Draft Protocol Spec (Google Wave Federation Protocol) - 1 views

  • Draft
  • Google Wave Federation Protocol Over XMPP
  • Anthony Baxter, Jochen Bekmann, Daniel Berlin, Soren Lassen, Sam Thorogood
  • ...22 more annotations...
  • omits details that we are unable to capture at this point
  • Each document has an id
  • Each wavelet is a container for any number of documents.
  • is composed of an XML document and a set of annotations.
  • Annotations are key-value pairs that span arbitrary ranges of the XML document
  • to represent text formatting, spelling suggestions and hyper-links
    • Graham Perrin

… and annotations (page comments, highlights, stuck and floating notes) in the Diigo sense?
  • independent of the XML document structure
  • A document is a sequence of items
  • Each item has a key-value map of annotations.
  • Annotation keys and values are strings
  • each item conceptually has its own annotation map
  • more efficient to have just one annotation map for each consecutive run of items with the same annotations
  • serialization of the document without annotations into a string is not formally an XML document
  • current annotations update, which is a map of annotation keys to pairs (old-value, new-value), where old-value and new-value are either null or an annotation value
  • After the final component, the annotations update must be empty
  • Document operation components can be divided into four classes
  • do not directly affect the document or the cursor
  • annotation boundaries (annotationBoundary) change the current annotations update
  • interaction with annotations
  • Appendix A.  Protocol Schema
  • message AnnotationBoundary { // This field is set to true if and only if both ends and changes are // empty. It is needed to ensure that the optional annotationBoundary // component field is not dropped during serialization. optional bool empty = 1; // MUST NOT have the same string twice. repeated string end = 2; // MUST NOT have two updates with the same key. MUST NOT // contain any of the strings listed in the 'end' field. repeated KeyValueUpdate change = 3; }
  • optional AnnotationBoundary annotationBoundary = 1; optional string characters = 2; optional ElementStart elementStart = 3; optional bool elementEnd = 4; optional int32 retainItemCount = 5; optional string deleteCharacters = 6; optional ElementStart deleteElementStart = 7; optional bool deleteElementEnd = 8; optional ReplaceAttributes replaceAttributes = 9; optional UpdateAttributes updateAttributes = 10;
  •
Note: this draft of the protocol/specification mentions annotation.

Whether 'annotation' in the Google Wave Protocol sense is comparable to annotation in the Diigo sense, I don't know.

Are we really collaborating? :: Blog :: Headshift - 0 views

  • simply because people work together to meet objectives and reach goals, doesn't mean they are collaborating
  • efficiency
  • 'Collaboration' thrives on difference, insight and spontaneity, rather than structural harmony
    • Graham Perrin

For me, this is thought-provoking. We're in a multi-institutional and in some ways displaced environment, in which - over a period of fifteen or so years - I have grown weary of choice/proliferation of ICT solutions. Certainly, 'more' and 'diverse' can be good - if the multiples work well with each other - but too often, we find incompatibilities. By coincidence, I have used the word 'harmony' a few times this week; considering past and present approaches to collaboration, greater harmony is *exactly* what I'm aiming for…
    • Graham Perrin

'Harmony of structure' is a fairly loose expression, open to interpretation.
  • ...12 more annotations...
  • creativity and innovation
  • systemic overuse of email as the means to facilitate
    • Graham Perrin

Add to overuse: misuse, and blatant abuse. I can no longer treat e-mail as a reliable way of communicating. Whilst there is some necessity to read e-mail, I no longer feel any guilt if (amongst scores, hundreds or thousands of other messages) one or two important messages go un-read or ignored.
  • When they moved the discussion to a blog

      Key words: willing participation.
  • personal dashboards
  • reducing the amount of time spent looking for information
  • spaces where people feel confident about participating
  • worthwhile to do so
    • Graham Perrin

Too few people realise the worth of Diigo. Hence my pleas for refinement http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/annotated-urls-annotated-links-may-allow-public-anonymous-views-of-some-not-all-private-annotations-7168#3 and wider availability http://groups.diigo.com/Diigo_HQ/forum/topic/diigolet-get-annotated-link-7124 of the 'Get Annotated Link' feature - excellent for displaying Diigo features to non-users.
  • flexibility
    • Graham Perrin

Such a catchy, feel-good expression: 'more flexibility'. My problem with this: too often, 'more' is offered (or forced) upon us without proper consideration of whether - in the broadest sense - flexibility is genuinely *improved*.
  • providing workers with more
  • can result in new forms of cooperative action, more fruitful collaboration, faster decision-making, and greater productivity
    • Graham Perrin

Providing 'more' of something *might* result in what's described here, but there's a very real danger that if you add to much, people will not know where to start. Put simply, people switch off. I see it regularly
  • a clear view of the driver

Protonotes: HTML prototyping collaboration tool. - 1 views

  •
How does Protonotes distinguish itself from Diigo, and vice versa?
  •
Whereas Diigo is intended for annotation of HTML in general, Protonotes seems to be far more audience/application specific.
