Pushing, Pulling, Nudging, Lifting | Aaron Vigar - 0 views

Love this honest post from Aaron "This has certainly been true of my journey with Cohort 21. A true meeting of the minds, at the end of each session I feel like anything is possible, but when I get back to the very busy and  imperfect world in which I actually teach (this isn't a suggestion about my school, but true of everywhere) I feel it incredibly challenging to see how the big ideas I love to talk about look in the particular setting of my classroom. It's easy to get tied up trying out new technologies or aiming for a certain look to the classroom, and forget that what I really want is the simplest and most complicated goal: to help my students be happy and learn."

"Blogs and Twitter aren't the only social tools out there that can help you keep up with the latest and greatest developments in educational technology. Pinterest is rapidly becoming a favorite tool of educators all over the nation, and many have amassed some pretty great collections of edtech-related pins that teachers and students alike can use to explore new ways to learn, share, teach, and grow. While it would be nearly impossible to highlight every edtech pinboard out there, we've shared some of the boards we think stand out among the crowd here. "

How to Get a Job at Google - NYTimes.com - 0 views

"For every job, though, the No. 1 thing we look for is general cognitive ability, and it's not I.Q. It's learning ability. It's the ability to process on the fly. It's the ability to pull together disparate bits of information. We assess that using structured behavioral interviews that we validate to make sure they're predictive.""

Why the war over math is distracting and futile - The Globe and Mail - 2 views

  • The big questions on today’s blackboard is how to make math relevant for tomorrow,
  • “At the beginning of the 20th century, Latin was a required subject – it was seen as fundamental,” he says, to show how, as society changes, so does what it values. “By the end of century, Latin was gone. What will mathematics be by the end of this century?”
  • Dr. Small is showing a third option for two-number multiplication when a father raises his hand and asks: “But what’s the most efficient way?”“What’s your definition of efficient?” Dr. Small responds. “I think it’s probably the calculator.”
  • ...1 more annotation...
  • But so it goes. The one side says, “drill and kill.” The other says “drill for skill.” Basically, though, just about every mathematician and math education researcher who was interviewed for this story agrees that the perfect math class should have a mix of skills and problem solving. They just can’t agree on the amounts of each, when to add them, and what to skip.

"It's hard to learn to play the piano just by watching a video of a great pianist. Interactive learning is much more effective! oppia.org helps you make embeddable interactive educational "explorations" that let people learn by doing."

"Capturing the Moment: Webcamming, Sexting and Screen-Grabbing Teenagers have become their own paparazzi. Four out of five teens have cellphone cameras. From selfies to food porn and photo-bombing, kids are constantly "capturing the moment." They rarely seek permission from their subjects-making what were once private moments now very public. "
