley; he uses data that is relevent to his students, has them do some basic analysis and then in explore other data and compare/analyze the data with the original (relevant) data!

As usual the NY  Times gets it right! Great tool for creating visualizations of data. The data is from the Times articles so it's a wonderful opportunity to have students read and then create compelling visualizations of data. 

Yet, another great data analysis, display tool from Google. Implications in helping students organize/display/analyze/evaluate data is incredible. Displaying data through a map has implications in so many content areas. 

Enter your zip coade to see US census data and comparisons with neighboring zip codes. Great data site for data that is engaging to students, can be represented in multiple ways, and potential for predicting future trends.

WWT is not a model of the known universe, but rather a centralized repository for just about everything known about the universe. The idea is to democratize the science of astronomy with a single tool that can be used by students and scientists. Who knows, when everyone has access to the same data, maybe the next big discovery in astronomy will be made by an amateur? There are hundreds of terabytes of digitized sky - enough data for everyone. "

Another educational use for twitter. Create a poll, tweet your question, gather your data, explore the data. Could be a social studies tool, a psychology tool, an English tool, a math tool, or science tool. I guess if you analyze the data you receive all the questions would be a math tool.

Great data and science site. I like the nice real world connections for the data. Also, great science site. Science content using interactivity and data (gotta get math involved).

s a software tool for detecting equations and hidden mathematical relationships in your data. Its primary goal is to identify the simplest mathematical formulas which could describe the underlying mechanisms that produced the data. Eureqa is free to download and use.

NOAA's National Geophysical Data Center

Lots of data displayed in an interactive way. Great for use with an interactive white board. Easy for students to gather data, display, and report.

Aggregation of poll data. Great way of exploring data with lots of social studies/current events connections. Time rates this as one of the fifty best sites this year. Worth a few minutes of exploration.

Many Eyes is a data visualization platform designed by IBM and provided for free. Since it's IBM it should remain fairly stable and free for a long while. 

I think this is a GREAT resource with massive potential. If you teach any current issues/sociology/modern history courses then this tool is a must. Even if you teach courses like 'algebra' then this tool has potential. I spent less than five minutes looking at the query 'regression analysis' and found two valid content related applications of regression analysis that I could easily use with an algebra I, II or precal course. As an example in the first resource I came across this http://web.sny.tv/news/article.jsp?ymd=20090424&content_id=1499716&vkey=1 article from SNY.tv that mentions "each (interception) in the minus column costs you approximately six points on average over many years of regression analysis." I can see just having an algebra I course examine/explain what that means mathematically, I can see allowing some students to group, decide what data they would need to confirm that analysis and if you wanted let them analyze the data or look for the analysis that has already been done by contacting the author/NFL. If I can find that kind of information within 5 minutes then imagine what someone with imagination could do! Great resource, a must share with your core content teachers and I firmly believe this tool could quickly vault up the list of most useful very ,very quickly. I can't let this go without thinking about differentiation in the classroom, I search for a topic, let groups look at the timeline and choose their own reading (if I have a group that will be challenged by their choice, I might point them to another reading that might scaffold their understanding), but I've built in choice, built in the ability to manage the sources, opened up the ability to quickly find multiple types of sources (video, blogs, primary sources).
