Microsoft fixes 'big boobs' gaffe - 0 views

  •
Microsoft has swiftly fixed an embarrassing gaffe which saw a chunk of code labelled "big boobs". The hexadecimal string 0xB16B00B5 was discovered lurking in code that helps a Microsoft program work with Linux open source software. The controversial string came to light on a mailing list for developers who oversee the core, or kernel, of Linux.

Draft Protocol Spec (Google Wave Federation Protocol) - 1 views

  • Draft
  • Google Wave Federation Protocol Over XMPP
  • Anthony Baxter, Jochen Bekmann, Daniel Berlin, Soren Lassen, Sam Thorogood
  • ...22 more annotations...
  • omits details that we are unable to capture at this point
  • Each document has an id
  • Each wavelet is a container for any number of documents.
  • is composed of an XML document and a set of annotations.
  • Annotations are key-value pairs that span arbitrary ranges of the XML document
  • to represent text formatting, spelling suggestions and hyper-links
    • Graham Perrin

… and annotations (page comments, highlights, stuck and floating notes) in the Diigo sense?
  • Annotation keys and values are strings
  • A document is a sequence of items
  • Each item has a key-value map of annotations.
  • independent of the XML document structure
  • each item conceptually has its own annotation map
  • more efficient to have just one annotation map for each consecutive run of items with the same annotations
  • serialization of the document without annotations into a string is not formally an XML document
  • current annotations update, which is a map of annotation keys to pairs (old-value, new-value), where old-value and new-value are either null or an annotation value
  • After the final component, the annotations update must be empty
  • Document operation components can be divided into four classes
  • do not directly affect the document or the cursor
  • annotation boundaries (annotationBoundary) change the current annotations update
  • interaction with annotations
  • Appendix A.  Protocol Schema
  • message AnnotationBoundary { // This field is set to true if and only if both ends and changes are // empty. It is needed to ensure that the optional annotationBoundary // component field is not dropped during serialization. optional bool empty = 1; // MUST NOT have the same string twice. repeated string end = 2; // MUST NOT have two updates with the same key. MUST NOT // contain any of the strings listed in the 'end' field. repeated KeyValueUpdate change = 3; }
  • optional AnnotationBoundary annotationBoundary = 1; optional string characters = 2; optional ElementStart elementStart = 3; optional bool elementEnd = 4; optional int32 retainItemCount = 5; optional string deleteCharacters = 6; optional ElementStart deleteElementStart = 7; optional bool deleteElementEnd = 8; optional ReplaceAttributes replaceAttributes = 9; optional UpdateAttributes updateAttributes = 10;
  •
Note: this draft of the protocol/specification mentions annotation.
  •
Whether 'annotation' in the Google Wave Protocol sense is comparable to annotation in the Diigo sense, I don't know.

The Chandler Project Blog » Blog Archive » OSAF's Next Steps - 0 views

  • Being a CalDAV reference implementation is not a priority.
  • we will not be implementing CalDAV scheduling
    • Graham Perrin

CalDAV scheduling is just one aspect of CalDAV; see http://caldav.calconnect.org/standards.html
  • misperception in the press
  • ...17 more annotations...
  • the Microsoft product with the most overlap with our design objectives is probably OneNote
  • not trying to be a GTD specific tool
  • Chandler’s philosophy is different enough from GTD that it would be misleading to call Chandler a GTD tool
  • Chandler succeeds at meeting the needs of users who are tracking ‘knowledge work’
  • Chandler is not oriented around calendaring per se or around a complicated task and project landscape with many dependencies
  • we want Chandler to be more viral. We want Chandler to be easy to explain to others. We want Chandler to be found in contexts where people are already spending time. We want Chandler to be
  • even more useful as that user pulls in other people to collaborate
  • We want happy users be successful evangelists for Chandler
  • web widgets that might be deployed in different contexts — iGoogle, Facebook, on an iPhone, etc.
  • widgets should be compelling to a new user who does not use the desktop, in addition to providing features that complement the desktop. Eventually, the widgets can be building blocks
  • the user problem we are serving is an emerging market
  • there isn’t a shared, public vocabulary to describe what we’re doing
  • Our best articulation of our core value to date is: Chandler is a way to manage and collaborate on ideas using: A List View built around the idea of the Triage Workflow A Calendar View Chandler Hub Sharing Service
  • Better product messaging so that people understand what ‘user problem’ we’re trying to solve and how we’re trying to solve it.
  • more ways to get data in and out
  • web widgets (in the browser, on mobile devices and on the desktop)
  • We’re not looking to be a cheaper alternative to Outlook/Exchange. This means we’re not investing in support for free/busy-style scheduling. We’re not looking to be the ‘everyman’s’ version of Microsoft Project or Bug and Ticket-Tracking systems. This means we’re not investing in support for complex task and project management, e.g. task dependencies, tracking percent done, time estimates, robust support for assigning tasks, etc. We’re also not going to be implementing the GTD methodology.

