A prerequisite to the use of computer mediated communication (CMC) when facilitating online instruction is access to a high level of computing power and a reliable telecommunication infrastructure. After saying that, I want to emphasize in the strongest way that when developing and delivering instruction, whether online or not, the use of technology is secondary to well-designed learning goals and objectives. What distinguishes online instruction from entertainment or recreation is the purposefulness of the designers and developers in provoking certain intelligent responses to the learning materials, context, and environment.

The Faculty Center for Teaching and Learning is your host for your Academic New Faculty Orientation. The one-and-a-half-day event is scheduled for August 17-18, 2009 in the Student Union and Classroom 1 buildings on the Orlando Campus. Each day of the orientation is filled with important activities that will provide valuable information to enable you to have a successful start to your career at UCF. At the Academic Orientation you will meet the President, Provost, Deans, Chairs, Directors, and other new faculty. These days also include breakfast and luncheon events.

After the initial shock wore off, he did what most of us would do; he went online to learn everything he could about the disease. He found lots of facts, but not the stuff he really wanted to know-like how other people with cancer were coping. As we sat helplessly on the sidelines of our friend's dilemma, it dawned on us: why not make it easy for groups of people to share information, experiences and build social communities around anything they want?
