But schools persist. “We know there is no education in social networking,” said Ken Sanders, the principal of a middle school in Michigan that has one of the firmest bans: students can work only on computers provided by the school, and cellphones are banned, too, since smartphones can’t be blocked on schools’ systems. “Kids should be in school to learn, so we have a system that blocks all personal access,” he said.

A common sentiment for many. Kids need to learn how to resist the urge to get distracted and use Internet services for personal reasons. This is no different for adults! We all need to learn to resist things that distract us from the current task/goal at hand. However, to simply ban this doesn't help anyone learn digital social and coping skills necessary for success beyond the school walls.

Garth, Steph and I are currently listening to Alan November speak at a technology conference at Bowling Green State University. He started with a question: "what is the most important skill we should be teaching students?". Alan then said thathat the president of HSBC, West Point University and a college professor all said that it should be EMPATHY. Interesting talk Mr. November is giving about all the ways we, as teachers, should be using technology, but he is very pessimistic about teachers changing, giving students more control and bringing social networking into the classroom. Great talking points, lots to think about. More from the road as it occurs.

I read Harry Wong's First Days of School years ago. I bought in to his ideas on teaching rules and procedures for the first days of school. However, doing that on the first day of school made me just like everyone else. That is not me, I am not everyone else. I stand at the door and greet my students. At th

A great site to easily upload an image to the internet. Just copy an image and press Ctrl and V to upload and get a unique link. You can then share the link easily on various social networks with one click of a button. http://ictmagic.wikispaces.com/Photos+%26+Images

What is snaggy? Snaggy is an image host that lets you paste images from your clipboard directly online. Any kind of image, from raw data to URL paths, can be pasted in one step. Snaggy also has a simple built-in editor you can use before you share your image. Why was it made? Sharing screenshots has always been a big hassle: you have to press print-screen, then paste it into an image editor, then save the image to your local hard drive, then browse for it and upload it. This was always an annoyance for me, so I made snaggy to simplify the process into a single step. Since then it has saved me a lot of time, so I've made it public so that everyone can benefit from it.

At a certain point, probably before this decade is out, that parallel universe will reach a point of sophistication and credibility where the degrees—or whatever new word is invented to mean “evidence of your skills and knowledge”—it grants are taken seriously by employers. The online learning environments will be good enough, and access to broadband Internet wide enough, that you won’t need to be a math prodigy like Eren Bali to learn, get a credential, and attract the attention of global employers. Companies like OpenStudy, Kno, Quizlet, Chegg, Inigral, and Degreed will provide all manner of supportive services—study groups, e-books, flash cards, course notes, college-focused social networking, and many other fabulous, as-yet-un-invented things. Bali isn’t just the model of the new ed tech entrepreneur—he’s the new global student, too, finally able to transcend the happenstance of where he was born.