More organizations shift to Web 2.0 while IT departments remain wary | Enterprise Web 2... - 0 views

  • At the same time, a recent InformationWeek survey of IT departments are showing considerably wariness for doing the same thing inside the firewall with employees, with over half being either skeptical or wary of the utility of Web 2.0 apps in the enterprise.  The biggest concerns: Security, little expertise with Web 2.0 products, integration issues, and unclear ROI top the list.
  •   Another probably contributor to the increasing use of customer-facing Web 2.0 applications by large organizations is simple competitive pressure.  This is something that IT departments have only recently started facing in a serious fashion with outsourcing and other budget diversions in the enterprise as business units decide that they can do better by pitting their internal IT suppliers with external ones.

How To Drive Traffic to Your Blog - The Advice of a 12 Year Old - 0 views

  • Community, communication, consideration. The three founding principals of marketing your blog to an audience, whether general, or specific. People want to get be a part of the next thing, so give them a chance. 1. Community Whether you start up your own community, or join others, via means of MyBlogLog, MySpace, LinkedIn, Xing and others, this is a guaranteed and proven way to get visitors, to get hits, impressions, and often quality traffic, because you know that these people haven’t just clicked on a random link or search engine listing, but have seen you or your website’s profile, and followed it through to your homepage/landing page. The best ways to get the profiles themselves noticed? See below… 2. Communication I don’t mean ’spam’ by this either. Get involved in genuine discussions, with other people of similar interests, start up a civilized, profitable, knowledgeable discussion, then when you’re finished, ask if they’d take a look at your blog or website. You’d be surprised how many loyal readers have come to my own blog in this way. Simply leave comments in communities, on social networks, on other blogs, etc. Still not quite your way of dealing with people? 3. Considering All the time, you have to consider the reader. Who are you writing for? The reader. Who will be navigating your blog? The reader. Who should you devote your time, energy and attention to? The reader. Consideration is important, and you can show this in many ways. Either by having a clutter-free, easy-to-follow design, or you could alternatively try getting the readers involved, by asking questions in blog posts, or website statements, and opening up comments. If people comment, strike up a conversation with them, and keep them coming back. Answer their queries and requests with solid, reliable, dependable answers, and take note of the feedback they leave by using it, and putting it into action. If someone states that your text is hard to read, change the colour to stop it clashing so much with the background, or simply make it slightly larger. There are lots of ways you can show consideration to your audience, and it shows just how loyal you are to your readers through this. If someone spots an inaccuracy in a blog post and tells you, don’t be lazy. Go change it! They’ll keep coming back, they’ll tell their friends, and in turn this C will do word-of-mouth marketing wonders. The Element of Surprise You’ve looked at both SEO, content and the ‘C’s now, but my last tip is probably what has brought me the large majority of my visitors, both loyal and one-off traffic hoppers. Differentiate yourself, do something different. Be daring, be random! Try something wild, or something completely unheard of, whether it’s outrageous, or greatly beneficial to the reader. Sometimes, even beneficial to the writer! (http://www.techzi.net/donations/) Mad things work out great sometimes, other times, they really can lower your reputation, so it’s time to take calculated risks here. My advice? Follow your instincts. Be an entrepreneur. Take that risk. Make it happen. Throw a competition (http://www.techzi.net/competition/), for all the good it will do. Stand out and be different. Darren will sure know what I mean by that…

Click upon the thumbnail to see the survey results. An intelligent tagging solution which includes the ability to create a tag, while saving those tags as favorites in a category list ... subscribable by other users via RSS ... is part of the solution.
